C. van der Kooi WOORD VOORAF Jaren geleden heb ik mijn theologische studie aan de theologische faculteit van de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam voorlopig afgesloten met een exegetische scriptie over de uitzendingsrede van Jezus tot zijn leerlingen zoals weergegeven in Lukas 10. In deze rede krijgen (tweeën)zeventig leerlingen de opdracht te genezen en de nabijheid van het Koninkrijk van God te verkondigen. “Ieder mens heeft uiteindelijk maar één levensthema”, heb ik eens gelezen. Wellicht dat deze uitspraak enige nuancering behoeft, feit is wel dat het thema ‘genezing’ in de context van het christelijk geloof steeds mijn belangstelling is blijven houden. In de eerste gemeente, waaraan ik als pastoraal werker verbonden was, werd een ernstig zieke jonge vrouw na voorbede en zalving aan het leven teruggegeven, hetgeen een onuitwisbare indruk heeft gemaakt op haar familie en op de gemeente, evenals op mijzelf. Toen ik vervolgens als predikant verbonden werd aan een verpleeghuis, kwamen de thema’s van ziekte en lijden in geconcentreerde vorm op mij af. De mogelijkheid tot het ontvangen van een ‘ziekenzegen’, die ik daar introduceerde tijdens de zondagse diensten van de verpleeghuis- gemeenschap, waren een poging om het lijden van de aanwezigen vanuit christelijk perspectief te verlichten. In een volgende betrekking werd ik, naast het werk in een gemeente, als deeltijdpastor verbonden aan een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis, met zijn specifieke spanningsveld van vaak intens psychisch lijden en behoefte aan heling en geborgenheid. Mijn huidige werkkring, een gemeente met relatief veel ouderen, brengt me nog steeds regelmatig in instellingen van gezondheidszorg. De dienst der genezing krijgt in mijn ‘pastorale praktijk’ vandaag de dag voornamelijk vorm binnen een eenvoudige liturgische context, thuis, in de kerk of in een zorginstelling. In dit proefschrift heb ik hierboven geschetste lijnen uit mijn leven samengebracht en het ‘Leitmotiv’ van de genezing betrokken op het pastoraat in Nederlandse zorginstellingen. Daarmee is een in ons land unieke ‘kruisbestuiving’ voorwerp van studie geworden, met alle mogelijkheden en moeilijkheden die deze combinatie met zich meebrengt. Ik ben degenen dankbaar die mij op de weg naar het voltooien van deze studie hebben bijgestaan. In de eerste plaats dank ik mijn promotor, prof. dr. M.F.G. Parmentier, die mij steeds begeleid heeft en mij op het spoor heeft gezet van het Engelse ziekenhuis Burrswood, waar ik onderzoek heb gedaan, en van het leven van zijn stichtster, Dorothy Kerin. Mijn dank geldt evenzeer mijn co-promotor, prof. dr. C. van der Kooi, die -in een latere fase op intensieve wijze bij mijn studie betrokken- heeft bijgedragen aan vele 5 zinvolle verbeteringen. Prof. dr. H.C. Stoffels dank ik voor de begeleiding van het praktische onderzoek en voor het meedenken bij de wording van dit boek in een eerdere fase. Ik dank voorts prof. dr. E.     Autumn Newsletter October 2006 Anne Maddocks (1911 – 2006) Anne Maddocks, who has died aged 94, was a prominent cathedral organist and an outstanding bishop's wife who gave the first British performance of Poulenc's Organ Concerto in Chichester Cathedral in 1943. After her marriage to Morris Maddocks she adapted well to the role of clergy wife, supporting him as he rose through the hierarchy to become Bishop of Selby. In due course they set up the Acorn Christian Healing Trust, focusing on the healing and reconciliation ministry of the Church. As an off-shoot of that, Anne set up Acorn Christian Listeners, helping people to listen to each other and to God. She was born Nellie Anne Sheail in Heyshott, West Sussex, on October 23 1911, an only child. Her father was the manager of Bignor Park Farm and her mother looked after the house when its owner, Lord Mersey, was away. Both parents were enthusiastic violinists, and by the age of 14 Anne was playing the organ for services at two village churches. She took up folk dancing at the age of 16, leading a village team that won first the Sussex championship and later the national championship at the Royal Albert Hall. In 1938, determined to learn more – and to learn it from the best possible teachers, Anne Maddocks travelled on the bus to Chichester. There, unannounced, she knocked on the cathedral organist's door and asked for lessons. Soon afterwards Horace Hawkins, a pupil of Charles Widor, became director of music at the Cathedral and took her under his wing.

It replaces the previous guidelines published in 2002. The names of the Advisors are available in the York Diocesan Handbook, and the Chair of the group is the Bishop of Hull.     Dumitrescu: A Historical Survey of Healing and Exorcism CRISTIAN DUMITRESCU A Historical Survey of Healing and Exorcism Preamble The attempt to describe the historical developments regarding spiri- tual warfare in one short paper presents serious challenges. The time span to be covered is at least two thousand years if limited to the Christian church. The second challenge is the varied assumptions and hermeneu- tics with which different historians read events. Denominational stance and theological backgrounds decide a priori if belief in healing or deliver- ance is possible. Roman Catholics have been for millennia supporters of the miraculous. Protestants, who initially rejected the reality of miracles seem today to be divided on the topic. Some historical documents contain scarce information that can be interpreted according to one’s prior belief. Spiritual warfare is not a new term for missiological studies. As defined by Scott Moreau, spiritual warfare “encompasses Satan’s rebellion against God and the manifestations of that rebellion in the created order” (in Corrie 2007:369). It is an ongoing conflict and war manifested in the creation on planet earth. Its most extreme aspects are the battle against different forms of deadly diseases, often referred to as miraculous healing, and against demonic confrontation through deliverance or exorcism. Not all diseases are caused by demonic forces, and not all problems in life are spiritual warfare. Since the Bible describes the fundamentals of spiritual warfare but does not prescribe a certain way to approach it, there is a continuous need to assess the modus operandi of satanic forces. No historical period or particular culture is exempted from demonic influence, but Satan’s forces manifest themselves contextually to best fulfill their purposes.

In the quest for wholeness and healing in Pentecostal spirituality, the methodology of a literature study and hermeneutical approach was employed in this study. To determine whether Pentecostal spirituality is contributing to healing and wholeness, Chapter 2 explored the doctrinal component in Pentecostal spirituality by looking at specific themes, such as doctrine, experience, epistemology, and the cognitive component (which included a reflection on theodicy, paradigms, and schemata of interpretation), as well as the doctrine of healing from a Pentecostal perspective. Chapter 3 explored the anthropological component in Pentecostal spirituality, by reflecting on a number of key themes, namely: the notion of cura animarum (in the quest for the care and cure of the human soul); theory formation; the influence of paradigms on anthropology, and the Pentecostal view of human personhood (trichotomy).
