Press Release Meeting of the Council of Hindu Temples of North America (CHTNA) Saturday, April 21st, 2012 Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT) located in Lanham, MD hosted the annual meeting of the Council of Hindu Temples of North America (CHTNA) on Saturday April 21st 2012. The Council of Hindu Temples of North America (CHTNA), a registered 501(c)(3), non-profit Hindu organization, was established in 1984 and incorporated in the State of New York in 1986. It is governed by nine Temples as Board of Directors and has its Secretariat at the Hindu Temple Society of North America, NY. The primary objective of the Council is to unite all the Temples under a common banner including the official representation of all the Temples to speak on subjects and concerns affecting Hindu religion and culture. In addition to this objective, following are its goals; Maintain a directory of all the Temples and publish periodic newsletter distribution to all the Temples. Prepare and publish Panchangam (almanac) as per US time for use by all US Temples and their devotees. Assist member Temples in dealing with problems concerning Temples, such as visas for religious workers, benefits such as medical/life insurance, pension plans, inter-faith and intra-faith activities and management of the Temples. Collect bargain power with supplier/vendors. Sharing of common resource pools – such as priests, musicians, artist, spiritual leaders, etc. Exchange and sharing of ideas / experiences, such as: o Compliance with state/federal regulations. o Issues related to Temple management. o Internal / external conflicts of interest. o Temple security.

Maha Shivratri is the night when He is said to have performed the Tandava Nritya or the dance of pri- mordial creation, preservation and destruction. The festival is observed for one day and one night only. Maha Shivratri is universally observed by all pious Hindus with fasting, singing of bhajans, recital of Sanskrit shlokas, offering of prayers, flowers, fruits and food that is specially prepared in honor of the deity and his divine consort, goddess Parvati. The Puranas contain many stories and legends describing the origin of this festival. According to one, during the samudra manthan, Religious Calendar a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the poison was capable of destroying the entire world, and they ran to Shiva for help. As you know, building this temple has been the dream of Hindus in this region for over twelve years, and we’re thrilled to finally realize this goal. This accomplishment is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work by many people in the HANWA community, and the BOD is both honored to represent these dedicated volunteers and hum- bled by the magnitude of their devotion to the cause. The beauty of HANWA is that each member can serve the Lord and the temple in his or her own unique way. Some devotees serve the religious needs of the community by regularly opening the temple, helping the Priest perform poojas, leading bhajans, and providing Prasad. Others invest their time and expertise in maintaining and improving the facility and grounds. We also have community members who drive the fundraising efforts that are essential to building a permanent temple like the one we are inaugurating today. Others cook and serve food to the many visitors we have during the various festivals we celebrate each year. There are many, many other ways in which people support the temple and these individual contributions add up to a strong, united temple com- munity. Funeral Ceremony Guidance (Prepared by “Association of United Hindu and Jain Temples (UHJT), Washington Metropolitan Area”. Source: HACSI Publication, based on Extracts from a book published by Hindu Mandir Executives Conference, USA) Introduction The purpose of this brochure is to provide a guidance for funeral ceremony (Antyeshti sanskar) in the United States in accordance with Hindu tradition which varies in different regions of India; however the core rituals have always been based on procedures outlined in the Vedic sutras. The funeral process is guided by a Hindu priest. This process is new to our generation that grew up in US. Efforts should be made to make it practical and easier for them and their families. Preparation (Social and Legal) When the death is imminent, inform all relatives and friends. Try to fulfill wishes of the individual. Do prayers every day, eat together, plan your daily routine in such a way that one individual is with the patient at all times. Inform your priest. Delegate a friend/family member to make arrangements. Immediately after death, inform the family members and friends first. Contact the funeral homes that have cremation facilities. Such funeral homes are listed at the end. Though it is preferred to have cremation ASAP, it may be delayed by 24 to 48 hours (after death) due to legal issues or availability of cremation facility. The death certificate is provided by the funeral home. The viewing and funeral ceremony can be planned in a dignified manner. Viewing should be optional and should be decided by the family members. The funeral ceremony may be short (up to 2 hours).
