The Dishevelled Gentleman Vintage Books

Cricket has one of the richest literary traditions of any sport. It’s history is full of characters and moments such that, if you saw them you would never forget, and if you read about them you could scarcely believe. I love , and I love books on cricket. Anyone interested in forming a cricket book club, let me know.

The benefits of buying second hand books:

1. Fiscal: You typically pay less than half what you’d pay retail

2. Emotional: Collecting is fun, finding that rare, hard to find, out of print book (like a signed 1st edition Ray Robinson, for example) is an amazing feeling.

3. Environmental: the original recycling, no additional trees or water is used if you buy an old book in preference to a new one.

4. Emotional II: The feel and smell of a book is so much better than that of a kindle.

5. Practical: It can never out of batteries.

Many thanks and regards, Dusty Cricket: Classics: From Memory:

Jack Fingleton is my favourite writer on the game. Fingo knew everyone, he batted for an entire day with Bradman in a test match, yet they had a relationship that can only be described as . . . complex. He was press secretary to “The Little Digger” , confidant of Sir Bob Menzies, writer on politics, the man who brought Larwood to settle in , a good friend of Sir ; he had a rich life. His autobiography is like a fine bottle of red wine, smooth and warming. The more you imbibe the better you feel.

Beyond A : C. L. R. James

C. L. R. was one of the foremost thinkers of the 20th and devoted to the game. He describes this remarkable book as “neither cricket reminiscences nor autobiography. It poses the question What do they know of cricket who only cricket know?” It explores the game in the , it’s place in the Islands psyche, history, politics and social fabric. It also explores the game itself, it’s history, it’s character and artistry. After reading it you gain a completely new perspective of what cricket is. It is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read.

Between : Ray Robinson

Robinson’s great book on cricket and cricketers between the wars has developed a reputation as one of the greatest works in the cannon. He analyses Bradman and the effects on his batsmanship of , he delves into that series itself and he offers us insight into the character and greatness of the likes of O’Reilly, McCabe, Larwood, Sutcliffe & Jardine. He does all this while examining the events which shaped their era and squarely placing them in their context within the history of the game.

Sir Neville Cardus said of this book “It would be no great praise to describe this book as the best on cricket written by an Australian so far. He sees right through the master so clearly that we might at once call him X-Ray Robinson.”

Autobiography: Neville Cardus

Neville Cardus is the greatest writer on cricket who has lived. His Autobiography will enrich your life. When I read it I would sit on my balcony at home and watch the world go by. After every page the world I looked on was better that it had been before.

Thrown Out: Meckiff as told to Ian McDonald

This is a book in two parts. Ian’s career was short and bitter, accused of being a chucker, he was no balled out of the game. He was understandably upset by this and he pours out much of his frustration into this book. The second part is one of the best portrayals of the events of the 1961 West Indian tour of I’ve ever read. Starting with the closing moments of the first test in , the infamous , Ian takes us through the second last ball of the game, straining for the crease, head down, limbs outstretched, it was he who was with the scores level, it was a moment of destiny in an amazing series. Very good book.

Style: Hardback, Condition: Very Good, dust jacket is ragged at the top but I’ve covered it so it won’t deteriorate any further, pages clean and bright. Edition: 1st.

A Century of Cricketers: A.G. “Johnny” Moyes

Johnny Moyes was a first class cricketer of the early century and nearly played . He became a NSW selector and brought Bradman down from the bush. He worked as a journalist as well and wrote extensively on the game. His biography of Bradman is much sought after but I think this is his best book. In it he gives us glimpses of 100 of the great cricketers from the beginning of test cricket up to 1950. A lovely and enlightening read.

Farewell to Cricket:

This paperback edition is the 1994 reissue of the Don’s 1950 cricketing Auto biography. When the Don drew the curtain on his illustrious career he took that meticulous nature of his and channeled it into the creation of this book. He tells of his development as a cricketer, of his approach to the game, gives his opinions on all the issues of and his side of many of the controversies that plagued his time in the game (up to that point). He also tells of the personal triumphs and travails of his life outside the arena. He writes in a voice so strong you can hear that thin, high pitched drawl of his in every written word. This book is the corner stone of the cricket literature collection of any Australian aficionado.

