In the quest for wholeness and healing in Pentecostal spirituality, the methodology of a literature study and hermeneutical approach was employed in this study. To determine whether Pentecostal spirituality is contributing to healing and wholeness, Chapter 2 explored the doctrinal component in Pentecostal spirituality by looking at specific themes, such as doctrine, experience, epistemology, and the cognitive component (which included a reflection on theodicy, paradigms, and schemata of interpretation), as well as the doctrine of healing from a Pentecostal perspective. Chapter 3 explored the anthropological component in Pentecostal spirituality, by reflecting on a number of key themes, namely: the notion of cura animarum (in the quest for the care and cure of the human soul); theory formation; the influence of paradigms on anthropology, and the Pentecostal view of human personhood (trichotomy). In the quest for wholeness and healing, and working towards an integrative approach to pastoral caregiving, Chapter 4 explored a number of key themes, namely: health, wholeness, and an integrative and holistic approach to pastoral caregiving. Chapter 5 provided a brief summary/outline of the main focus of each chapter, a presentation of the key research findings, the limitations of the study, a recommendation for further research, and a final conclusion. It was found that healing encompasses much more than just physical healing and extends to various other dimensions of the human person, including the cognitive, conative, affective, as well as physical, environmental, and spiritual dimensions. Wholeness is for the ‘whole person’ and includes the cognitive, conative and affective, physical and spiritual anthropological dimensions. It also has a relational (interpersonal and intrapersonal) and ecological (cosmos) component. For Pentecostals, it is God’s will that we be made whole in every dimension of our being. This holistic approach to pastoral care is compatible with Pentecostal spirituality and seeks wholeness in each of the anthropological dimensions of the human person, but it was also further extended to include cura vitae (the healing of life itself) and cura terrae (the healing of land) (Louw, 2015), reflecting a broader focus and view. The aim of this study is to ensure that the spiritual, psychological, social, physical and anthropological needs of the human person are attended to holistically. The envisaged outcome is healing of the ‘whole person’ — which will lead to an improved quality of life. The implication of this study is for academics, theologians, and pastoral caregivers to move beyond negative stereotypes and unfair biased criticisms, and begin to take Pentecostal spirituality, and all that it has to offer, more seriously and to recognize the positive contribution that Pentecostal spirituality has had on people’s lives in terms of fostering healing, wholeness, and overall well-being. iii Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Die studie het ondersoek ingestel of Pinkster spiritualiteit bydra tot genesing en heelheid in pastorale versorging, en of dit ‘n hindernis vir genesing is. In die soeke na heelheid en genesing in Pinkster spiritualiteit was die metodologie van 'n literatuurstudie en hermeneutiese benadering in hierdie studie aangewend. Om vas te stel of Pinkster spiritualiteit bydra tot genesing en heeligheid, het Hoofstuk 2 die leerstellige komponent in Pinkster spiritualiteit ondersoek deur spesifieke temas te ondersoek, soos leer, ervaring, epistemologie en die kognitiewe komponent (wat 'n refleksie oor dieododie, paradigmas en skemata van interpretasie), sowel as die leerstuk van genesing vanuit 'n Pinkster-perspektief. Hoofstuk 3 het die antropologiese komponent in Pinkster spiritualiteit ondersoek, deur te besin oor 'n aantal sleutel temas, naamlik: die idee van cura animarum (in die soeke na die versorging en genesing van die menslike siel); teorie vorming; die invloed van paradigmas op antropologie en die Pinkster se siening van menslike persoonlikheid (trichotomie). In die soeke na heelheid en genesing, en in die rigting van 'n integrerende benadering tot pastorale versorging, het hoofstuk 4 'n aantal sleutel temas ondersoek, naamlik: gesondheid, heelheid, en 'n integrerende en holistiese benadering tot pastorale versorging. Hoofstuk 5 het 'n kort opsomming van die hooffokus van elke hoofstuk gegee, 'n voorlegging van die sleutelnavorsingsbevindings, die beperkinge van die studie, 'n aanbeveling vir verdere navorsing en 'n finale gevolgtrekking. Daar is bevind dat genesing veel meer as net fisiese genesing behels, en strek tot verskeie ander dimensies van die menslike persoon, insluitend die kognitiewe, konatiewe, affektiewe, sowel as fisiese, omgewings- en geestelike dimensies. Heelheid is vir die 'hele mens' en sluit die kognitiewe, konatiewe en affektiewe, fisiese en geestelike antropologiese dimensies in. Dit het ook 'n relasionele (interpersoonlike en intrapersoonlike) en ekologiese (kosmos) komponent. Vir Pinksterlinge, is dit God se wil dat ons in elke dimensie van ons wese geheel word. Hierdie holistiese benadering tot pastorale sorg is verenigbaar met Pinkster spiritualiteit en soek heelheid in elk van die antropologiese dimensies van die menslike mens, maar dit is ook uitgebrei om cura vitae (die genesing van die lewe self) en cura terrae (die genesing van land) (Louw, 2015), wat 'n breër fokus en siening weerspieël. Die doel van hierdie studie is om te verseker dat die geestelike, psigologiese, sosiale, fisiese en antropologiese behoeftes van die mens holisties nagesien word. I argue that the revivals rely on religious elites summoning collective memory to restore religion, among