Jon Oman, the city’s operations manager, said that VTF Excavating of Celina, Ohio, the contractor installing the new north side sewer line, dug a trench to connect the new line to the old sewer line. A water line was also in that trench. The trench collapsed — Oman emphasized that no one was in it — and when it did, it snapped the water line. Dave Hendricks, the city’s water distribution supervi- sor, posted a notice on the city’s website that water service would not be available for at least four hours following the break, which occurred about 2 p.m. Tuesday. When the water came back on, his notice said, a boil water advisory would be in effect until further notice. Mayor John Whicker said Tuesday the advisory is in place for 48 hours. Oman said the city must have a water pressure of 20 pounds per square inch in a water line and the break put the pressure well below that. Because of that, Indiana Depart- ment of Environmental Management guidelines put the boil advisory in place. “It is recommended that all cooking and drinking water be brought to a complete boil for five minutes before using,” Hendricks’ notice said. “Please continue to boil all cooking Workers from the city of Bluffton’s water department and VTF Excavating consider their next moves to repair a water main break (Continued on Page 2) east of Main Street and south of Sutton Circle on the city’s north side.