On Top Down Under: Ray Robinson

One of the great books in the cannon of Australian cricket literature from one of the great writers on the game, Ray Robinson. Ray was a journalist who was known for religiously watching every ball of test matches. His Magnum Opus, On Top Down Under, tells the stories, lives, hopes and dreams of Australia’s Cricket Captains, from handsome to the tortured and maligned , with wit, humour and no small amount of insight.

The Paddock That Grew: Keith Dunstan

Keith Dunstan’s celebrated history of the MCG and MCC provides not just the definitive story of the development of the ground and the august institution, but also of the city in which they grew. Did you know they used to fight duels on Market Street in the mid nineteenth century? You would if you’d read this book. This 1974 edition is of larger size than I’ve seen before being 12’ x 9’ rather than the usual 9’ x 6’ and seems to contain more pictures from the MCC collection than other editions.

A Life-Long , The Story: Marc Fiddian

Jack Ryder was the pride of Collingwood and a great Victorian in the mode of . A hard hitting batsman and canny medium pace bowler, he captained Australia in 1928-29 during Bradman’s first series. In many ways Ryder, despite his great achievements is a forgotten cricketer (though not in Collingwood), Marc Fiddian is to be admired for bringing his story to light.

Cricket is My Life:

Sir Len was one of ’s greatest batsmen. Born in Pudsey he showed early promise, a classical, easy style, coupled with a somewhat cautious Yorkshire nature. He broke Bradman’s Ashes record score during the 1938 Oval marathon where England ran up 900 runs; had a horrible war, sustaining injuries that left one arm inches shorter than the other, yet overcame this to come back after the war to become England’s first ever professional .

Just My Story: Len Hutton

Just My Story was written shortly after his retirement and covers the period of his captaincy. As the first professional to be appointed to the England captaincy Len was under more pressure than his amateur predecessors. Though Lord Hawke had been dead for many years, no one had forgotten his pronouncement “Pray God, no professional shall ever captain England!”. In this book Len is very candid about many aspects of later career including the dropping of his great friend and colleague . He might have mentioned more of controversies that dogged the MCC tour of West Indies but on the whole he seems very much unburdened. His writing style is more mature and authoritative than his first autobiography and is a fascinating and enjoyable read.

The Golden Age of Australian Cricket: ed. Ken Piesse

This is the re-release of George Giffen’s “With Bat and Ball”. George was Australia’s W.G. Grace. The South Australian, born in 1859, was prolific with bat and ball and captained his state and his country. This book is a seminal work in the history of Australian cricket, one of the first books on cricket written in this country and it contains the memories and historical insights from one of our early greats.

The Urn Returns: Arthur (A. E. R.) Gilligan

One for the very serious collector. A. E. R. was a former England captain. This is his book of the ’54-55 Ashes. What makes this special is the printing defects, 4 or 5 sets of facing pages from the mid 20’s on are blank. Does that make it worth more?

Style: Hardback, Condition: Strange, no dust jacket, pages clean and bright (especially those that are blank). Edition:1st.

Vanity Fair: William Makepeace Thackeray

What is this book doing in the cricket section? This book inspired C.L.R James who would read it regularly. If one of the great writers on the game was inspired by it maybe there’s something to it.

The last golden age: Out of My Comfort Zone:

I think as soon as he walked off the SCG after his final test against , Steve went straight home, locked himself in a room for 18 months and poured forth absolutely every recollection he could muster on his life thus far into this 700+ page tome. It must set a record for the largest player autobiography ever written. Which means it contains a lot of detail on the 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th?) Golden Age of Australian cricket. He’s not Neville Cardus so, not unlike many of his innings, it’s tough going, but certainly very rewarding.

Style: Hardback, Condition: Very Good, dust jacket shows some wear but if fully polyethylene covered, pages clean and bright. Edition: 1st.

True Colours, My Life:

Adam’s autobiography is an emotional journey and paints an interesting portrait of his career. Unlike some biographies you don’t just get the picture of what was happening at the various stages of his career, but also how he felt about it (he’s very in touch with his feelings). His sensitivity and insecurities would even surface during those halcyon days when he was dominating every attack. An enjoyable read this one.

Standing My Ground: by

The Autobiography of the most destructive opening batsman of his generation, Standing My Ground is not the worst post career autobiography from a member of Australia’s great XI’s of the early 21st century. Quite an enjoyable read and a must for the collection of any serious cricket follower.

