SPORTS

It is January here in Maine (and most other places, too, we suspect) and the snow storms have made the old-timers scratch their heads and wheeze, “Gosh, jest like when I wuza kid.” And January brings more than snow; it also brings the indoor track season. Maine opened its season with an impressive win over Bates last week-end and many a Sigma Chi plaved an important part. Dick Dow and Carlton MacLean, tie-babies of the cross country team this fall (they finished in a hand-in-hand tie for first place in five consecutive meets), got off to a good start last week-end. They tied for first in the two-mile run. Dow is a Senior who holds the state outdoor two-mile record and the Maine state record in cross country. Dick has been a consistent winner for Coach Jenkins’ track squads for three years. MacLean is a long, lankv Sophomore who has already estab lished himself as a man of authority in the distance runs. He has two more years of eligibility. Other stellar performers last week-end included Pres Johnson, Maine’s ace hammer thrower who took a first (Pres was beaten just once last year); George Weatherbee. who took a first in the pole-vault; Bruce Clifford, third in the discus: Bill Donnell, third in the hammer; Fred Dolan, a third in the broad jump. night: old grads met young grads, young grads met actives and pledges, actives and pledges met old grads, and that is the way it went far into the night. The next day was one that the University of Maine will never for get. About 12,000 alumni and stu dents jammed the stands around Alumni Field to watch Maine wallop Bowdoin, 40-12. It was the win that Maine had been after for sixty years; it was the win that gave Maine the State Championship (they had HOMECOMING cinched the Yankee Conference title Our Rho Rho campaign to our earlier); it was the win that gave Alumni of last summer and early Maine its first undefeated football fall (THIS IS THE YEAR OF season in the history of the school. Rho Rho continued its policy of sending as many representatives as possible to the Leadership Work shop. Last summer we sent three: Prexy Dick Dow, Magester Bob Bruns, and Quaester Earl Stevens. As usual the boys reported that it was a very rewarding experience especially Bob Bruns. We changed our pledge policy last spring to closer resemble that which is sug gested by the National. Magester Bob picked up a lot of good ap plicable information and sugges tions at the Workshop. Probably this has been the most pinning and marrying year that Rho Rho has experienced in a Carl Wight dog’s age. Seems that about half the Brothers got the same idea at the same time. The most recent marriage was the Fogler-Pray nup tials this winter. On November 18, Tom Fogler and Sally Pray were married in the Universalist Church in Orono. Tom is the son of Raymond Fogler, T5; Sally is the daughter of our housemother, Mrs. Mary Pray. Tom and Sally were high school ‘acquaintances’ at Hasting-on-Hudson high school in Hastings, New York.

ALUMNI PRESIDENTS As has been stated elsewhere in this magazine, Sigma Chi is a leader in Alumni affairs here at Maine. Raymond Fogler is the chairman of the Union Building fund and has been an important leader in Maine alumni activities for many years. Two other Sigma Chis who have distinguished them selves as loyal and very capable alumni are Myron C. Peabody, T6, and Alfred B. Lingley,’20. These two gentlemen have served as the most recent presidents of the Gen eral Alumni Association; Brother Lingley served in this capacity from 1949 to 1951. Brother Pea body succeeded Lingley in June, 1951 and is present General Alumni president. Brother Lingley has been a member of the Alumni Council for Myron C. Peabody many years and has served on nu merous alumni committees. A res ident of Rhode Island he has been president of the University of Maine Alumni Association in that state. He has also been president of the Black Bears of Rhode Is land, a group of Maine alumni who have done much to benefit Maine students. Other important actions in Brother Lingley’s seem ingly endless chain of alumni ac tivities were chairmenships for Rhode Island of both the Library and Union Building campaigns. His has been the first area to reach its quota in both campaigns. In his spare time he serves as vice-presi dent in charge of operations of the Kleistone Rubber Company of Warren, Rhode Island. Brother Myron C. Peabody was recently elected president of the Federal Land Bank and the three other units which make up the Farm Credit Administration of Spring field, Mass. These four credit units serve agriculture throughout the Northeast. Alfred B. Lingley PINE TREE SIG 21

Bob urges any Sigma Chi alumni in this area who would like to get in on the activities to drop him a line. At a special alumni meeting here at the house during Homecoming nearly fifty returning Sigs got to gether with president Patton doing the honors. Bob spoke as did Percival Mosher, Rho Rho’s first consul; Paddv Huddilston; and present con sul, Dick Dow. At the formal initiation last month when twenty-eight new members were ushered into Sigma Chi, most of the interrogators came from the ranks of the Orono Alumni group, and they turned in fine jobs, each and everv one. RI IO RI IO ALUMNI ROSTER The lists of names on the following pages should include all of our living alumni. However, we are willing to concede without a blow landed that there are discrepancies to be found by even the casual eye. And this is why. Our alumni files were obviously in need of a shot in the cards; we took the obvious step and wrote to the National Headquarters for a complete list. Our request was granted pronto with the names of our alumni typed on convenient, fileable cards (a really helpful service, we might add). The National suggested that we check these cards with the University Alumni files which we did. However, the list is not complete yet. Thus, we would like to enter a request here. As you go through these names looking for old buddies would you kindly jot down any corrections that you can give us? If encouragement warrants it, we could put out a similar list periodically keeping it up to date as much as possible. Happy hunting. Acheson, Maj. Gen. George R...... ’26 Barrett, Basil E......
