This time Suzhou has an honour to host sports scientists from all over the world. But this time our ITTF Sports Science and medical Committee has taken a step forward and combining the sports science medical knowledge of all four major racquet sports. So Suzhou will witness another very successful ITTF Sports Science Congress and Racquet Sports Congress, unfold prior to the start of the competition. It is only fitting that this event is held at Soochow University, which specializes in “communications”. It is utmost importance that research papers and scientific findings are “communicated” to table tennis community in practical terms to be understood by the coaches and players. The same thoughts are also sent to other racquet sports. At this point I would like to underline, that the most important from the point of view of ITTF is “applied” research. Applied research that will provide practical, theoretical and immediate applications. Applications that will support our decision when we need to change our activity and improvement by finding solutions to our problems. This statement stands true especially in direction of our PP5 development plan. I urge sport scientists and researchers – not only from table tennis but also from other racquet sports – to look for the future, to anticipate trends, to provide us with a glimpse of what could be and what should be our sport in years to come, to help us leap forward based on scientific principles. I urge you to combine the knowledge of all racquet sports and find the way to make our sport even healthier. The ITTF counts on you to guide the way to a healthy and safe future for our sport while maintaining the athletic and technical performance of our athletes. I also ask you to work closely with the coaches and the players to develop future trends that would enhance our sport. On behalf of the ITTF, I welcome you all to the 14th ITTF Sport Science Congress and the 5th Racquet Sports Congress and I hope that the more than 235 abstracts submitted by contributors from 14 states and 3 continents will ensure an interesting debate and be thought-provoking for all the participants. I am very grateful to the organizers of this event, the 53rd WTTC Organization Committee, Soochow University, China Table Tennis Association and members of the ITTF Sports Science and Medical Committee. I hope you enjoy the Congress and make new friends while renewing old ones. I also invite you after the congress to watch exciting matches at the 53rd World Table Tennis Championships. Thomas Weikert President ITTF Book of abstracts 5 14th International Table Tennis Sports Science Congress and 5th World Racquet Sports Congress–Suzhou, April 23rd–25th 2015 Message from Chinese Table Tennis Association CTTA President's Message Upon the opening of the 53rd World Table Tennis Championships, I am deeply delighted to see best researchers and scholars in our sport have assembled in the beautiful city of Suzhou from all over the world to exchange latest progress in research, and to discuss the trend of development. Hereby, on behalf of the Chinese Olympic Committee and Chinese Table Tennis Association, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all the representatives present, and express my sincere congratulations to the grand opening of the Sports Science Congress. Science and technology innovation, a powerful engine to the sustainable development of sports, has driven all the progress of table tennis, from chop to loop, backspin to topspin, and smaller to bigger ball. With a history of more than a century, table tennis has developed into a sport that is not only loved by people as an active event in international competitions, but also a popular way for the public to improve physique and keep fit. Research has shown that playing table tennis regularly can enhance the intelligence of young people, temper their willpower, and improve their mental capacity to stand setbacks; In addition, it will also play a positive role in upgrading public health and happiness. I sincerely hope that Chinese Table Tennis Association can work together with you in promoting the continuous progresses of table tennis, and to

  • Table Tennis Strokes: Power, Rhythm and Speed Combinations
Table Tennis strokes: power, rhythm and speed combinations LI Xiaodong STROKE COMBINATION VS STROKE LINK Combination : Stroke combination as I understand it is relation between one ball and the following ball. This relation can between same kind of balls as well as between different kind of balls. The scope of combinations is very big. There are many combinations of rhythm, many combinations of power etc. Combinations can be more or less effective. I can play one ball with lot of power, the ball is coming back very fast, and if I try to play again with lot of power, it wouldn't be reasonable; usually it will not be as successful as for instance playing the next ball with medium power. An example of successful combination can be first powerful loop and then the spin loop with less power. Stroke link : The idea of stroke linking in fact is principally the same as stroke combination, however the idea of combination offers more variations. Linking is, as I understand it, continuous using of two various techniques, so this category is more limited. For example many people talk about linking attack with defence -'first attack, then defence', or 'first defence, then attack'. It is rather complicated. "First attack, then defence' link seems to be more difficult and is bigger challenge. Both links have differences - in attack you merely use your own power, in defence you 'borrow the power' a lot; in attack your centre of gravity is in front, in defence you centre of gravity is behind, in attack your swing is rather large, in defence your swing is short etc.

