Your field level is insufficient game! *Mumbles loudly about discouraging exploration.* E Yeah! e 1 r 16 D Advertisement Share this Post 1 Tweet 2 Share Embed Comment Matthew 12/17/2015 7:02 PM I went across a frozen lake full of level 50 enemies. I was having to be sneaky while my feet were cold! When I go out of my way to get a probe like that, I expect a reward! Not to be told I'm not good enough. *Grumbles even more.* E Yeah! e 1 D T3R3Z1 12/17/2015 8:45 PM The Mechanical Skill levels go up to 5. Eleonora won't even let you upgrade it that far. I kid you not. E Yeah! e 1 D Matthew 12/17/2015 8:47 PM Mine's three. E Yeah! e 0 D T3R3Z1 12/17/2015 8:52 PM Mine is 4, and that's as far as it goes for now, apparently. I have no idea how to get to 5. X'D E Yeah! e 0 D Matthew 12/17/2015 8:53 PM My friend Nintendoer has run into that issue, I think he found a probe is Cauldros that needed a Mechanical level 5 to use. This one right here is the highest I've found, though. E Yeah! e 0 D T3R3Z1 12/17/2015 8:57 PM Oh, I've seen several level 5s. The only frustrating part is not being able to take care of them right then and there. :'D E Yeah! e 0 D Matthew 12/17/2015 8:58 PM As seen above I get frustrated by it as well. E Yeah! e 0 D T3R3Z1 12/17/2015 9:11 PM So now I get to level up something useless, like a biological field skill. Great. :') E Yeah! e 0 D Matthew 12/17/2015 9:13 PM See I have this buitl in explore instinct. I jever have to explore for quests because I usually have already gone way farther than that. So when my exploration is slowed it makes me mad. E Yeah! e 0 D Nintendoer 12/17/2015 10:09 PM I've found probes like that in Primordia, Cauldros, and Oblivia so far. I, too, have no clue how to reach mechancal level 5, but I suspect it's a Skell upgrade later on. E Yeah! e 2 D Cardo 12/18/2015 10:37 AM ·Spoilers Whenever you get one of your field skills to level 4, keep checking the mission board for a mission called "Off the Record." There's a different version for each skill, and the objectives are given in the form of riddles. Completing the objectives will raise the appropriate field skill to level 5. E Yeah! e 0 D Nintendoer 12/18/2015 11:02 AM I assume your comment is telling me how to plant probes requiring Mechanical level 5. Just because I do not know, does not mean I want to be told. So I apologize, but I will refrain from reading your comment. I'll find the answer on my own merit. E Yeah♥ e 1 D Matthew 12/18/2015 1:03 PM I'm also assuming that Cardo's comment reveals the method, so although I'll try to find it on my own first it's there for those who would like to know. E Yeah! e 1 D T3R3Z1 12/18/2015 2:26 PM *read the comment* thank you kind sir for your much needed advice X'D E Yeah! e 0 D Cardo 12/18/2015 7:57 PM @T3R3Z1: You're very welcome! @Matthew & Nintendoer: You are correct, sirs. • Xenoblade Chronicles X Jump by BLADE a Little Over Two Years Ago
Xenoblade Chronicles X Jump By BLADE A little over two years ago, the Earth was destroyed in a clash between the Ganglion and the Ghost. Whether they were coming for humanity is unknown, but after the ark ships made their escape, the Ganglion began to hunt them down. One ship, the White Whale, containing the city of New Los Angeles, crash landed after an attack. The planet showed up out of nowhere. It wasn't on any sensors, it wasn’t within visible range. One minute it wasn’t there, and the next the White Whale was crashing into it. Welcome to the planet Mira. Afterwards, the humans began to rebuild. But, somehow the Ganglion arrived first? Regardless of time/space shenanigans, take these to help you get started. +1000 cp Origins Go ahead and pick one, they’re all free. Drop In Somewhat literally, what with falling out of the sky. This origin belongs to the humans, through whether you’ve been here all along, or got pulled out of a pod is up to you. Native Slightly misleading, but this origin belongs to the Nopon, the Manon, the Qlurians, and the Gaur. I suppose, rather than ‘Natives’, this origin consists of the races who refused to side with the Ganglion Renegades Compared to Natives, this one is completely literal. The Orpheans, the Delfinians, the Prone, the Wrothians, and the Zaruboggans, all the races that once sided with the ganglion, but will soon change their minds. Ganglion Evil is relative, but this origin consists of the Ganglion, and the handful of races that still remained loyal to them.