Shane Warne, My Autobiography: with Richard Hobson.

Written in 2001 with the help of Richard Hobson Warnie gives us an insight into the first couple of phases of his career and his development as a cricketer. Reading between the lines of the point of view of one of the greatest cricketers and characters the game (already rich in characters) has known, is as insightful and enjoyable as reading his lines at face value.

Spun Out, The Shane Warne Story:

This is the controversial and unauthorized biography of Shane Warne by the former 60 Minutes reporter. Warne shunned him but Barry talked to friends, relations and sympathizers of the great man and filled the gaps with very entertaining conjecture. The passage on how he arrives at the approximate of women he estimates Warne to have slept with is very revealing, not to mention absurdly funny.

Dizzy: as told to Lawrie Colliver

Together with Glen McGrath, Jason “Dizzy” Gillespie formed one of Australia’s great opening partnerships. He was great to watch, zipping the ball through at a fair clip with just a hint of wobble, almost imperceptible, like the faint wobble of starlight. Batsmen would hang their bats in the line of the ball only to have the ball pass the outside edge without seeming to have moved from its line. He passed the edge so often it sometimes seemed like a batsman would need a degree in quantum mechanics just in order to nick it. His batting was also great to watch. He developed from a proper tail-ender into dour blocker capable of frustrating even Indian spinners on raging turners, thence into a swashbuckling lower order all-rounder, capable of anything. And so it proved in where he hit up a dashing double century.

Worth the Wait:

New Australian coach Darren Lehmann was a talent long overlooked. Unlike many of the great state batsmen of the Waugh Golden Age, however, Jamie Siddens, and others of that ilk, Darren was able to play his part and share in the glory. He has a tremendous cricket brain, it has served him well on the field, though often not off it. His career was brief but he packed in enough controversy to fill the shoes of a 15 year veteran (well, nearly anyway, I exaggerate only slightly). He was picked as Aussie 12th man at 19, it was 8 more years before he made his debut.

Under the Southern Cross:

Boony was one of the greatest Aussie players to come out the mid 80’s. He played a big part in the rejuvenation of our national team, adding solidity and an amazing capacity for beer to our fragile middle order. You hardly ever hear him talk, and when he does he doesn’t say much, he rarely smiles yet for all that he was one of the great characters of the game. I’m not sure how that works . . . maybe it’s the moustache? In his autobiography you get to know what went on underneath the bristles.

Captain’s Diary 2009:

This is the inside story of a tumultuous year for the Aussie cricket team. Losses in India are not that uncommon, but to lose a test series at home and a test match at Lords? These were unheard of things and a sign of a team in decline. Not that it was all doom and gloom, there was the series win in South Africa and when all was said and done we did win six tests; which is only one fewer than we lost, it’s just that they weren’t the tests that counted.

Reiffel, Inside and Out: with Greg Baum

Paul was the work horse of Aussie teams of the 90’s, bowling up hill and into the wind (I know how he feels) he was much underrated as a bowler I think. He always hit the deck hard, great and often got just enough movement off the deck to trouble the batsman. This is his story.

Beyond Ten Thousand: Allan Border

This is the definitive autobiography of the man who dragged Australian cricket from the depths by his own sheer determination and bloody mindedness. I can’t imagine a more humble and staunch servant of the game. You won’t hear him singing his own praises, you get the sense that, despite all his accomplishments, he always felt like a kid playing on a hallowed field. He has a reputation for grumpiness, mainly because he always wore his heart on his sleeve. He also has an irrepressible sense of humor which come across beautifully in this celebration of the career of first Australian since to hold the world record for runs in test matches.

The subtitle for this book is ‘Kim Hughes and the bad old days of Australian cricket’. Kim’s career could have been so different if he hadn’t come to prominence during the Packer era. Botham, My Autobiography:

Botham’s 1994 autobiography was written just after the final selectorial rebuff put an end to his nth comeback attempt. Boy was he mad about it; and not just that either. Never short of self belief, he tells us what he really thinks of the selectors and many of the other characters he met during his controversial career (funny that none of those controversies were ever his fault). Though he is spleentive and rash (or more probably because he is) his book is a very entertaining read. 2 copies available.