  • China's Sporting Public Still Faces Hurdles After Olympics 22:00, August 23, 2008
China's sporting public still faces hurdles after Olympics 22:00, August 23, 2008 China's Olympians have racked up a record gold medal haul, but many Chinese find it difficult to transfer their pride in the nation's achievements to their own personal sporting fields. For 29 year-old Bai Yang, going to the Beijing Workers' Stadium for an Olympic football semifinal was one of his few sporting pleasures. "I have little time to do sports on weekdays. At weekends, I'm just too tired to get out of bed," said Bai, who lives and works in Beijing. "Sports is not popular in China," he said. "You can see the elderly doing morning routines in the park, but young people, who need exercise just as much, have no time or energy." Having roared ahead of every other country with 48 gold medals, China showcased its sporting prowess at the Games, but many still ask whether it has achieved the status of a great power in terms of sport for all. For many Chinese interested in certain sports or living in less-developed areas, economic challenges and a lack of venues prove to be their biggest hurdles. "There are only six standard softball courts in a city as large as Beijing," says Sun Bojie, technical operations manager at the Fengtai Olympic softball field and a veteran umpire, complaining the game was failing to catch the public imagination. Moreover, fees for the available venues are "strikingly high", further dampening interest, says China's softball coach, Wang Lihong. "Even if the Chinese team had won gold this time, softball would still lack attention a month later." Sports resources are more scarce in the vast rural area and small cities of China.

  • Table Tennis - Overview Table Tennis, Also Called Ping Pong, Is a Sport That Originated in the Victorian Period in England
COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 Table Tennis - Overview Table tennis, also called ping pong, is a sport that originated in the Victorian period in England. High-class people used to play table tennis after dinner. It was initially played by stacking books at the center of a table and hitting a golf ball with thick books. Table tennis needs a lot of attention and speed. Professional table tennis is played on a hard table which is divided by a net. Players stand opposite to each other, and hit a lightweight ball with a small round bat across the table. Spinning the ball makes the chances of hitting the ball a lot less. So, players tend to spin the ball before serving it to the opponent. Table tennis is played as singles as well as doubles. It is played in both men’s and women’s category. Table tennis is played by the rules set by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Participating Countries Table tennis is not confined to England only. It is an Olympic sport and is played by many countries. Unlike any other sport, table tennis is governed by different governing bodies responsible for that particular continent’s table tennis. The Spirit of Pong by Larry Hodges Copyright 2015 v07-03-15 Cover Illustration by Mike Mezyan of Mezyantt.com Bonus Short Story at End Ping-Pong Ambition The Spirit of Pong Dedication To table tennis players everywhere. Especially the spirited ones. 2 The Spirit of Pong Introduction This story was many years in the almost-making. I’m a professional table tennis coach & writer, and a professional science fiction & fantasy writer. What could be more natural than combining these two? Just about anything else. Let’s face it. Most stories about table tennis use the sport as a punch line. How could anyone take ping-pong seriously? But how about the Olympic Sport of Table Tennis? They really are the same thing, and you can call it either one. I actually like the stories that make fun of the sport! Those who know our sport know better. Those who don’t—well, why not take a quick trip to www.youtube.com, search for “Olympic Table Tennis,” and see what comes up? I’ve always wanted to combine the two, but it’s not easy finding a mix. I did write and sell “Ping-Pong Ambition,” the bonus short story at the end of this book. But I wanted something more serious. And then, one day, I mused over the idea of an American going to China to learn the secrets of table tennis . and this story was the result. This is not a conventional story, this is a fantasy. You will meet the spirits of a number of the past greats of our sport, and even the spirits of “what made them great” for some current and living players.
