Identitet Filma Na Odjavnoj Špici: Ekstremni Načini Jasona Bournea “Umjetnost riječi” LX (2016) • 1–2 • Zagreb • siječanj – lipanj IZVORNI ZNANSTVENI RAD Irena P A U L U S (Umjetnička škola Franje Lučića) IDENTITET FILMA NA ODJAVNOJ ŠPICI: EKSTREMNI NAČINI JASONA BOURNEA Primljeno: 15. 4. 2015. UDK: 791.44.024.4:004 Filmska špica u neku je ruku najvažniji dio filma – ima najavnu, iden- tifikacijsku, informacijsku, marketinšku i niz drugih uloga. Međutim, špica je i najzanemareniji dio filma: ona se rijetko ozbiljno analizira i najčešće se uzima zdravo za gotovo. Ipak, neke su špice antalogijske, a veza auditivnog i vizualnog materijala u njima zapanjuje. Ovaj rad bavi se analizom glazbe i slike na odjavnim špicama trilogije o Jasonu Bour- neu. Filmovi o Jasonu Bourneu uzeti su jer su među prvima predstavili novu ubrzanu estetiku, koja nije zahvatila samo filmsku industriju, nego cjelokupan suvremeni život. Zbog „ubrzanja“ koje se odnosi i na način gledanja filmova, u serijalu o Bourneu podaci o filmu premješteni su s početka (najavna špica) na kraj (odjavna špica). No premda se radi o 77 dijelu filma na koji prosječna publika ne obraća pažnju, ipak se izradi odjavnih špica pridala posebna pozornost. Na odjavnim se špicama pojavljuje hit-pjesma Extreme Ways koju izvodi Moby, a na vizualnom je planu primijenjen princip iscrtavanja linija čije je čitanje arbitrarno. Arbitrarno je i razumijevanje stihova pjesme jer njihova se interpretacija iz filma u film mijenja. Ključne riječi: najavna špica, odjavna špica, glazba, film, Jason Bourne, Extreme Ways, Moby, linija, digitalna tehnologija U DIGITALNOM DOBU Prije stotinjak godina industrijska revolucija i galopirajući kapitalizam pro- mijenili su lice i naličje čovječanstva. Nove tehnologije dovele su do straha od strojeva (oni su većinom bili uzrokom siromaštva i nezaposlenosti), ali, s druge strane, ti isti strojevi omogućili su napredak, nove izume i olakšavanje svakodnevnog života. Danas svjedočimo kako se povijest ponavlja: digitalne tehnologije stubokom su promijenile suvremeni način života, a brzina kojom se to dogodilo može se mjeriti treptajem oka. Novosti su utjecale i na izum koji je krajem devetnaestog stoljeća okrunio industrijalizaciju – film. Nekada su I. Pa u l u s , Identitet filma na odjavnoj špici: ekstremni načini Jasona Bournea (77–100) “Umjetnost riječi” LX (2016) • 1–2 • Zagreb • siječanj – lipanj se pokrenute fotografije prihvaćale oprezno, gotovo sa strahom; i „zamrza- vanje“ pokreta bilo je teško shvatiti, a kamoli pokretanje fotografije koja je mimetički nastojala oponašati život. Danas nas muči sličan problem: stvara li se digitalnim filmotvorstvom još uvijek film u pravome smislu riječi? Buhler i Newton govore o potpuno novom i drugačijem pristupu: slika i zvuk postali su „lijeni“, „isprazni“ i „površni“. No digitalnom se postprodukcijom postiže savršena čistoća slike i zvuka; njihovo pokretanje, doduše automatsko, omogućuje novu sliku svijeta u kojemu nemoguće postaje moguće (Buhler i Newton 2013: 326–327). I to se postiže s lakoćom, uz pomoć računala. Vernallis upozorava da je novo digitalno doba dovelo do „estetike ubrzanja“ koja je osim medija zahvatila i svakodnevni život. Medija je sve više i više, mogućnosti virtualne zabave, virtualnog poslovanja i virtualne komunikacije nebrojene su, a granica između posla i svakodnevnog života sve je tanja. „Audio-vizualni zaokret“ dovodi do isprepletanja virtualnog i stvarnog svijeta koje je teško razlikovati (Vernallis 2013: 33–42, 132). Usporedo videoigre, spotovi, traileri, YouTube... oblikuju našu percepciju svakodnevnog života, pa je neminovno oblikuju i u filmu. Film, koji je nekada 78 bio „prozor u svijet“, postao je automatskom projekcijom svijeta, a filmski ekran samo je jedan od monitora na kojima se taj svijet promatra (Buhler i Newton 2013: 326, 334–335). Većina autora spominje Bordwellov pojam „intenzivirani kontinuitet“ (Bordwell 2006: 117–189) premda je kontinuitet upravo ono što se filmom u novo digitalno doba najčešće ne nudi. Kao primjere utjecaja i isprepletanja novih medija Vernallis navodi filmove Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000), Babel (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2006), Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001), Vječni sjaj nepobjedivog uma (Michael Gondry, 2004) i Bourneov ultimatum (2007, Paul Greengrass) (Vernallis 2013: 13–14, 39–41, 76–93, 94–115). Posljednji je u vezi s tim zanimljiv jer je često kritiziran. No unatoč tome uspio je privući i publiku i brojne analitičare.1 Na primjeru sekvence Bourneova ultimatuma koja se odvija na londonskoj željezničkoj postaji Waterloo, a u kojoj Jason Bourne nastoji spasiti novinara Simona Rossa od agenata CIA-e, Buhler