The Whole Hogg: and Jon Anderson

Did you know that Greg Chappell didn’t talk to Hoggy for nearly a year over the aluminium bat incident? It wasn’t even his bat! said he looked stupid standing there with two wooden bats whilst being studiously ignored by a truculent Dennis Lillee. Greg called him the worst 12th man Australia has ever had. Hoggy told him to get stuffed, but he was only relaying Dennis’ message. It was a bad day for Hoggy, but a great story!

Bradman: Bradman’s Best:

Any list of the world greatest team is bound to contain very good cricketers, Bradman’s list is no exception. What makes Parry’s book exceptional is the thoroughness and detail into which Parry goes to paint a picture of the career of these 12 greats and to elucidate what it was that Bradman particularly admired about them. It’s like 12 fully realized biographies in 1. Parry spent the better part of the late 90’s hanging with the great man gathering material for this book and his biography of Bradman.

Bradman: Charles Williams

Much has been written on The Don, this 1997 biography aims to place him is his broader context as an Australian in a young nation struggling for identity on the international stage and to identify heroes of its own. regards this as the very best bio on Braddles, which is a big call. The Don himself said “It would be stupid to say I enjoyed or agreed with every word, every sentence, and every nuance, but I honestly believe it is a splendid production”. Not praise to be undervalued as Bradman didn’t appreciate many of the bios written about him.

Bradman the Illustrated Biography: Michael Page

Bill O’Reilly had some interesting things to say about Michael Page’s opinions of certain off field events expressed in this book. Haigh, Frith & McGilvray: On Warne:

Released in 2012, Haigh’s “On Warne” quickly became one of his most acclaimed books, and Haigh is no stranger to acclaim. His portrait of the greatest cricketer of his (our own) era evokes some of the great works of the cannon; Robinson on Bradman, Cardus on Richardson and Tyldesley, Mailey & Fingleton on Trumper. He deliberately limits his scope to the cricket field and avoids the muckraking of many Warne bios, that’s because this is not a bio, it’s a testament of a man and his art and his time. Like the other works I have mentioned it will preserve his memory for times to come for those who were not there to experience the thrill for themselves, of Warnie at the top of his mark, staring down the wicket at the poor unfortunate batsman, rolling the ball from hand to hand, with that devious half smile which said, “You’ve got no hope, mate!”

The Game is Not the Same…: Alan McGilvray & Norman Tasker

As arguably the greatest Aussie commentator ever (I think probably even better than Benaud), and a former NSW state captain, McGilvray’s views on and insight into the game are worth reading. They are as relevant today as they were when this book was published in the late 80’s. For example he states the ’72 and ’85 tours of England were doomed to failure as no bowler on either tour had experience bowling in The Old Country. If only the 2009 selectors had read this book! I recommend this one as an enlightening and enjoyable read.

Tales of old England: Calling the Shots:

Michael was one of the most successful English captains ever and will always be remembered for regaining the Ashes in 2005 after eighteen long years in the wilderness. Apart from that he was also a stylish left handed opener. I remember his 180 odd during the famous Steve Waugh test in Sydney 2003, he was robbed of a double century by one of the worst LBW decisions I’ve ever seen. It was only time I’d ever hoped an Englishman would score a double ton against Australia (How ironic that was the next POM to get one…). Smooth as silk Vaughan.

Fiery Fred Trueman was one of the great characters of cricket, a great Yorkshireman and a great fast bowler. What I like about Botham’s take on the “100 top . . .” genre is that he has chosen the 100 top characters and influences of his cricket life rather than the 100 best cricketers. Bradmans of the Bush: Ken Piesse & Alf Wilson

Cricket isn’t just played on the large stages of the world, it’s also played on synthetic pitches on obscure fields with nary any concrete to be seen. I once said to Nick Michael, park cricket is far better to watch than test cricket, there is always something happening (and you can spread out a picnic). But the great deeds performed there are unheralded and usually only of interest to the 22 people immediately involved. This book lifts out of that obscurity the deeds of those who toiled on fields outside the glare of the multitude that would otherwise have been lost to history.

What serpentine narration secretly connects the founding of the East India Company in 1600, a massacre of innocents at the siege of La Rochelle twenty- seven years later, and the publication of Lempriere’s celebrated classical dictionary on the eve of the French Revolution?
