Catholic education, and the students who are the product of it, have been called the “greatest work of the Church”. They have been entrusted with the fullness of faith and have been charged with the mission of evangelization. They are to go out into the world and share the gifts they have received, as doctors, law- yers, policemen, firemen, businessmen and women, teachers, priests and religious, all as Catholic school graduates. Catholic school grad- uates are a leaven in society, helping the broader community to be the best that it can be. St. Mary students strive to learn that God is present and active in their lives and in the world. They learn to recognize the “footprints of God” in their daily experiences, especially in the midst of life’s challenges. They develop a sense of “sacramental aware- ness”. They see the signs of God’s love around them and become instruments of God’s grace in their own neighborhoods, communi- ties, and the world. In an incarnational view of the world, there is no such thing as a secular subject as all learning helps to develop and bring to full bloom that image of God that is in each person. Some will say that what I want for our Catholic School, and what it is now falls short of your lofty vision. Well, there may be some truth in that; and that is why we must strive to reflect, discern, and improve! With your help and support, St. Mary Catholic School will work hard to be worthy of your generosity. Thank you for making this annual St. Mary Parish and School Carnival such a success. Your generosity helps to keep St. Mary Catholic School possible, for all who desire a Catholic Education. It is my hope that a new chapter in the history of St. Mary Catholic School will be written, buildings age out, they come and go, but the tradition, and memories endure. Truly, the best is yet to come! Thank you, and may God bless you now and always! Peace to you and yours, Rev. Shane D. Stevens Pastor-Superintendent Saint Mary Catholic Church and School 86 3 Where Does the Carnival Money Go? One question that often gets asked of our Carnival Committee members is “Where is my money going?” The short answer to that question: that money goes toward providing the highest-quality Catholic education possible to our students at an affordable price. Every dollar that is raised at the Carnival goes straight in to the St. Mary School Account. The money raised keeps tuition costs low and affordable. The average cost to educate a child at St. Mary is around $6,000/ student, but the highest tuition level is for a high Seniors Back Row: Austin Green LeBrun, Sam Palmer, Ashaun Roach-Valandra, school student at $3,450/student with an average Thomas Eining, Samuel Lack, Middle Row: Noah Dennis, Jacob Vogel, Clay tuition intake of $2,000/student. That difference Wolles, Connar Kangas, Connor Libis, Colin Winberg, Jon Bares, Hunter between actual cost and tuition charged is subsidized Griffin, Nick Wolles Front Row: Karlie Klein, Maggie Klein, Ella Heinitz, Zoey through the other income sources at St. Mary: Church Curl, Julie Saude, Lauren Rasmussen, Macie Brown, Teri Schoeberl Support, the Alumni Appeal, Padres, and of course the St. Mary Carnival and Auction. The Carnival & Auction this year is budgeted to gross $320,000, and the St. Mary total budgeted revenue is $1,535,804. In other words, the Carnival & Auction provides around 21% of the total operating budget for St. Mary. Without the Carnival & Auction that $320,000 ‘hole’ would have to be filled by tuition, meaning tuition would increase by about $1,500/ student. This would make tuition unaffordable for many families and would not allow the school to fulfill its mission. When you give to the Carnival and Auction, you are helping many families continue to receive the highest-quality Catholic education. 4 85 What happens when the Carnival & Auction brings in more money than the budgeted amount? All the ‘extra’ money stays in the school checking/savings account to be used solely for school expenses. Again, every dollar raised through the Carnival & Auction stays with St. Mary School! Thank you for your support of the Carnival & Auction Your contributions help subsidize the cost of education to keep St. Mary affordable for our families. We would not be able to operate without this special day and are so blessed by the support you all show! The first couple of years the carnival was run by staff and took place in the lunchroom following the Spring Concert. In 1978, Sr. Lois Ann took over the carnival activities and began recruiting parents to help. Thank you to all the past committee members for your hard work and fun ideas!