i Newton pokazuju da se vizualni stil redatelja Paula Greengrassa temelji na namjernom zamagljivanju osjećaja 1 Ugledni kritičar Peter Bradshaw za Guardian je napisao da je Bourneov ultimatum samo „akcijski nered u kojemu dominiraju automobilski sudari i udaranje glavama“. Međutim, iz filmskih recenzija etabliranih novinara, blogera i ljudi koji prate zarade filmova vidi se kako je Bourneov ultimatum rado gledan film (Archer 2012: 10). I. Pa u l u s , Identitet filma na odjavnoj špici: ekstremni načini Jasona Bournea (77–100) “Umjetnost riječi” LX (2016) • 1–2 • Zagreb • siječanj – lipanj za prostor i vrijeme. Kao u većini suvremenih blockbustera (koji su nerijetko inspirirani upravo ovim filmom) najprije se primjećuje montaža, koja je toliko brza da je Buhler i Newton nazivaju „frenetičnom“. Zamućivanju osjećaja za prostor pridonosi i kamera iz ruke – još jedan normativ koji je postao gotovo nezaobilazan u suvremenim blockbusterima. Također, tu je fragmentarizacija (inače karakteristična za spot i za klipove na YouTubeu), odnosno činjenica da svaki kadar sadrži samo djelić informacije te da se akcija nikada ne prikazuje u cijelosti (kamera se „uključuje“ usred događaja, a „isključuje“ prije nego što događaj završi). Kamera je ili preblizu ili pre- daleko, pa gledatelj nema pravi osjećaj za to gdje se likovi stvarno nalaze i što točno rade te koliko je prostor velik ili malen. Fokusna je točka često dislocirana, a nerijetko se nalazi izvan okvira kadra. Izvan ekrana je i izvor zvukova (jer ekran je premalen za svu akciju), izvan ekrana su sinkrone točke, a neprizorna glazba jedva se razaznaje jer je zatrpana nizom drugih auditivnih i vizualnih informacija.2 Svaki će filmolog primijetiti da su Greengrassova izražajna sredstva toliko netipična da bi se mogla proglasiti amaterskima. Kadrove je nemo- guće analizirati u realnom vremenu, a „Greengrass tom tehnikom riskira nekompetenciju“. No „sve to na kraju služi da pojača snagu neuhvatljive 79 figure kadra“ (Buhler i Newton 2013: 337).3 Greengrassova je tehnika mogla proizaći iz suvremenog razmišljanja da se u filmu i u drugim medijima može upotrijebiti bilo što i bilo kako. To je, s jedne strane. odraz deinstitucionalizacije filmske režije, a, s druge, odraz popularizacije tehnike „sam svoj majstor“ koja je legitimnost dobila zahvaljujući YouTubeu (Vernallis 2013: 149–150, 311). Zbog stava da „sve prolazi“ i da su škole izgubile smisao jer se sve može naučiti na internetu, filmska je glazba prestala biti ono što je bila. Umjesto raskošnih melodija, bogatih harmonija i maštovite orkestracije gledatelj/slušatelj suočen je samo s dvama prilično bezličnim elementima: droneom i pulsom. Drone je statičan. Za jedan ili dva dugo izdržana tona koja zvuče u či- stom intervalu ne treba mnogo mudrosti. Samo se odsviraju ili se pusti da ih računalo odsvira. Čisti interval – koji se odabire jer su u njemu sadržane 2 Buhler i Newton pišu: „Zvučna staza, osim glazbe, ne nastoji razdvojene kadrove povezati, nego ih, zapravo, dublje destabilizira zaplećući sliku gomilom šumova kojima je izvor iza ekrana i naglim izmjenama filtriranih i nefiltriranih glasova“ (Buhler i Newton 2013: 336). 3 Za analizu sekvence praćenja na londonskoj željezničkoj postaji Waterloo usp. Buhler i Newton 2013: 336–337 te Archer 2012: 31–40. I. Puls je dobiven multipliciranjem istoga – što je još jedna karakteristika YouTubea. Vernallis upozorava da je internetska publika općenito poticana da stvara (režira, snima spotove, montira, komponira) jer joj je sve nado- hvat ruke, sve joj je pristupačno. Ali netko tko ne zna može stvarati jedino koristeći se ponuđenim obrascem i onda taj obrazac beskrajno ponavljati (Vernallis 2013: 130–146, 184–203). Ponavljanje postaje temeljni princip stvaranja. U svemu, pa tako i u glazbi.4 Ponavljanje izaziva očekivanje prestanka ponavljanja, a pretjerano ponav- ljanje naglašenu težnju za promjenom. No u filmovima kao što su Bourneov identitet (Doug Liman, 2002), Bourneova nadmoć (Paul Greengrass, 2004) i Bourneov ultimatum do promjene ne dolazi, nego se akcije nižu jedna za drugom. Čak i u onim rijetkim trenucima u kojima glazba napokon staje, zamjenjuju je zvučni efekti i šumovi.5 Jedino mjesto gdje se puls, šumovi, efekti, rapidna montaža i nemirna kamera u filmovima o Bourneu zaustav- ljaju jest – odjavna špica. 80 POZNATO, TRADICIONALNO, NOVO: ODJAVNE ŠPICE TRILOGIJE O BOURNEU U posljednjim kadrovima Bourneova ultimatuma dolazi do jasne promjene: mijenja se brzina iznošenja informacija, brzina odvijanja događaja i tempo filma. Iako gledatelj još uvijek prati nekoliko usporednih radnji (Bourne/ Webb pada u East River; Pamela Landy daje iskaz o operacijama Treadstone i Blackbriar;

