I would first like to acknowledge my dissertation committee members for their advice and encouragement over these many years. Douglas Foley, Ward Keeler, Robert Fernea, Kamran Ali and Mark Nichter provided constructive comments during those times when I could not find the right words and continuing motivation when my own patience and enthusiasm was waning. As with the subjects of my study, their ‘stories’ of ethnographic practice were both informative and entertaining at just the right moments. Many others have also offered inspiration and valuable suggestions over the years, including Eufracio Abaya, Laura Agustín, Priscilla Alexander, Dr. Nicolas Bautista, Katherine Frank, Jeanne Francis Illo, Geoff Manthey, Sachiyo Yamato, Aida Santos, Melbourne Tapper, and Kamala Visweswaran. This research would never have gotten off the ground without the support of the ReachOut AIDS Education Foundation (now ReachOut Foundation International).

Cabanes - iii - Acknowledgements The abiding social concern of this dissertation—the diasporic experience of marginalisation—is something that has always been close to my heart. My parents, Cynthia and Edward, were Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Saudia Arabia for more than twenty-five years. As a child, I used to spend my summers with them and the Filipino community in Riyadh. It was in observing the lives of my parents and their friends that I first became witness to the travails of Filipino migrant life. My dear and long-time neighbourhood friends, Lakhvir and Manpreet, are Manila-born Indians. It was in growing up with them that I first saw the difficulties of migrant life in the Philippines. I owe the inspiration for this work to my beloved parents and their fellow diasporic Filipinos, as well as to my forever friends Lakhvir and Manpreet and their fellow diasporas in the Philippines.

I intend to let my students read some of the stories here very soon. I just wish the story was longer. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Written by Lourd De Veyra who is known as a ruggedly intellectual pop icon, this one of my favourites in the collection. My memories of the genre had to do with taking Film Noir in college and writing about overtones and undertones, themes, undercurrents, and atmospheres… Aha! January 15, by William J. That's my job. Rosario Cruz-Lucero. Thanks to may influential young friends. Ron Morales has worked or more than a decade in the film industry and has found voice as a director with his award-winning debut feature film Santa Mesa starring Oscar-winner Melissa Leo. In many movies or T. Batacan , did when she published her widely read and universally praised serial killer novel Smaller and Smaller Circles in Log in. The comics are stylish and cool delivering up a vision of a dark noir-ish Manila. I thought I'd try this genre but it's not just for me. But sometimes I read papers online just to get a portrait of the city and you know what? Rating: 3. Manila Noir did some butchering, indeed.
