Two years later, it joined the South Central First Season ....................................................................... 1945-46 Athletic Conference (SCAC) and remained there until All-Time Record .............................................................1166-989 1962 when Alcorn became members of the Southwest- Regular Season Conference Championships ...................16 ern Athletic Conference (SWAC). (2002, 2000, 1999, 1986, 1985, 1984, 1982, 1981, 1980, 1979, 1976, 1973, 1969, 1968, 1967, 1966) While members of the SCAC, Alcorn was led by stars Conference Tournament Titles .................................................7 Richard Smith and Vernon Purnell. Smith scored 2,527 ....................... (2002, 1999, 1984, 1983, 1982, 1980, 1979) points from 1952-56 which still stands as the most in school history and the only mark above 2,000 points. NCAA Tournament Appearances ............................................6 ................................... (2002, 1999, 1984, 1983, 1982, 1980) The Braves won their first championship in 1965-66, NCAA Tournament Record ....................................................3-6 which was their first of four consecutive SWAC titles un- 1980 First Round ...................... L, 69-57 vs. Stanford Indiana State, headlined by Larry Bird. Despite going 2002 Preliminary Round .............................L, 81-77 vs. Siena 26-0 in the regular season, Alcorn did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament because the SWAC was in NIT Appearances ...........................................................................2 a transition period where the league did not have an ...................................................................................(1985, 1979) automatic bid. It was just the second year that both NIT Record ...................................................................................1-2 Alcorn and the SWAC were Division I. Thus, the Braves, 1979 First Round .................... W, 80-78 vs. Mississippi State who were led by future NBA star Larry Smith, played in 1979 Second Round .................................L, 72-68 vs. Indiana the NIT and defeated Mississippi State 80-78 in the first 1985 First Round ....................................L, 77-75 vs. Louisville round. The very next season in 1979-80 with Smith still on the team, Alcorn again won the SWAC and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated South Alabama in the first round 70-62. Alcorn became the first-ever HBCU to win an NCAA Tournament game Alcorn’s 14-0 league record was the last time anyone in the SWAC went undefeated in conference play and the only time a team has gone undefeated in back-to-back years since the league became Division I. Smith was the SWAC Player of the Year both seasons. Under legendary head coach Davey L. Whitney, the Braves went on to play in five more NCAA Tournaments in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1999 and 2002, and also the NIT in 1985. Media Contact: Brandon Moyer – [email protected], 804-814-7275 Michaela Robbins – [email protected], 423-991-7212 The 2015 Racial and Gender Report Card: National Basketball Association by Richard Lapchick with Angelica Guiao Published on July 1, 2015 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Orlando, FL, July 1, 2015 – The 2015 National Basketball Association Racial and Gender Report Card (RGRC) was released today and confirmed the League’s continued leadership position in the sports industry with its commitment to and record for racial and gender hiring practices during the 2014-2015 NBA season. The NBA once again received men’s sports only A+ for racial hiring practices and men’s sports only B+ for gender hiring practices with scores of 97.4 points (up from 96.4) and 88 points (up from 86.5), respectively. The overall grade was an A with 92.7 points, up from 90.9 in the 2014 RGRC. The NBA was the best for all three categories among the men’s professional sports and achieved the highest grade for racial hiring practices in the history of men’s professional sport. Richard Lapchick, the director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES or The Institute) and primary author of the report, stated, “No other men’s league reaches the same points for race, gender or the combined score. The NBA remains the industry leader among men’s sports for racial hiring practices. While they did well overall for gender, especially in the League Office, women were still not well represented at the senior team levels and attention needs to be paid there.
