Mc Maion Curriculum Materials Service Preface This student manual, An Introduction to Greenhouse Production, is presented in its first revision, providing a very readable, current, basic text for those preparing for greenhouse and floriculture work. This is the first full-color edition. This publication replaces The Greenhouse Worker Student Manual. At the beginning of each chapter, competencies are listed that can be achieved as the result of studying information in that chapter. These competencies have been suggested by the author and veri- fied by industry experts. Related math and science concepts are also included at the beginning of each chapter. The list of terms to know provides familiarity with the industry terms used in that chapter and improves communication. Straightforward definitions for these terms, relating to greenhouse produc- tion, are included in a glossary at the end of the manual. At the end of each chapter, students can take a self-check on the information they have learned by using the review questions. Page references are included for help in locating the information needed. The author has updated all floriculture statistics he included so students can be kept current. Also, a new feature has been added in this revision an overview of perennial production in Chapter 14. Begonia malabarica Lam., found naturally in the hilly regions of South India and Sri Lanka called by the tribals as Narayana Sanjeevi i.e., possess miraculous therapeutic properties. The present study targets in vitro culture, field establishment and evaluation of its genetic uniformity using anatomical, molecular markers followed by callus induction and establishment of cell suspension. Explants such as shoot tip and leaves from in vitro germinated seeds were cultured on Murashige- Skoog medium. Maximum callus induction was obtained in Murashige-Skoog medium with 0.3 mg L–1 2, 4-D + 0.5 mg L–1 BAP i.e., 90.8 ± 2.8 % with 2.5 ±0.1 g callus growth. In vitro suspension of cells and their growth rate were also analyZed. RAPD and ISSR experiments were carried to confirm the genetic fidelity among in vitro and in vivo plants. 12 RAPD and 7 ISSR primers raised 119 amplicons. Genomic DNA amplification showed similarity between the in vivo and the in vitro generated plantlets. The overall results revealed the uniformity of the in vitro raised B. malabarica plantlets in terms of histoanatomical genetical features and substantiated the assumption that in vitro micropropagation is the secure mode for mass propagation of true to type plants without any somaclonal variations.

Phytoremediation is one way in which this problem can be tackled, with living walls being a viable option for places with limited space. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of five plant species in a living wall to remove Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and to identify whether the type of pollutant has any influence. An enclosed chamber was used to add the contaminants n-hexane and formaldehyde independently. Total VOCs were measured for three days in two scenarios: (1) empty chamber, and (2) chamber with living wall. Five living walls were prepared, each with three plants of the same species: Spathiphyllum wallisii, Philodendron hederaceum, Ficus pumila, Tradescantia pallida, and Chlorophytum comosum. There was no correlation between leaf area/fresh weight/dry weight and the contaminant reduction. In general, all five species were more efficient in reducing TVOCs when exposed to formaldehyde than to n-hexane. Chlorophytum comosum was the most efficient species in reducing the concentration of TVOCs for both contaminants, Spathiphyllum wallisii being the least efficient by far.
