  • Cricket, Diaspora, Hybridity and Divided Loyalties Amongst British Asians
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository “Who do ‘they’ cheer for?” Cricket, diaspora, hybridity and divided loyalties amongst British Asians Dr Thomas Fletcher Carnegie Faculty for Sport Leisure and Education Leeds Metropolitan University [email protected] This article explores the relationship between British Asians’ sense of nationhood, citizenship, ethnicity and some of their manifestations in relation to sports fandom: specifically in terms of how cricket is used as a means of articulating diasporic British Asian identities. I place Norman Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ at the forefront of this article to tease out the complexities of being British Asian in terms of supporting the English national cricket team. The first part of the article locates Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ within the wider discourse of multiculturalism. The analysis then moves to focus on the discourse of sports fandom and the concept of ‘home team advantage’. I argue that sports venues represent significant sites for nationalist and cultural expression due to their connection with national history. I highlight how supporting ‘Anyone but England’, thereby rejecting ethnically exclusive notions of ‘Englishness’ and ‘Britishness’, continues to be a definer of British Asians’ cultural identities. The final section situates these trends within the discourse of hybridity and argues that sporting allegiances are often separate from considerations of national identity and citizenship. Rather than placing British Asians in an either/or situation, viewing British ‘Asianness’ in hybrid terms enables them to celebrate their traditions and histories, whilst also being proud of their British citizenship.

Assessing Decision Rules For Stopped Cricket Games Assessing decision rules for stopped cricket games Ahsan Bhatti, B. Sc., A. Stat A project Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science McMaster University c 2015 Ahsan Bhatti i Master of Science (2015) McMaster University Statistics Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Assessing Decision Rules For Stopped Cricket Games AUTHOR: Ahsan Bhatti SUPERVISOR: Professor Ben Bolker NUMBER OF PAGES: ix, 75 ii Abstract In interrupted limited overs cricket games, teams do not always get a chance to finish the full game. In such cases, different methods can be used to establish which team wins. The method currently in use is called the Duckworth-Lewis method; it was introduced at the international level in 1998. The purpose of this project is to investigate and check the accuracy of Duckworth-Lewis method and make statistical comparisons with other proposed methods. The accuracy is checked via bias estimation, Cohen's Kappa and root mean square error methods; cross-validation is used to assess out-of-sample accuracy. The resource table, a summary of the expected fraction of total runs scored by a given point in the game, has missing values and monotonicity flaws. To improve the resource table, different statistical methods such as isotonic regression and Gibbs sampling, are used to construct different resource surfaces. The accuracy results show that the Duckworth- Lewis displays the lowest accuracy out of all the methods; whereas, the improved Duckworth-Lewis is more accurate at predicting the new target or results of stopped games.

  • NEWSLETTER No. 265 - SEPTEMBER 2006
NEWSLETTER No. 265 - SEPTEMBER 2006 27 September 2006 – Meeting In time honoured fashion, the Society extends a very warm welcome to the Hampshire Beneficiary at their September meeting. TONY MIDDLETON has been with the County for some 20 years, first as a player and then in various coaching roles. He is now the County’s Academy Director. His well produced Benefit Brochure gives an informed account of his career and his contribution to Hampshire cricket since his retirement as a player. The publication gives a reminder that he is Hampshire-born, in Winchester on 1 February 1964, and that he progressed through the Hampshire schools and colts system, before making his debut in 1984. However, it was not until Chris Smith’s sudden departure in 1991, that he forged a regular first-team place. Such was the strength of Hampshire’s batting at the time – perhaps the best in their history – that in the previous year, he scored a century on four occasions, as well as a 90, only to be left out when one of Hampshire’s stellar cast returned to the side. He did, though, record a thousand runs. However, Tony Middleton cemented his place by dampening the fires of Waqar Younis in the Nat. West Trophy triumph at Lord’s with a well constructed 75, keeping Hampshire in touch with the run rate as they chased Surrey’s total. In the following year, in bowler-friendly conditions in the Benson and Hedges Final, he and Paul Terry stole runs from under the noses of Kent’s fielders to establish a momentum which was then enhanced by the later stroke players.

  • Matt Prior's Laser Vision Passes Batting Test
Matt Prior’s laser vision passes batting test Matt Prior ended the second day of the fifth test in spectacular form. Having returned from paternity leave, he put his Accuwave laser visioned eyes to good effect to post 131 not out and helped himself and Paul Collingwood to a record fifth wicket stand of 218 against the West Indies. Prior’s batting was free flowing and confident off the front foot. His accuracy in finding the gaps between the fielders, even when two gullies were added to try and stifle his performance was exemplary. Matt received an eye laser treatment called ‘Trans-epithelial LASIK at the Accuvision clinic. This ‘all laser’ procedure uses the laser to remove the surface layer of the eye (epithelium) leaving a smooth surface on which to apply the actual corrective laser treatment. Matt said of his laser eye surgery treatment, “I wanted a solution that would give me the best possible vision for my game and make frequent travelling and day to day life a lot easier. The procedure with Accuvision was simple and painless. Now I have better vision than I ever did with my contact lenses and no longer have to worry about misplaced glasses – it’s changed my life.” As far as Matt Prior is concerned, judging by his performance in the West Indies, his laser vision is really working well for him. WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE INDIAN CRICKET AUCTIONS The Indian Premier League’s Twenty20 competition has taken the cricket world by storm. The players, auctioned to the business and media groups granted franchises by the IPL, are getting $50,000 to $1.5m for six weeks’ play. Our analysis suggests the process has resulted in both bargains and bonanzas: that (apart from the superstars) batsmen have done relatively poorly, while the youngest Indian cricketers have done exceptionally well; and that some of England’s cricketers may have earned six-figure sums had they participated. The IPL – a new league formed to play Twenty20 cricket in India – has had a bigger impact on cricket power structures and player salaries than anything since the Packer revolution in the late 1970s. Twenty20 cricket is a recently introduced, frenetic and exciting variant. A complete game takes about three hours, compared with the five days for traditional Test matches, or the full single day for one-day internationals (ODIs). Twenty20 cricket rewards explosive power and quick thinking; Test cricket rewards patience, discipline and concentration. Æ 2 Frontier Economics | June 2008 RULES OF THE GAME In January, the IPL auctioned eight team-owning franchises to business and media groups, who paid US$67m-US$112m for the privilege. However, media rights, to be shared across the franchisees, have been sold for over $1bn.
