Mumbai KP took his team to aTest win in his only five-day game so far,and was then at the helm as England stormed to a4-0 ODI series win against the Proteas. But taking ateam to India –who have just beaten Australia –isamong the toughest challenges for any international captain, and that’s why Lloyd believes England fans will know more about Pietersen the skipper after the seven ODIs and two Te sts. Lloyd said: “Making him captain has been abrave decision and should be commended. “But he is not going to be judged as acaptain by winning the last Te st of ahome series that has already been lost. “He’s going to be judged at times when his bowlers are tired and they cannot get awicket. “When it is hot and Sachin Te ndulkar is 130 not out. The soccer season, the most exhilarating sports season of the year has also arrived. • 371 – March 2018 (2)
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

! Keeping you connected … 2016 OCTOBER DINNER NEWSLETTER ! Geoff Miller returns to standing ovation ONE of Cheshire’s best-known former players Geoff Miller OBE proved to be one of the finest speakers of recent years at the League’s 42nd annual Presentation Dinner at The Mere on Friday, October 7. Addressing a league audience for the third time – he did so previously in 1985 at the Cresta Court, Altrincham and in 2003 at Mere, Geoff enraptured the240-strong assembly with wonderful tales of his times playing for Derbyshire, Essex and England, for whom he gained 36 caps between 1976 and 1984. Appointed OBE in 2011 after becoming the first England National selector, Geoff, now 64, dealt hilariously with his ‘mostly modest’ contributions to the game, starting with a duck on his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire at snowbound Buxton in 1975 He played four seasons with Cheshire from 1991-94 and was appointed a life member for services which brought 907 runs and 153 wickets. Saying how much he had enjoyed a career spanning more than 40 years, the Chesterfield man introduced a serious note when he praised the work being done in the game’s grass roots such as in Cheshire. ‘Our wonderful game’ must be maintained He said: “You good people here are what cricket is all about. You must help maintain our great sport in schools and clubs, through the Minor Counties and into the first-class game. I am told your clubs in Cheshire are helping young players graduate into county cricket, so you are obviously doing your bit.” Geoff Miller earned a standing ovation from an audience drawn from all clubs in the league except absentees Alvanley, Cheadle, Congleton and Middlewich.
