  • Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide
Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Overview These six videos are presented and performed by jazz and blues pianist, composer, singer, producer and educator Eli Yamin. The videos vary in length from 3 to 12 minutes. The title of the series aptly denotes the content because Eli Yamin and his group of master musicians truly do “celebrate” 5 songs of Dave Brubeck. Each video examines and performs a specific song and its unique qualities. Although the focus is always the music, the lessons easily apply to literacy and language arts standards, grades 6-12. The amount of time spent on the lessons can be decided by the teachers, depending on students’ interest, needs, and planning. Below is a brief summary of the content of each video to help teachers decide which best suits their curriculum. It is recommended that all the videos be studied in order to provide a full scope of Brubeck’s music, but the lessons and videos can each stand alone. Dave Brubeck Brief Background Dave Brubeck was a famous jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader who lived from 1920 to 2012. He founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 after playing for several years in his group called the Dave Brubeck Octet. His group became very popular in the 1950s, most notably for his combination of great melodies, strong sense of swing, and unusual meters and rhythms from around the globe. Some of his more popular songs are "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." He collaborated with quartet member Paul Desmond on numerous compositions; Desmond’s “Take Five” became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than one million copies.

  • Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond
Kvartetten fik international succes efter albummet 'Time Out' udkom i 1959.

  • Marking Time and Sounding Difference: Brubeck, Temporality and Modernity
Popular Music (2010) Volume 29/3. Copyright © Cambridge University Press 2010, pp. 351–371 doi:10.1017/S0261143010000243 Marking time and sounding difference: Brubeck, temporality and modernity ANDY BIRTWISTLE Department of Media, Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury CT2 7HD, UK E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In critical writing on the music of Dave Brubeck, little attention has been paid to the use of poly- rhythm, despite the fact that this has been central to Brubeck’s approach to jazz since the late 1940s. Focusing on work recorded by the ‘classic’ Dave Brubeck Quartet, the article aims to re-evalu- ate Brubeck’s use of polyrhythm by situating it within a cultural history of modernity, rather than the established discourses of jazz musicology. The article revisits the early 1960s to reconstruct the context provided for the music not only by articles printed in the music press, but also by news stories and features run in the popular press, and by the visual signifiers that coalesce around Brubeck. Articulated through the key tropes of modernity and difference, the press’s construction of Brubeck during this period signals the broad cultural context of Modernism as an alternative frame within which his musical practice might be usefully situated. The article explores how two key cultural arte- facts emerging from this context – Brubeck’s Oakland home, and the Miró canvas featured on the cover of the album Time Further Out – might serve to provide a productive means by which to re-evaluate the radical potential of Brubeck’s polyrhythm. Introduction I wanted to do things polyrhythmically because I thought that jazz was much too tame.

  • The Compositional Style of William O. Smith a Research Project
The Compositional Style of William O. Smith A Research Project Submitted for the Doctor of Musical Arts Qualifying Examination by Rachel Yoder University of North Texas March 13, 2010 ! "! Composer and clarinetist William O. Smith has led a dual life in the worlds of jazz and classical music. His name is familiar to clarinetists due to his pioneering work with multiphonics and other extended techniques for the clarinet. As Bill Smith, he is known in the jazz world for his work as composer and clarinetist in the Brubeck Octet, and later, the Brubeck Quartet. Neither of these identities tells the complete story of Smith, whose accomplishments as a performer and composer are wide-ranging and have had a significant impact on American music. Smith is seldom recognized as an important twentieth-century composer, although his contributions to American jazz and classical composition are considerable. Some of Smith’s music is clearly jazz, and some is twelve-tone music in the tradition of the Second Viennese School. Much of his compositional output, though, manages to incorporate these seemingly contradictory styles into a cohesive whole. His sheer virtuosity and creativity as a clarinetist also influences his compositions, which make great demands on the performer. By examining several of his works for solo clarinet, Smith’s development as a composer can be traced from his early days as a student of Darius Milhaud, to his experimentation with extended techniques for clarinet, integration of jazz and classical composition, and his later work with double clarinets, theatrical elements, and computer. Early Influences Most musicians focus on either jazz or classical music early in their careers, but William O.

Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. ************************************ All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between The Regents of the University of California and Dave and Iola Brubeck, dated September 30, 1999. Because of Brubeck’s thorough training in both classical and jazz idioms, he has often been described as the first musician to fuse jazz and classical music successfully.2 The meeting of classical and jazz idioms is pervasive in Brubeck’s output. For instance, he famously introduced asymmetric meter into jazz with his 1959 album Time Out, which includes the highly popular tunes “Take Five” (in quintuple meter) and “Blue Rondo à la Turk” (written in 9/8, but with an irregular grouping of beat divisions: 2 + 2 + 2 + 3). Brubeck incorporated an even more radical aspect of twenti- eth-century music into jazz through his use of polytonality.3 Polytonality is a term that has yet to be defined to the satisfaction of all, and such agreement will likely never happen.4 This impasse is due to the inherent contradiction of the term itself and the ambiguity of the musical technique. In its most literal inter- pretation, polytonality
