Defining Ethnomusicology
10 1. THE HARMLESS DRUDGE : DEFINING ETHNOMUSICOLOGY DEFINITIONS. For years, people have been asking me the question: "You're an ethnomusicologist?" Shortly after 1950 it was likely to be accompanied by expressions of wonder and of the belief that I was somehow involved with "folk" music, with "primitive music," and particularly with "ancient music," and also that I must have a great deal of companionship with a tape recorder. By 1960 the questioner would likely bring up participation in an Indonesian gamelan, or perhaps an ability to "play" many of the world's odd instruments. In the 1970s, the conversation might well include the term "ethnic" music or even the etymologically outrageous "ethnomusic," and in the eighties and nineties, free association might lead to “diversity” and “world music.” I have always found it difficult to come to a precise, concise, and readily intelligible definition. Dictionaries differ considerably but espouse limited views. In the 120 years in which modern ethnomusicology can be said to have existed, since pioneer works such as those of Ellis (1885), Baker (1882), and Stumpf (1886), attitudes and orientations have changed greatly, and so has the name, from something very briefly called “Musikologie” (in the 1880s), to “comparative musicology” (through about 1950), then to “ethno- musicology” (1950–ca. 1956), quickly to “ethnomusicology” (removing the hyphen actually was an ideological move trying to signal disciplinary independence), with suggestions such as “cultural musicology” (Kerman 1985) and “socio-musicology” (Feld 1984) occasionally thrown in. The changes in name paralleled changes in intellectual orientation and emphasis. It is difficult to find a single, simple definition, to which most people in this field would subscribe, and thus ethnomusicologists have been perhaps excessively concerned with defining themselves. -

Music in the Bible By Theodore W. Burgh Music is an essential element of ancient and modern cultures. It often shapes chronological periods, as did the Motown recordings of the 1960’s and 70’s, and marks what we grieve and celebrate. While many of the uses of music in the ancient Near East are similar to those of today, the sound and experience of music in ancient times was different. It is hard for us to imagine not being able to pull music from the air and download it upon request. In antiquity, people only heard music in live musical performances. Nothing was recorded, sampled, mixed, or mass-marketed. Although we don’t know how ancient music sounded, judging from the ways it was used we do know that music was important then as it is now. By studying the ancient remains of instruments, descriptions of musical activity in texts like the Bible, and artistic representations, we gain valuable information about these enigmatic past societies and peoples—from aspects of relationships between men and women, the types of instruments used in sacred and secular performances, and occasions when music was performed. A glance at several biblical stories reveals the importance of music in the daily life of antiquity. For instance, writers describe how people used music to express an array of emotions, convey valuable information, and entertain. Moreover, there are numerous ceremonies and celebrations in the Bible where musical performance was a major part. Several passages contain descriptions of actual instruments, names of musicians, as well as places and times music was played. -

3 The Birth of Tragedy Lyric Poetry and the Music of Words he stylistic role of music in The Birth of Tragedy1 presupposes the Trelation Nietzsche had uncovered between “music and words” in his theory of meter and rhythm in ancient Greek.2 This is Nietzsche’s architectonically 3 quantitative, measured and timed, theory of words and music for his courses on rhythm and meter as well as his discussion of tragedy and music in his first book.4 A recollection of the meaning of the spirit of music also reviews the logical questions of metaphor and truth and invites a parallel with The Gay Science with regard to language and the alchemical art of love, likewise in terms of both music and science. This inquiry entails the purely philosophical questions of knowl- edge and truth yet the discussion to follow takes its point of departure from classical philology, reviewing what Nietzsche himself held to have been his most scientific “discovery” on the terms of his own discipline: a discovery never disputed by Nietzsche’s arch-critic, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Möllendorff. Indeed, and although we have become ac- customed to view Nietzsche as the perfect embodiment of the academic outsider, his discovery is now taken as the standard in his field (so standard as to be received without fanfare or routine acknowledgment as such).5 What was that discovery? 37 38 Words in Blood, Like Flowers Music and Words: The Influence of Modern Culture I. Wu Man's Pipa Spotlighted with Taipei Chinese Orchestra By Clive Paget , Musical America November 12, 2018 Wu Man, pipa player extraordinaire and founding member of the Silk Road Ensemble, was named Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America in 2013. Five years on, her Carnegie Hall mainstage appearance with the internationally acclaimed Taipei Chinese Orchestra was both a chance to hear why, and, with the orchestra presenting four representative works in their U.S. premieres, the perfect introduction to the repertoire. Forgive the digression, but for those unfamiliar with the sound and makeup of a “Chinese Orchestra,” here’s a crash course. First, there are a number of key similarities with their Western cousins, chiefly the use of cellos and double basses to create the lower string sounds, but also the inclusion of harp and a common deployment in the percussion of timpani, cymbals, and tam tam. Then there are the similar but different instruments, like the bamboo flutes (the zhongdi and the dadi ), and an array of Chinese percussion, some of it familiar perhaps from “exotic” 20th-century scores like Turandot . Lastly, there are the uniquely Chinese instruments. An array of plucked lute-like instruments that include the pipa , the liuqin , the zhongruan, and the daruan (defined by their different sizes and different numbers of strings) sit alongside hammered and plucked dulcimers and zithers like the yangqin and the guzheng , which add to the characteristically glittering mid-range sound of the orchestra. At the apex of the sound sit the erhus , a phalanx of gentle two-string fiddles (held on the lap and bowed low down) that essentially take the place of violins and violas. -

This database consists of 16 expert and novice evaluation terms, including five pairs with opposite polarity. In addition, a material library containing 72 samples (including 37 Chinese orchestral instruments, 11 Chinese minority instruments, and 24 Western orchestral instruments) and a 54-sample objective acoustic parameter set were developed as part of the study. The method of successive categories was applied to each term for subjective assessment. A mathematical model of timbre perception features (i.e., bright or dark, raspy or mellow, sharp or vigorous, coarse or pure, and hoarse or consonant) was then developed for the first time using linear regression, support vector regression, a neural network, and random forest algorithms. -

The CAMI software for Chinese musical instruments was developed and administered to 228 students in a vocational high school. A pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design with three classes designated as the experimental group for the “CAMI in LCMI,” and another three classes as the control group for the “traditional narrative teaching approach.” Collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics analysis, ANCOVA, and structural equation modeling (SEM) by SPSS 10.0 for Windows and LISREL 8.52. The results indicate that (1) the CAMI approach is superior to the traditional narrative teaching approach, (2) students show a positive perspective on the use of CAMI for instruction in the LCMI course, (3) software interface and content design have positive and direct influence on students’ learning attitude and self-awareness learning results, (4) learning attitude has a positive and direct influence on self-awareness learning results, and (5) the CAMI in Chinese musical instruments software is satisfactory assistive material for teachers in the LCMI course.