  • Nintendo's Leak
Rumor: Smash Bros. roster leaks; you can finally shoot the Duck Hunt dog Convincing video footage shows Bowser Jr., Xenoblade protagonist as new fighters. Sam Machkovech - 8/25/2014, 2:29 PM NeoGAF The next entries in the Super Smash Bros. fighting franchise, a 3DS/Wii U duo with separate (and partly unknown) release dates, has seen its roster of fan-favorite characters expand in drips of one or two character announcements at a time for years now. That promotional slow-drip may have finally run out, however, thanks to a mix of questionable screenshots and convincing video footage that surfaced on enthusiast forum NeoGAF in recent days. The videos, which were uploaded [and promptly deleted by way of Nintendo copyright claim] on Monday and focused on the 3DS edition of the next Smash Bros., contained appearances from previously unannounced characters Bowser Jr.—piloting the flying clown-face pod that first appeared in Super Mario World—and Shulk, the spiky-haired, JRPG-cliche protagonist from the Nintendo-published Xenoblade Chronicles. These videos appeared to confirm leaked information that surfaced as early as last Wednesday, including a full roster screenshot that contained, among other characters, the dog from NES classic Duck Hunt. If true, this would be the first time the annoying, laughing pooch would be directly controllable in a Nintendo game, though you could actually shoot the mongrel in his grinning face if you tracked down a Vs. Duck Hunt arcade machine. That supposed full-character roster screenshot also included returning Smash faves like Earthbound protagonist Ness, classic Nintendo mascot R.O.B., and Star Fox sidekick Falco.

  • Mukokuseki and the Narrative Mechanics in Japanese Games
Mukokuseki and the Narrative Mechanics in Japanese Games Hiloko Kato and René Bauer “In fact the whole of Japan is a pure invention. There is no such country, there are no such peo- ple.”1 “I do realize there’s a cultural difference be- tween what Japanese people think and what the rest of the world thinks.”2 “I just want the same damn game Japan gets to play, translated into English!”3 Space Invaders, Frogger, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Sonic The Hedgehog, Pokémon, Harvest Moon, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda, Katamari, Okami, Hatoful Boyfriend, Dark Souls, The Last Guardian, Sekiro. As this very small collection shows, Japanese arcade and video games cover the whole range of possible design and gameplay styles and define a unique way of narrating stories. Many titles are very successful and renowned, but even though they are an integral part of Western gaming culture, they still retain a certain otherness. This article explores the uniqueness of video games made in Japan in terms of their narrative mechanics. For this purpose, we will draw on a strategy which defines Japanese culture: mukokuseki (borderless, without a nation) is a concept that can be interpreted either as Japanese commod- ities erasing all cultural characteristics (“Mario does not invoke the image of Ja- 1 Wilde (2007 [1891]: 493). 2 Takahashi Tetsuya (Monolith Soft CEO) in Schreier (2017). 3 Funtime Happysnacks in Brian (@NE_Brian) (2017), our emphasis. 114 | Hiloko Kato and René Bauer pan” [Iwabuchi 2002: 94])4, or as a special way of mixing together elements of cultural origins, creating something that is new, but also hybrid and even ambig- uous.

  • A Survey of Japanese Video Game Localization Methods and Challenges
“Eat Your Hamburgers, Apollo”: A Survey of Japanese Video Game Localization Methods and Challenges By Derek Heemsbergen During the process of video game “localization,” text and audiovisual material is translated and recontextualized for a foreign audience. This article analyzes the localization process, beginning with a brief history of the video game and its current position in the global digital entertainment indus- try, before moving on to a discussion of the overarching idea behind localization. The various textual typologies (or text styles/genres) of video games are explored, followed by an exploration of several approaches to the localization process, including literal translation, “transcreation,” and “blending,” among other elements. The article then narrows its focus with a discussion of challenges that are specific to Japanese-to-English localization, including difficulties with cultural contexts, acceptability contexts, and orthographical character limits in game code. It concludes with a brief discussion of the best practices for game localization moving forward. Beginning with the 1972 debut of the first home video game console,1 computer games have become a cornerstone of the global digital entertainment industry. Thanks to advancements in online technology and the ubiquity of smartphones, video games are enjoyed by more than 1.2 billion people worldwide — 17 percent of the world’s population.2 Shattered is the once-popular notion that games are nothing more than a series of bits and beeps held together by a few lines of code. More people are gaming than ever, and games themselves have expanded to encompass a wide variety of genres, styles, and experiences. Modern game development is a progressively extravagant venture; so-called “AAA” game studios have production budgets that rival major film studios, the most expensive to date hovering around $250 million including marketing costs.3 The global game industry 4 was projected to reach $70 billion in revenue by 2015.
