    Partnership: the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research, vol. 7, no. 1 (2012) The Sea Stacks Project: Enhancing the Use of Regional Literature in Atlantic Canadian Schools Vivian Howard Associate Professor/Associate Dean (Academic) School of Information Management Dalhousie University [email protected] Abstract Research over the past two decades has amply demonstrated the importance of literature to the formation of both regional and national cultural identity, particularly in the face of mass market globalization of children's book publishing in the 21st century as well as the predominance of non-Canadian content from television, movies, books, magazines and internet media. However, Canadian children appear to have only very limited exposure to Canadian authors and illustrators. In Atlantic Canada, regional Atlantic Canadian authors and illustrators for children receive very limited critical attention, and resources for the study and teaching of Atlantic Canadian children's literature are few. Print and digital information sources on regional children's books, publishing, authors and illustrators are scattered and inconsistent in quality and currency. This research project directly addresses these key concerns by summarizing the findings of a survey of Atlantic Canadian teachers on their use of regional books. In response to survey findings, the paper concludes by describing the creation of the Sea Stacks Project: an authoritative, web-delivered information resource devoted to contemporary Atlantic Canadian literature for children and teens.     JOURNAL OF TEACHING AND LEARNING, 2005, VOL. 3, NO. 2 “No text is innocent”: Canadian children’s books in the classroom Joyce Bainbridge, Dianne Oberg and Mike Carbonaro University of Alberta Abstract This case study of one school district explored elementary teachers’ use of, and beliefs about, Canadian children’s books in the classroom. It also examined the supports that facilitate elementary teachers’ use of Canadian books, including services provided by teacher-librarians, school district personnel and others; availability of funding; and opportunities for professional development. The case study district had a teacher-librarian in every school and was committed to supporting the work of teachers through the school library. The participants had clear ideas about what it meant to them to be Canadian and about the values that were important to them as Canadians. They believed it was important to incorporate Canadian books into classroom activities. However, they often felt a need to justify their use of Canadian books, whereas they unquestioningly used American books in their teaching across the curriculum. Overall, they were more knowledgeable about Canadian books and Canadian authors and illustrators than teachers in earlier studies. However, the findings of the study raise an interesting paradox; the teachers supported the use of Canadian books but they did not appear to connect “Canadian values” to Canadian books. They seemed unaware that all books, Canadian or not, convey an ideology; “no text is innocent” (Stephens & Watson, 1994, p. 14). “No text is innocent”: Canadian children’s books in the classroom Books for children, as Nodelman (1999) writes, are often dismissed simply as texts for the nursery or the elementary classroom.

We just completed our Safety Week which included many important activities, such Halloween 3 as practising fire drills and emergency preparedness for a Lockdown. Staff reviewed Remind Children to be Safe 3 many safety topics including managing anaphylaxis, responsibilities for fire safety, Twoonies for Terry 3 Boomerang Lunches 3 and general health and safety practices. The students and staff will practice bus safety with bus company representatives later this month. Bill Crothers Information Congratulations to our school community for a very successful Terry Fox Night for Grade 8 Parents 4 event. Phoebe Gilman displayed terrific school spirit in continuing Terry’s vision Boys and Girls Club 4 for cancer research. Our campaign will raise approximately $1400 for the Terry Fox Walking to School Safely 4 Foundation. We will be reminding students to put on their jackets and sweaters as we head out- side for recess these days.     Client 9: Spitzer and Hypocrisy Author Justin Eckstein University of Denver [email protected] Newspapers, magazines, and other publications called him “the steamroller,” “the sheriff of Wall Street,” “the enforcer,” “Mr. Clean,” and “the Crusader.” More recently there is a new name for former Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer: a “John.” Indeed, Spitzer became one of many politicians implicated in a sex scandal. From Bill Clinton and Clarence Thomas to Larry Craig and Mark Sanford, sex scandals have become part of our politics. One would assume the sheer repetition of sex scandals would desensitize the public to politicians’ tom- foolery; however, Spitzer’s experience and subsequent resignation, and the many like it that have followed demonstrate that sex scandals still incite a reaction. The nature of that reaction is hard to determine because the public does not uniformly make the same accusations. Unlike Spitzer, Clinton, Thomas, and Sanford all survived their sex scandals and managed to retain power. What was so special about this particular John? What was unique about the constellation of rhetorical and political forces that led to his resignation? Amongst all the other political survival stories, why was Spitzer compelled to leave office? I believe the answer to these questions resides in the arguments levied by the press. The Times sums up the arguments best, “Mr Spitzer’s chief crime was hypocrisy. If anyone ever needs a clear-cut example of this failing, Mr Spitzer provides it.”1 The Times represents just one voice in the chorus calling for Spitzer’s resignation. Charges came from myriad publications that named Spitzer a hypocrite.

