The paper is divided into two parts. Part One is written by Scott Bennett of the Politics and Public Administration Section. It is written as: • a journal of record • a discussion of the election campaign and • a discussion of the election outcome. Appendices give: • the election timetable • names of the departing Members of the House of Representatives and Senators • details of the new members of each house and • details of the number of women in the two chambers, including comparisons with the previous three parliaments. Part Two comprises a comprehensive set of statistics compiled by Stephen Barber of the Statistics and Mapping Section. Tables contain: • national, state and regional vote summaries • details concerning electoral divisions • two-party preferred figures and • the party strengths in the two houses of the Commonwealth Parliament. Objection Number 12 Anthony Rossiter 5 pages Queensland secretariat Phone 07 3834 3458 Fax 07 3834 3496 Email FedRedistr [email protected] 2017 Redistribution of Queensland into Electoral Divisions Objection to the Redistribution Proposal Anthony Rossiter 23 October 2017 Overview The Redistribution Committee of Queensland report, released on 29 September 2017, proposed minimal alterations to existing electoral division boundaries, with an estimated 1.09 per cent of Queensland electors being transferred to another division. This objection to the redistribution proposal generally supports the strategy adopted by the Redistribution Committee. However, in a few instances, it appears that the Committee has unduly prioritised the minimal movement of electors at the expense of the other guiding principles it carefully articulated in paragraph 82 (page 30) of their report. Rather than suggest wholesale changes to the proposed redistribution, this objection makes a series of small amendments, consistent with the numerical requirements of the Electoral Act, to improve communities of interest by providing stronger boundaries and/or better aligning divisional boundaries with locality or local government area boundaries. If all changes were adopted by the Augmented Electoral Commission, the boundaries of 12 electoral divisions would be amended in minor ways and not be significantly different from the Redistribution Committee’s proposal. In net terms, approximately 5 135 more people would change divisions, implying around 38 739 electors (1.25 per cent of the current Queensland electoral roll) in total would switch division if all the minor changes suggested here are adopted by the augmented Electoral Commission. The proposed Fadden/Moncrieff boundary While the bulk of the locality of Southport is contained within the Division of Moncrieff, a small section of the suburb north of Stevens Street (compromising one SA1 coded 126628) remains in the Division of Fadden. -

The Federal Redistribution 2009 QUEENSLAND Comment Number 41 on Public Suggestions Kate Townsend 107 pages 8 May 2009 Redistribution Committee 7th Floor, 488 Queen Street Brisbane, QLD4000 Dear Redistribution Committee, Thank you for the opportunity to make comments in relation to the 2009 redistribution of electoral division boundaries in Queensland. Attached are comments on the submissions received by the Committee thus far, along with a proposal that may provide the Committee with a real, viable alternative to the overtly partisan submissions lodged by the major political parties. It appears from previous redistributions that the Committee is sometimes constrained in implementing the comments and objections made by lay members of the public because of the need to fit these comments into a workable, State-wide solution. This difficulty is perfectly understandable - hence the comments in this submission are made in the context of a workable State-wide proposal which, it is submitted, is far superior to those lodged by the major parties. This submission is better than those submitted by the major parties because: • This submission does not propose any "dog-leg" areas sticking out from the boundaries of divisions. These dog-leg areas protruding out from the general area of a division are an obvious attempt by political parties to seek to influence the political margins of divisions by joining non-contiguous areas together within one division, when other adjacent areas are more suitable together. For examples, look at the ALP's suggestion for the north-east corner of Forde, or its suggestion for the north-east corner of Fisher, or look at the LNP's suggestion for Kennedy or the eastern end of Moreton; • In fact, this submission remedies a number of apparent "dog-leg" areas that currently exist in the present boundaries.
