TREACHEROUS ‘SARACENS’ AND INTEGRATED MUSLIMS: THE ISLAMIC OUTLAW IN ROBIN HOOD’S BAND AND THE RE-IMAGINING OF ENGLISH IDENTITY, 1800 TO THE PRESENT 1 ERIC MARTONE Stony Brook University [email protected] 53 In a recent Associated Press article on the impending decay of Sherwood Forest, a director of the conservancy forestry commission remarked, “If you ask someone to think of something typically English or British, they think of the Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood… They are part of our national identity” (Schuman 2007: 1). As this quote suggests, Robin Hood has become an integral component of what it means to be English. Yet the solidification of Robin Hood as a national symbol only dates from the 19 th century. The Robin Hood legend is an evolving narrative. Each generation has been free to appropriate Robin Hood for its own purposes and to graft elements of its contemporary society onto Robin’s medieval world. In this process, modern society has re-imagined the past to suit various needs. One of the needs for which Robin Hood has been re-imagined during late modern history has been the refashioning of English identity. What it means to be English has not been static, but rather in a constant state of revision during the past two centuries. Therefore, Robin Hood has been adjusted accordingly. Fictional narratives erase the incongruities through which national identity was formed into a linear and seemingly inevitable progression, thereby fashioning modern national consciousness. As social scientist Etiénne Balibar argues, the “formation of the nation thus appears as the fulfillment of a ‘project’ stretching over centuries, in which there are different stages and moments of coming to self-awareness” (1991: 86). -

Le Punisher, anti-héros à la tête de mort et l'un des personnages les plus célèbres de Marvel Comics, apparaît pour la première fois dans The Amazing Spider-Man #129. On le voit tenter de tuer Peter Parker, convaincu qu'il s'agit d'un meurtrier et d'un criminel. Peu à peu, le personnage se développe. On apprend qu'il se nomme Frank Castiglione (ou Frank Castle) et qu'il mène une guerre sans merci aux malfaiteurs depuis que des mafiosi ont tué sa famille. Très vite, il devient l'un des vilains les plus populaires de Marvel Comics. Confronté plusieurs fois à Spider-Man, il se retrouve également face à face avec Captain America et Daredevil. À chaque fois, les méthodes expéditives de l'anti-héros usant volontier d'armes à feu permettent de jeter une lumière positive sur les super-héros (qui eux, n'utilsent généralement que de leurs poings). C'est particulièrement flagrant dans Daredevil #183 (juin 1982) dessiné et scénarisé notamment par Frank Miller dans lequel l'usage par Frank Castle de pistolets ou de fusils est condamné au profit de la méthode du héros Matt Murdock qui veut lui amener les criminels devant la justice. Winstead ____________________________ Advisor English Graduate Program ABSTRACT This dissertation makes a significant contribution to postcolonial medieval studies by examining how fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English authors use representations of non-Christian and interfaith marriages to enter a wider Christian European discourse centered around the threat of the religious Other. Because such marriages are not well documented historically in medieval England, my dissertation argues that their portrayal is not a reflection of actual practice, but rather a fantasy that allows these authors to engage actively in maintaining and defending the dominance of Christianity and the Catholic Church. As my readings show, these texts serve to bolster the Church’s campaign against non-Christians by moving this campaign to marriage’s domestic sphere. Marriage is thus not only politically important, as it enables alliances to be forged among kingdoms and nations; it is now also religiously important, as it becomes a means for the culture to fantasize about the extent to which Christianity can dominate. The texts I examine cover an extensive period of the later Middle Ages, ranging from 1300 to 1450; the period of one hundred fifty years indicates that authors maintained an interest in conversion as a consequence of marriage and suggests that this motif was pervasive. -

As a young adult, Brown attended Tech High School in Memphis and graduated from the Memphis Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in Fine Art. Brown served in the Air Force during World War II. After graduation, he found work with Loew’s Theaters, where he created publicity displays. Brown worked as a staff photographer for the Memphis Press-Scimitar for twenty years, retiring in April of 1980 as the newspaper’s chief photographer. After retirement, Brown continued taking publicity photographs for various Memphis theaters as well as images of public figures, personal friends, and Memphis and its residents. He received the Freedom Foundation Award in 1972. In 1986, Brown donated $5,000 to Memphis State University to establish the Saul Brown/Memphis Press Scimitar Award, awarded to students in news journalism and news photography beginning in the 1987-1988 academic year. In 1987, due to his financial support of the school’s academic fund, Brown was granted membership in the school’s Presidents Club. Saul Brown passed away in Memphis on March 13, 1992 at the home of Myron Taylor, the brother of Mildred, his late wife. Scope and Provenance The Saul Brown Photograph Collection was donated to the Memphis Public Library and Information Center in 2007. -

Summary The Faerie Queene is a long epic poem that begins and ends with Christian affirmations. In it, Edmund Spenser draws on both Christian and classical themes, integrating the two traditions with references to contemporary politics and religion. The poem begins with a representation of holiness in book 1, and the Mutabilitie Cantos (first printed with the poem in 1609 after Spenser’s death) conclude with a prayer. Book 1 is identified as the Legend of the Knight of the Red Cross (or Saint George) in canto 2, verses 11-12. Red Cross, as an individual, is the Protestant Everyman, but as Saint George, historically England’s patron saint, he also represents the collective people of England. He is a pilgrim who hopes to achieve the virtue holiness, and for the reader his adventures illustrate the path to holiness. Red Cross’s overarching quest, as an individual, is to behold a vision of the New Jerusalem, but he also is engaged in a holy quest involving the lady Una, who represents the one true faith. To liberate Una’s parents, the king and queen, Adam and Eve, Red Cross must slay the dragon, who holds them prisoner. The dragon represents sin, the Spanish Armada, and the Beast of the Apocalypse, and when Red Cross defeats the dragon he is in effect restoring Eden. -

DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982. -

Both names raise problems, and some historical explanation is useful at the outset. At the risk of ignoring subtle theological distinctions, though, a reader would not go far wrong by understanding both terms as meaning simply “ancient Chris tian denominations mainly active outside Europe.” Chris tian ity originated in the Near East, and during the fi rst few centuries it had its greatest centers, its most prestigious churches and monasteries, in Syria, Palestine, and Mesopotamia.
