Szczepan Twardoch's the King of Warsaw
EBRD Literature Prize 2021 Don’t mention the war: Szczepan Twardoch’s The King of Warsaw It is 1937 in Warsaw – a city of not one but two populations, one Slav, one Jewish. Both go in for flamboyant Tarantino-type violence – whether it’s gun-toting gangsters, corrupt politicians with uniformed stooges, the outwardly respectable family men who attack girls in brothel bedrooms, or angry socialists and nationalists clashing in the streets. But no one does violence more elegantly than heavyweight boxer Jakub Szapiro. Tattooed with the Hebrew word MAVET, meaning death, and a sword, he doubles up as a gangster. He wears silk shirts, drives a sleek car and has all the ladies sighing. The first novel by author Szczepan Twardoch to be translated into English takes a subject that is strikingly unusual for an English-speaking readership. The history of the Jews of Poland dates back a millennium; Poland was the home of the biggest and most significant Jewish community in the world until the Nazis destroyed it and dealt a huge blow to its language, Yiddish. Although an English-language narrative of the Shoah has taken shape in the past generation, partly through movies like Schindler’s List, this book is unusual in looking back beyond the dreadful ending and painting a fictional picture of how Jews and Slavs might have lived together in a city which itself no longer exists in its pre-1939 shape. In some ways, then, this is the story of the 20th century. The King of Warsaw tells the story of that city, hurtling towards a new kind of violence so extreme it can’t yet even be imagined – a future Holocaust, foreshadowed only by hallucinatory glimpses of a giant sperm whale, Litani, hovering overhead and singing songs of death. -

Nie był ten Jordan bisku pem poznańskim, jak to przyjmowano do niedawna, był on bisku pem misyjnym. Terenem wyznaczonym mu do jego pracy kościel nej była prawdopodobnie ziemia Polan, czyli tzw. później Wielko polska, z Gnieznem jako prawdopodobną rezydencją, ośrodkiem centralnym. Ten biskup Jordan zmarł koło r. 982, a jego następcą został teraz niewątpliwy Niemiec, niejaki Unger. Dzięki bystremu spo strzeżeniu znakomitego niemieckiego badacza P. Kehr a, przyjętemu przez polskich historyków (Wł. Abrahama, St. Zakrzewskiego i na stępnych), można przyjąć, że jest ten Unger w r. 991 biskupem, ale równocześnie opatem turyngijskiego opactwa w Memleben. Wy mieniony jest on bowiem w dokumencie z r. 991 jako biskup i opat równocześnie, gdy już w roku następnym 992 jest w Memleben inny opat. Stąd wniosek słuszny, że Unger w ciągu roku 991 na 992 ustą pił z opactwa i pozostał następnie tylko biskupem i to niewątpliwie biskupem w Polsce. Imię bowiem Unger jest wcale rzadkie i trudno by było przyjąć, by mogło być równocześnie dwu biskupów Unge- rów i to żaden z nich nie zasiadający na regularnej katedrze, biskup stwie w Niemczech. Drugim wnioskiem P. Kehra, jednak sądzić wolno, niekoniecznie do przyjęcia, jest to, że stanowisko biskupie po śmierci Jordana, a przed r. -

