Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Curriculum Guide Eli Yamin Celebrates the Dave Brubeck Quartet Overview These six videos are presented and performed by jazz and blues pianist, composer, singer, producer and educator Eli Yamin. The videos vary in length from 3 to 12 minutes. The title of the series aptly denotes the content because Eli Yamin and his group of master musicians truly do “celebrate” 5 songs of Dave Brubeck. Each video examines and performs a specific song and its unique qualities. Although the focus is always the music, the lessons easily apply to literacy and language arts standards, grades 6-12. The amount of time spent on the lessons can be decided by the teachers, depending on students’ interest, needs, and planning. Below is a brief summary of the content of each video to help teachers decide which best suits their curriculum. It is recommended that all the videos be studied in order to provide a full scope of Brubeck’s music, but the lessons and videos can each stand alone. Dave Brubeck Brief Background Dave Brubeck was a famous jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader who lived from 1920 to 2012. He founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 after playing for several years in his group called the Dave Brubeck Octet. His group became very popular in the 1950s, most notably for his combination of great melodies, strong sense of swing, and unusual meters and rhythms from around the globe. Some of his more popular songs are "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." He collaborated with quartet member Paul Desmond on numerous compositions; Desmond’s “Take Five” became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than one million copies. -

Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond – Et umage par Oplæg udarbejdet af Flemming Vestergaard for Gladsaxe Bibliotekernes jazzlytteklub, marts 2016 Dave Brubeck blev født i 1920 i Californien og voksede op på en farm. Han kom på college og efter nogen tid som dyrlægestuderende skiftede han til konservatioriet. Han studerede klassisk musik om dagen og spillede jazz om natten på mindre steder. Hans første professionelle orkester var en oktet, dannet 1946 med andre studerende, og senere en trio med Cal Tjader, som fik en vis anerkendelse. Han startede sin kvartet med Paul Desmond i 1952 og de fik hurtig succes på colleges på USA's vestkyst. I 1958 var den klassiske kvartet samlet da Joe Morello kom med på trommer, efter at bassisten Eugene Wright kom med i 1956. Kvartetten fik international succes efter albummet 'Time Out' udkom i 1959. Det indeholder det nummer, der skulle blive deres 'signatur' nummer, Take Five, med den catchy 5/4 rytme. Efter mange år med indspilninger og turneer opløste Brubeck kvartetten i 1967 for at få mere tid til familie og til at skrive kompostioner til musicals mv. Han fandt dog stadig tid til at spille med andre, bl. a. vestkyst- ikonet Gerry Mulligan (som Desmond også samarbejde med) Efter 1977 vedblev Brubeck med at være aktiv og udgav mange albums, både soloindspilninger og med sin nye kvartet, som bl.a. bestod af hans søn Chris Brubeck (b). Andre musikere han spillede med var Randy Jones (dr), Bobby Militello (as), Bill Smith (as) m.fl. Dave Brubeck døde i 2012, 92 år gammel. Paul Desmond blev født i 1924 i San Fransisco, startede med klarinet, senere alt-sax. -

Focusing on work recorded by the ‘classic’ Dave Brubeck Quartet, the article aims to re-evalu- ate Brubeck’s use of polyrhythm by situating it within a cultural history of modernity, rather than the established discourses of jazz musicology. The article revisits the early 1960s to reconstruct the context provided for the music not only by articles printed in the music press, but also by news stories and features run in the popular press, and by the visual signifiers that coalesce around Brubeck. Articulated through the key tropes of modernity and difference, the press’s construction of Brubeck during this period signals the broad cultural context of Modernism as an alternative frame within which his musical practice might be usefully situated. The article explores how two key cultural arte- facts emerging from this context – Brubeck’s Oakland home, and the Miró canvas featured on the cover of the album Time Further Out – might serve to provide a productive means by which to re-evaluate the radical potential of Brubeck’s polyrhythm. Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. We believe that music is a vital piece of any student’s overall education, and are determined to keep that belief at the forefront of our mission to bring high quality, affordable performances that inspire and delight our audiences. This year’s YPC theme is “Celebrating our American Heritage,” and we are excited to bring Chris Brubeck back as our featured guest artist. The program highlights several types of American genres (classical, minimalism, jazz, and musicals) and composers (Aaron Copland, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Steve Reich).