other factors. In addition, a micro-level perspective is taken, to see how collective memory, more than a group’s collective representation, is the product and resources of religious elites in pursuit of their own interest; the remembrance of the sacred past is a contested, unfolding process of key actors engaging in varied mnemonic practices. Through data collected from long-term fieldwork, I demonstrate how Chinese Pentecostals, after lengthy political suppression, use religious collective memory to rebuild the national community, strengthen the leadership by proving their orthodox character, and fight against mystical separatists. In conclusion, I explain why religious collective memory matters in the case of China in particular, where the state tends to repress religious institutionalization, and Chinese people emphasize the importance of orthodoxy lineage.     Autumn Newsletter October 2006 Anne Maddocks (1911 – 2006) Anne Maddocks, who has died aged 94, was a prominent cathedral organist and an outstanding bishop's wife who gave the first British performance of Poulenc's Organ Concerto in Chichester Cathedral in 1943. After her marriage to Morris Maddocks she adapted well to the role of clergy wife, supporting him as he rose through the hierarchy to become Bishop of Selby. In due course they set up the Acorn Christian Healing Trust, focusing on the healing and reconciliation ministry of the Church. As an off-shoot of that, Anne set up Acorn Christian Listeners, helping people to listen to each other and to God. She was born Nellie Anne Sheail in Heyshott, West Sussex, on October 23 1911, an only child. Her father was the manager of Bignor Park Farm and her mother looked after the house when its owner, Lord Mersey, was away. Both parents were enthusiastic violinists, and by the age of 14 Anne was playing the organ for services at two village churches. She took up folk dancing at the age of 16, leading a village team that won first the Sussex championship and later the national championship at the Royal Albert Hall. In 1938, determined to learn more – and to learn it from the best possible teachers, Anne Maddocks travelled on the bus to Chichester. There, unannounced, she knocked on the cathedral organist's door and asked for lessons. Soon afterwards Horace Hawkins, a pupil of Charles Widor, became director of music at the Cathedral and took her under his wing.

Tiedemann We have taken for granted an obscure history of Pentecostalism for so long that the multitudes of nameless people responsible for its grassroots expansion have passed into history unremembered and their memory is now very difficult to retrieve. Allan Anderson1 The Pentecostal movement owes its inspiration and formation to the emergence of radical evangelical currents during the second half of the nineteenth century. These new religious movements were significantly different in their eschatological expectations and missionary methods and began to severely challenge mainstream Protestantism in Europe and North America. Several innovative theological currents had a decisive influence on the formation of a host of new denominations and new missionary bodies. This paper attempts to illustrate the role that the Bible played in the development of the True Jesus Church (TJC for short) and how its biblical interpretations functioned in the shaping of its exclusive identity based on certain aspects of its charismatic experiences and unique doctrinal system. The founding of the TJC relied upon charismatic experiences, which were regarded as the work of the Holy Spirit to prove the authority of the Church. Doctrinally, the approaches to biblical interpretation employed by TJC leaders were another source of the church’s unique identity: The exclusive status the church assigned to itself was evident in its distinct interpretive approaches, as well as in its innovative rituals, especially facedown immersion baptism. Along with various influences of the Pentecostal tradition and the Chinese social context, these hermeneutics were an important reason for the TJC’s development as an independent denomination in the Republican era. SMITH Christianity With Chinese Characteristics: The Origins and Evolution of Adventist Mission in a Chinese Province The Seventh-day Adventist Church in China is organized as the Chi- nese Union Mission and forms part of the Northern Asia-Pacific Division, which also includes the Japan Union, the Korean Union, and the Mongo- lian Mission Field. The Chinese Union has 1,150 churches and a member- ship of 380,295 members according to the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook of 2010. The Chinese Union, in its current form, was first organized in 1949 and reorganized with the East Asian Association to form the Chinese Union Mission in 1999 (2010:239). The Adventist mission in China is a story that is yet to be fully told. Un- til recently, Western or Chinese scholars have not been interested in how the church has indigenized or localized to suit Chinese needs. The pur- pose of this study is to trace the origins and the evolution of Adventism in China, particularly in the southern region of the country, showing how Chinese Adventists indigenized their faith to make it more suitable to the Chinese context without necessarily compromising it. It also highlights the strategy of local Adventists in carrying out their mission within the context of a totalitarian state. Perhaps this study may increase our under- standing of how Christian missions can be more successful in totalitarian regimes in other parts of the world. Early Adventists had little concept of mission and were in fact anti- mission due to their peculiar theology of the Shut Door.