I was in Warsaw on the day it was announced that Thomas Transtömer was awarded the Nobel Prize. We sat in the gentle October sunshine out- side the house of literature at Krakowskie Przedmieście, a group of poets from several countries. It was a little past one o’clock Thursday afternoon, and Tranströmer’s name fl ew joyfully from table to table. A reporter later asked the Polish Nobel recipient Wisława Szymborska, “What were your thoughts when you heard Tranströmer won the Nobel prize?.” “I was so happy,” she said, “that I jumped up and down on one leg.” Poland and Denmark are neighbors, but for political reasons people in Warsaw and Copenhagen have for long periods lived on different planets. Today a plane ticket to Warsaw does not cost much more than a train ticket to Jutland. Something is happening. But still it is a little scattered and ac- cidental what there is of Polish literature translated into Danish, and the Danish discourse on Poland is even now mixed with ignorance and roman- ticism. Periodically, it has tended towards a mild form of orientalism. 2. The centenary of Miłosz’s birth was celebrated in Copenhagen, too. There was a symposium at the Royal Library. Knowledgeable people from Po- land and Lithuania surveyed important aspects of his work. But, sympto- matically, not many Danish writers were present at the event. Whereas the Holy See and Ital have recognised the desirability of eliminating every reason for dissension existing between them and arriving at a final settlement of their reciprocal relations which shall be consistent with justice and with the dignity of both High Contracting Parties. Likewise to guarantee its indisputable sovereignty in international matters, it has been found necessary to create under special conditions the Vatican City, recognising the full ownership, exclusive and absolute dominion and sovereign jurisdiction of the Holy See over that City; His Holiness the Supreme Pontiff Pius XI and His-Majesty Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, have agreed to conclude a Treaty, appointing for that purpose two Plenipotentiaries, being on behalf of His Holiness, His Secretary of State, viz. His Most Reverend Eminence the Lord Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, and on behalf of His Majesty, His Excellency the Cav. Histoire de la Pologne 1 Histoire de la Pologne L'histoire de la Pologne commence véritablement au Xe siècle, sous le règne de Mieszko Ier et de la dynastie Piast. C'est sous son règne que les souverains polonais se convertissent au christianisme. La Pologne devient rapidement au Moyen Âge une puissance régionale, tout en essayant régulièrement de sortir de l'influence du Saint-Empire Romain Germanique, et repousser le Drang nach Osten. C'est ainsi qu'à partir du XIIe siècle, le royaume de Pologne doit lutter contre les Chevaliers Teutoniques qui ont colonisé la Prusse et une partie de la Poméranie. Chapter 2 Merchants, Army Suppliers, Bankers: Transnational Connections and the Rise of Warsaw’s Jewish Mercantile Elite (1770–1820) Cornelia Aust Introduction In the summer of 1783, Jacob Prager, a Jewish wholesale merchant in Amsterdam, wrote to his brother Yehiel in London: Let God, be He Blessed, guard [us] from bad times. In one moment one may lose [all] that one has acquired in 50 years. This country has lost much of its commerce by this deplorable war and we fear that we shall not in our lifetime again do such flourishing business as in the past, because demand has virtually disappeared and all seafaring monarchies receive merchandise directly from East and West.1 As Gedalia Yogev has also shown for the case of the Prager family in Amsterdam and London, the decline of the Amsterdam staple-market hurt many Jewish merchants. At least for some time—during the second half of the eighteenth century—Amsterdam merchants were kept afloat by the business in bills of exchange. In other words, the papacy is not dynastic. Th is task belongs to the College of electing Cardinals, that is, cardinals under eighty years old. Th ey gather to elect a new Pope in the ‘Conclave’ (from the Latin cum clave, i.e. locked up with a key), located in the Sistine Chapel. If the Pope cannot choose his own successor he can, nonetheless, choose those who elect. A good starting point for investigating the signifi cance of the Papacy is the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is the most recent and comprehensive account of the Roman Catholic faith. Referring to the offi ce of the Pope, the Catechism notes in paragraph 882 that ‘the Roman Pontiff , by reason of his offi ce as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.’3 Th is brief sentence contains an apt summary of what the history and offi ce of the papacy are all about. -

From Investiture to Worms: A Political Economy of European Development and the Rise of Secular Authority∗ Bruce Bueno de Mesquitay Ethan Bueno de Mesquitaz July 15, 2018 Abstract The endogenous consequences of competition between the Roman Catholic Church and secular rulers set into motion by the Investiture Controversy contribute new insights into European economic development, the rise of secular political authoriy, and the decline of the Catholic Church's political power. In particular, the resolution of the Investiture Controversy in the Concordat of Worms (1122) resulted in a significant increase in the bargaining power of secular rulers in wealthier polities relative to poorer polities. This created an institutional environment in which the Catholic Church had incentives to limit economic development while secular rulers could expand their political control by promoting development within their domain. Empirical evidence shows that the behavior of popes and of secular rulers changed in ways consistent with these incentives. Is this curial adage – with which in the past Concordats were criticized as mutual concessions of privileges between Church and State – still relevant today? Drawing on a question of a prominent member of the Italian Con- stituent Assembly, Giuseppe Dossetti (who was also a canon lawyer): are Concordats a ‘bad deal for the Church’? In order to answer, I would preliminarily clarify that Concordats are in- ternational treaties between two entities, the State and the Catholic Church, both sovereign in their own domain respectively, the temporal and the spir- itual one. They are just tools, in themselves they are neither good nor bad. They become good or bad depending on their contents. It would be interesting to retrace the historical development of Con- cordats in order to detect whether and how they have guaranteed freedom of religion in its three aspects, institutional, collective and individual. We could start with an initial arrangement (basically a concordat) still under emperor Commodus in Roman times, which allows a temporary cessation of persecution against Christians, to find that it guarantees religious freedom as a minimum existential level: the freedom to live as Christians. Or, for a formal agreement to ensure the libertas Ecclesiae, we refer to the Concordat of Worms (1122), which in the Middle Ages ended the Investiture Contro- versy, freeing the Church from the power of the Princes. -

As representações dos Vikings são primeiro desenvolvidas dentro do espectro da história e da identidade polonesa contemporâneas. Depois, através de um breve balanço historiográfico e arqueológico da situação geopolítica da Era Viking na Polônia. E finalmente, os Vikings são abordados através do imaginário geral, mais apresentado pelas coleções de museus e reconstruções históricas na Polônia. The Viking's representations are first developed under the scope of contemporary Polish history and identity. Then through a quick historiographical and archaeological overview of the geopolitical situation of Viking Age Poland. Finally, the Vikings are approached through the general imaginary, mostly presented by museum collections and historical reconstructions in Poland. Even if western scholars are becoming more acquainted with the Scandinavian presence in some Eastern European countries like Russia, Poland is still looked upon as having a poor relation in Viking Age studies.
