WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION The Provost welcomed Michael Keane, the Council's new Head of Planning and Economic Development to his first Council meeting. PROVOST’S REMARKS 1. The Provost began his remarks by referring to the tremendous evening held on 16 April at Grange Academy, where tribute had been paid to community groups and individuals from across East Ayrshire at the Community Planning Partnership Awards 2015. The Provost advised that a lovely night had been had by all, celebrating those who made a positive contribution to their community and that the winners of the awards had all been very worthy recipients. The Provost then expressed his delight at having attended the PEACE Music of Hope and Remembrance Spring Charity Concert on 22 April in the Grand Hall, Kilmarnock which had been organised to raise funds for SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Families Association). The Provost stated that it had been a pleasure to give thanks to Kilmarnock and District Choral Union at the conclusion of the concert for them supporting SSAFA. The Provost then advised that he had been thrilled to see the Stewarton team take the top honour at the YES Ayrshire Awards held on Thursday 23 April at the Marine Hotel in Troon with prizes also being received by Doon, Belmont and James Hamilton 2 Academies. The Provost further advised that the Go Co, which had been established and operated by a team of senior pupils at Stewarton Academy, had been named overall winner with their bag business, also receiving recognition for Best Marketing, Best Report and Best Presentation. The Provost went on to say that a hat trick of awards had also gone to Doon Academy's Flawless, whose educational flashcard business had been recognised for Best Product/Service, Best Teamwork and Best Innovation. The Provost then stated that two further trophies had gone to Kilmarnock's James Hamilton Academy, with their bespoke decorations company, Aspire, taking the Best Interview category, whilst the school's Lorraine Egerton had been named Best Link Teacher. The Provost further stated that the awards had been the culmination of months of hard work by each of the teams with each creating, financing, launching and operating their own business, supported by Link Teachers and by volunteer business advisors from the local community. The Provost advised that overall Ayrshire winners, Stewarton's The Go Co, would now go on to represent Ayrshire at Young Enterprise, Scotland's national finals in Glasgow. The Provost then stated that it had been a privilege to visit Alison McCann, aged 14 from Dalmellington, at Doon Academy on Friday 24 April. The Provost advised that Alison had become the first Scottish scout in 45 years to be given one of the movement's highest awards, receiving the Cornwell Badge. The Provost stated that the badge was given in recognition of courage and endurance under extreme conditions and that Alison had excelled as a patrol leader and continued to influence follow Scouts. The Provost then advised that the badge was created in memory of a boy sailor and scout, Jack Cornwell, who had been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross after he had been mortally wounded at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The Provost then advised of the brilliant news for Kilmarnock photography entrants to the Scottish Civic Trust My Place Photography Awards as photographers from four primary schools (Annanhill, Gargieston, Hillhead and Silverwood) and one secondary School (Grange Academy) had all had their work exhibited by the Trust, at the prestigious Lighthouse - Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture, in Glasgow. The Provost further advised that their achievement was all the more remarkable as the Trust had received almost 500 entries this year, from 32 schools across Scotland, with primary pupil Max Halliday (Annanhill Primary) receiving a Highly Commended Award and David Klein (Gargieston Primary), a Commended Award. The Provost stated that in recognition of this, East Ayrshire Council had arranged for all the pupils' work to be exhibited at the Young People's Gallery at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock until Saturday 13 June 2015 and for Max and David to be rewarded for their fantastic results. The Provost then referred to the Cumnock Citizen of the Year for 2014, Moureen Jones, who had spent a career in nursing, eventually retiring in the position of Matron. The Provost advised that Moureen had been responsible for the decommissioning of Ballochmyle Hospital and it was while carrying out these duties approximately 20 years ago that she had first come into contact with "Glasgow the Caring City" who collect clothing, amongst other things, to send to countries throughout the world where disasters occur. The Provost stated that Moureen also meets regularly with an MS Group in Kilmarnock where she uses her nursing experience and carries out home visits on their behalf when required and is also very active in Cumnock Old Church, helping others. The Provost invited Council to join him in congratulating Moureen on receiving this award which was very well deserved for her, being such a caring individual. 3 The Provost then expressed his delight in joining Crosshouse Bowling Club Ladies Section to celebrate their 60th Anniversary on 25 April. The Provost advised that the Ladies Opening Day had seen invited guests from other bowling clubs along with officials from the Scottish Bowling Association and the Ayrshire Bowling Association join them for a fun day which had included a game of bowls followed by a meal and entertainment. The Provost then went on to advise that he had been invited by the Consul General of the Republic of Poland, Mr Dariusz Adler, to a programme of Musical Colour of the Region of Chopin with a piano recital by Pawet Wakarecy on 27 April at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh to celebrate Polish National Day. The Provost stated that it had been a very cultured evening, the recital being followed by a reception with a hot buffet of traditional Polish dishes served in the City Chambers; and that he had invited the Consul General to visit East Ayrshire in order to return the hospitality and show him the attractions in East Ayrshire. The Provost then mentioned another array of lovely machinery which had been on display this year at the Classic Car Show on 10 May at St Joseph's Campus where he had the pleasure of opening the event and presenting prizes to the winners at the conclusion. Finally, the Provost referred to further achievements for Stewarton as Stewarton Academy's Senior Wind Ensemble had struck gold at the National Finals of the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF) recently. The Provost advised that the NCBF had taken place at the Royal Northern college of Music in Manchester earlier this month. The Provost stated that Stewarton had represented East Ayrshire, and Scotland, at the competition after winning a rare Platinum Award with an outstanding performance at the NCBF regional final in Edinburgh late last year. The Provost then stated that the Senior Wind Ensemble hadn't disappointed at the National Finals, wowing the judges with a 15 minute performance of 3 songs, receiving a Gold Award for their mature and thoughtful performance. The Provost advised that the Stewarton band's next performances would be at the Annual SBSG Summer Concert which would take place in the Grand Hall, Kilmarnock on Saturday 30 May 2015 at 7pm. Councillors Cook and McKay: Alan Brown MP Councillor Cook on behalf of the Conservative and Unionist Group offered his congratulations to Councillor Alan Brown on his election as MP for the Kilmarnock and Loudoun Constituency. Councillor Maureen McKay on behalf of the Labour Opposition Party offered her congratulations to Councillor Reid and his party on the considerable achievement made by his party nationally at the UK Parliamentary Election and also congratulated Councillor Alan Brown on his election as MP for the Kilmarnock and Loudoun Constituency. Councillor Reid: Cathy Jamieson Councillor Douglas Reid responded by thanking Councillors Cook and McKay for their kind comments and added his own congratulations to Councillor Alan Brown. Councillor Reid also intimated his congratulations to Councillor Corri Wilson of South Ayrshire Council on her election as MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock Constituency and also his thanks to Sandra Osborne, former MP for that Constituency for her work. 4 Councillor Reid advised that he specifically wanted to place on record his thanks to Cathy Jamieson, former MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun Constituency for her dedication, commitment and good work she had done on behalf of the constituency and East Ayrshire in general over the years.
