The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. The period covered begins with the founding of the college for Negroes in 1871 and terminates in 1971• Alcorn A. and M. College, the oldest predominantly Negro land-grant college in the United States, had its beginning in 1830 as Oakland College for the education of white male students. This Presbyterian school closed its doors at the beginning of the Civil War so that its students might answer the call to arms, and upon failing to reopen after the war, the college was sold to the state for the education of her Negro citizens. The college was renamed Alcorn A. and M. College in I871 in honor of the late James L. Alcorn, who was then Governor of the State of Mississippi Hiram R. Revels, the first Negro to be elected to the United States Senate, resigned his seat and became Alcorn*s •^Alcorn A. and M. College General Catalogue, 1970-72, P • 31 • 1 2 first president. Moreover, in 1862, Congress had passed an act known as the Morrill Land-Grant Act whereby the national government gave to each state in the Union public sites equal to 3 0 ,0 0 0 acres for each senator and repre sentative in Congress for the endowment, support and maintenance of at least one college whose leading object should be, without excluding other scientifica and classic studies and including military tactics, to teach such brances of learning as are related to agriculture and p mechanical arts.
