NEWS RELEASE ATN BRINGS YOU INDIA-ENGLAND CRICKET SERIES TORONTO, CANADA November 17th 2008 Asian Television Network International Limited (ATN) (TSX-SAT), Canada’s pioneer South Asian Broadcaster and Canada’s largest Distributor of World Class Cricket announces it has secured the Canadian Broadcast Rights for the cricket series between England and India which just commenced. This series of 7 ODI’s and 2 Test matches will be shown live on CBN and re-broadcast on ATN- Cricket Plus. India won the recently completed series with Australia and is keen to continue their winning ways. England has also had recent success and is focused on defeating their long time rival. These games feature two of the worlds Cricket powerhouse teams and will take place in India. Cricket’s most successful Minor County and the first to beat a First-Class County, Durham was awarded first class professional status in December 1991 – the only new First-Class County in over 70 years – and became a private limited company in 2004. Since 2007 DCCC has won the County Championship three times and been runners up once, won the Fifty Over Competition twice in Lord’s finals and appeared twice in T20 Finals Day. Since becoming a first-class county, DCCC has established English cricket’s most successful academy, producing international stars for England, including Steve Harmison, Paul Collingwood, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes Durham CCC created the first new English Test Match stadium in over 100 years securing a long- term stadium naming rights sponsorship with Emirates Airways. The venue has a 15,000 permanent seating capacity and the Club has staged international cricket every year since 1999, including the successful Ashes Test held in 2013 and three games in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository “Who do ‘they’ cheer for?” Cricket, diaspora, hybridity and divided loyalties amongst British Asians Dr Thomas Fletcher Carnegie Faculty for Sport Leisure and Education Leeds Metropolitan University [email protected] This article explores the relationship between British Asians’ sense of nationhood, citizenship, ethnicity and some of their manifestations in relation to sports fandom: specifically in terms of how cricket is used as a means of articulating diasporic British Asian identities. I place Norman Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ at the forefront of this article to tease out the complexities of being British Asian in terms of supporting the English national cricket team. The first part of the article locates Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ within the wider discourse of multiculturalism. The analysis then moves to focus on the discourse of sports fandom and the concept of ‘home team advantage’. I argue that sports venues represent significant sites for nationalist and cultural expression due to their connection with national history. I highlight how supporting ‘Anyone but England’, thereby rejecting ethnically exclusive notions of ‘Englishness’ and ‘Britishness’, continues to be a definer of British Asians’ cultural identities. The final section situates these trends within the discourse of hybridity and argues that sporting allegiances are often separate from considerations of national identity and citizenship. Rather than placing British Asians in an either/or situation, viewing British ‘Asianness’ in hybrid terms enables them to celebrate their traditions and histories, whilst also being proud of their British citizenship.