    The Alberta Journal of Educational Research Vol. 51, No. 4, Winter 2005, 311-327 Joyce Bainbridge Mike Carbonaro and Nicole Green University of Alberta Canadian Children’s Literature: An Alberta Survey This article presents the findings of an online survey administered to Alberta elementary school teachers in 2000-2001. The survey explored the teachers’ knowledge and use of Canadian children’s literature and their thoughts about the role of Canadian literature in elementary school classrooms. Canadian children’s trade books espouse particular images and values that assist young Canadians in developing a sense of their national and personal identities. Respondents expressed their thoughts about the advantages and disadvantages of using Canadian literature. Overall, most teachers appeared to be unfamiliar with contemporary Canadian books and included Canadian materials in their classroom instruction only for specific Canadian content. Cet article présente les résultats d’une enquête en ligne effectuée auprès d’enseignants à l’élémentaire en Alberta, en 2000-2001. L’enquête portait sur les connaissances des enseignants au sujet de la littérature canadienne pour jeunes, l’usage qu’ils en faisaient et leurs avis sur le rôle de la littérature canadienne à l’élémentaire. Les ouvrages canadiens d’intérêt général publiés pour les jeunes transmettent des images et des valeurs qui aident les jeunes Canadiens à se développer une identité nationale et personnelle. Les répondants se sont exprimés sur les bienfaits et les désavantages d’employer la littérature canadienne. De façon générale, la majorité des enseignants semblent ne pas bien connaître les livres canadiens contemporains et n’avaient recours à la littérature canadienne que pour son contenu spécifiquement canadien.

    Balancing Early Days of Motherhood and Academia During COVID-19 Antistasis, 10(3) Balancing Early Days of Motherhood and Academia During COVID-19: Creative Writing Communities of Practice Christine Helen Arnold Memorial University of Newfoundland Introduction There has been an increased focus on female academics during the COVID-19 pandemic, as researchers have been investigating the disproportionate impacts of the lockdown on participation and productivity in the workplace (Cui, Ding, & Zhu, 2020). Participation and productivity are primarily being studied according to funding applications and awards, manuscript submissions, and publications, among others (Cui, Ding, & Zhu, 2020; Fazackerley, 2020; Flaherty, 2020; Frederickson, 2020; Malisch et al. 2020; Shurchcov, 2020; Viglione, 2020). These results control for several factors and examine the variables compared to male counterparts’ research outcomes, as well as females’ research outcomes compared to themselves in the months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the same time the previous academic year. Numerous open-access repositories and preprint server platforms have been reviewed and reveal the following narratives: • Female academics are involved in increased childcare and household responsibilities relative to their male counterparts; • Female academics’ working papers/preprints are not growing as quickly relative to their male counterparts; • Female academics’ publishing rates have fallen relative to their male counterparts; and • Female academics’ solo-authored submissions have declined relative to their male counterparts (Buckee, et al., 2020; Cui, Ding, & Zhu, 2020; Fazackerley, 2020; Flaherty, 2020; Frederickson, 2020; Malisch et al., 2020). While most analyses are preliminary and are presented within various post-secondary education media sources and magazines (Fazackerley, 2020; Flaherty, 2020; Frederickson, 2020), there are informative working paper and preprint series that are permitting empirically-driven discussions (Cui, Ding, & Zhu, 2020).