Uh-oh, it looks like your Internet Explorer is out of date. Their new target: a crippling blow to the American economy. View 1 comment. Even his excuse to keep them safe doesn't make sense. Are you that narrow-minded that you can't think of anything original? After being dropped of at Kirsch's apartment by Petra, Bourne finds a tiny transmitter planted on his passport. Sensing an opportunity to take control of CI by showing Hart's incompetence, National Security Agency operatives plan to accomplish what CI never could-hunt down and kill Bourne. The organization, the Black Legion, and its lethal plot have also popped up on the radar of Central Intelligence, where new director Veronica Hart is struggling to assert her authority. After the meeting Bourne calls Specter. After reading this next installment of the Bourne saga, I'm considering if it is even worth continuing. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Having since gone back and read the original three Ludlum novels and the two other Lustbader follow-on novels, coming back to this book again six years later makes a whole heap more sense than I remember before. I'll read the next one though I feel like the Jack Reacher novels I've read 4 so far offer a superior level of entertainment with a flawed hero character similar to Bourne in ability but who is able to use his brain more and figure out things better which makes those novels generally more interesting.

  • How to Sell a Boring Action Hero an Analysis of the Success of the Bourne Ultimatum Within the Context of Corporate Hollywood
    How to sell a boring action hero An analysis of the success of The Bourne Ultimatum within the context of corporate Hollywood Abstract Jason Bourne is certainly not your typical action hero. He may share his initials with that other undercover icon James Bond, but ultimately, they have very little else in common. Jason Bourne is ordinary looking, has no sparkling personality, and no apparent sense of humor. To make things worse, he suffers from amnesia. Initially, all he knows about himself is that he displays impressive situational awareness, has an astonishing set of fighting skills, and that parties unknown want to kill him. Consequently, he looks confused whenever he is not otherwise engaged in dispatching bad guys. Nor is there any eye candy — no beaches and no babes — to make up for his otherwise rather dull personality. Even the final outcome of the Bourne films to date is far from uplifting. Ultimately, Bourne lays bare the moral bankruptcy of the West and its main political and economic systems. A boring action hero in a politically engaged story? This sounds like a recipe for disaster at the box office and yet the Bourne trilogy is one of the most successful Hollywood franchises in recent years. How did Jason Bourne acquire such a huge audience and critical acclaim? Can a film be both mass entertainment and score high on an artistic scale? How did anti- corporatism and anti-capitalism find its way into mainstream Hollywood? How does all this fit into the marketing strategies of Universal Studios? To summarize: Is there still hope for Hollywood, both aesthetically and ethically? Introduction An unconscious man is picked up by a fishing boat, bullet-riddled and without memory.

QUICK THOUGHTS: ● PHIL ● MARISA ● JOHN DEVELOPMENT ● Matt Damon told reporters that he had no plans to return to the franchise unless director Paul Greengrass was planning to do the same. ○ “I think in terms of another one, the story of this guy's search for his identity is over, because he's got all the answers, so there's no way we can trot out the same character, and so much of what makes him interesting is that internal struggle that was happening for him, am I a good guy, am I a bad guy, what is the secret behind my identity, what am I blocking out, why am I remembering these disturbing images? So all of that internal propulsive mechanism that drives the character is not there, so if there was to be another one then it would have to be a complete reconfiguration, you know, where do you go from there? For me I kind of feel like the story that we set out to tell is has now been told. I love the character, and if Paul Greengrass calls me in ten years and says, 'Now we can do it, because it's been ten years and I have a way to bring him back,' then there's a world in which I can go, 'Yeah, absolutely.' We could get the band back together if there was a great idea behind it, but in terms of now and this story, that part—the story's been told…” ● No mention yet of Viggo Mortensen, who had been rumored for a part in the fifth Bourne movie, and may still surface as details continue to emerge ● Bourne Legacy: ○ “This is not a reboot, it's a whole new chapter.
