To facilitate this collaboration specialized tools are being integrated into development environments. Although these tools facilitate collaboration, they do not foster it. The problem is that the tools require the developers to maintain a list of other developers with whom they may wish to communicate. In any given situation, it is the developer who must determine who within this list has expertise for the specific situation. Unless the team is small and static, maintaining the knowledge about who is expert in particular parts of the system is difficult. As many organizations are beginning to use agile development and distributed software practices, which result in teams with dynamic membership, maintaining this knowledge is impossible. This thesis investigates whether emergent team structure can be used to support collaboration amongst software developers. The membership of an emergent team is determined from analysis of software artifacts. We first show that emergent teams exist within a particular open-source software project, the Eclipse integrated development environment. We then present a tool called Emergent Expertise Locator (EEL) that uses emergent team information to propose experts to a developer within their development environment as the developer works. We validated this approach to support collaboration by applying our ap• proach to historical data gathered from the Eclipse project, Firefox and Bugzilla and comparing the results to an existing heuristic for recommending experts that produces a list of experts based on the revision history of individual files. -

According to research conducted by Optaros, Inc., and InformationWeek magazine, 87 percent of the 512 companies surveyed use open source software, with companies earning over $1 billion in annual revenue saving an average of $3.3 million by using open source software in 2004.1 Open source is not just staying in computer rooms either-it is increasingly grabbing intellectual property headlines and entering mainstream news on issues like the following: i. Press release Leuven, Belgium, 8 November 2011 New and Revised Extensions for Accessible Document Creation with OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) today released an extension for OpenOffice.org Writer and LibreOffice Writer that enables users to evaluate and repair accessibility issues in word processing documents. “AccessODF” (http://sourceforge.net/p/accessodf/wiki/) is a freeware extension for OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice, two office suites that are freely available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux/Unix and Solaris. At the same time, K.U.Leuven also releases new versions of two other extensions: odt2daisy (http://odt2daisy.sourceforge.net/) and odt2braille (http://odt2braille.sourceforge.net/). The former enables users to export word processing documents to digital talking books in the DAISY format; the latter enables exporting to Braille and printing on a Braille embosser. AccessODF, odt2daisy and odt2braille are being developed in the framework of the AEGIS project, an R&D project funded by the European Commission. The three extensions will be demonstrated at the AEGIS project’s Workshop and Conference, which take place in Brussels on 28-30 November 2011 (http://aegis-conference.eu/). AccessODF AccessODF is an extension that can be used in OpenOffice.org Writer and in LibreOffice Writer. Web Page Design with Netscape 7.1 Walter Gajewski, Academic Computing Services Francine Vasilomanolakis, CSULB Dept. of Education STEP 1: Downloading Netscape 7.1 It is possible to lay out and publish a web page with Netscape Composer, a software application included with the Netscape (version 7.0) Web Browser (free from Netscape). To install Netscape (version 7.1) on your own computer go out to the Netscape web site http://www.netscape.com and click on “Netscape 7.1” located under “Tools” and often under “Dowloads of the Day”. From the “downloads” page you can either install Netscape directly to your personal computer or have them mail you their free CD-ROM. Once Netscape is installed on your computer, you’re ready to create your first web page. STEP 2: Getting a CSULB internet (email) account Before you start authoring your on-line masterpiece you will have to apply for a campus web account. CSULB students can create an email account by going to http://www.csulb.edu/namemaster/ You will now have a user name and password. STEP 3: Creating or Editing a Web Page Note: The index.html file is the Home Page in your web site. When others visit your web site, they will automatically be directed to your index.html file.
