ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF SOUTH BARWON FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB

At the Clubrooms, 10.30am, Sunday November 16, 2014

Take an interest in the future direction of the Club,

ALL FINANCIAL AND LIFE MEMBERS PLEASE ATTEND

President’s Report It is my pleasure to present our annual report for season 2014. For the first time since 2008 our senior football team missed playing in the finals and, whilst playing in so many consecutive finals is an amazing feat in itself, no team can afford to stop for a breather in this most competitive of competitions. Our on field highlight this year was our brilliant reserves team going back to back to win our third reserves premiership since 1998. It was also great to see both our Colts teams taking part in September action. Quality players competing at that level can only provide huge expectations for the future.

The major low light for the year occurred on 30 August when Marg Walerys, our beloved trainer, life member and friend passed away after battling a debilitating heart condition for many years. Marg had been a trainer at Barwon and South Barwon for nearly 30 years and had often said that her life revolved around her family and the football club. It was Marg's wish to have a memorial service at the clubrooms and she would have been humbled by the massive attendance. I once again extend my sympathy to Peter, Jason, Tara, Trent and Amy.

Following on from our previous year's clubrooms extension project we embarked in the preseason on the long awaited kitchen upgrade. With only a small window of opportunity between mid March and mid April we were able to demolish the old kitchen and then build a modern state of the art commercial kitchen that will hopefully serve our club, and the Highton Cricket Club, for many years into the future. Once again this club is indebted to the City of Greater Geelong for providing a cash grant and regulatory guidance to enable the facility to be completed without too many hitches. From our club's perspective I would like to personally acknowledge the following people: - David Boyle who project managed the upgrade, - Chris Doak of Concept Electrics, our major sponsor, for electrical work. - Gary "Rocket" Riley for plaster work. - Craig "Spook" Douglas, Brett Cunningham, Tony Fagan and Steve Toohey for general carpentering and plumbing work. - Andrew Spina for the bricklaying work. - Geoff Wiseman, Vern Matthewson and Noel Hooley for painting the upgraded facility. - and, last but not least, Elaine Thompson and her ladies committee and canteen volunteers for their patience and understanding during a rather turbulent time.

A further off field achievement this year was the replacement of a condemned light tower in the north west corner of the top oval. It is our intention to replace the remaining three wooden towers during 2015.

I would like to thank all our sponsor partners for their continued support which is both generous, appreciated and critical to our ongoing success. Without your support we would not be able to continually improve our facilities, grow, develop and provide opportunities for our youth. Our sponsor partners are recognized in front of booklet.

Thanks to wife Lyn and Noelene Brady for managing apparel this year. Thanks to John Darragh for organizing the Super Draw, Roger Blacksell & Geoff Wiseman for coordinating the Swans Big Bash, and again Roger for the burger tent roster and again organizing a very successful golf day.

At this time I would like to acknowledge our football section. To senior coaches Warwick Knuckey and Matthew Scarlett , it certainly was a challenging year with key players retiring and a of players on VFL lists, and our worst run with injuries for many years made selection extremely difficult As coaches you kept focused, showed strong leadership and determination and although not making the finals there are many positives you can take from this year as we look to the 2015 season.

To our reserves coaches James Maas and Chris May, your back to back premiership win was a remarkable achievement. There were many weeks when our club had 15 or more players unavailable or injured, but the reserves still found a way to win. To lose only 2 games for the year speaks volumes for your leadership, commitment, never give up attitude, respect and confidence you have developed with the group over the year. To James who is retiring as reserves coach, I thank you for your many years of service and winning the premiership is just reward for you.

A special thanks to all support staff. Managers, trainers, time keepers runners, water boys, everyone that helped out throughout the year. I would especially like to thank Bill McCann who is stepping aside as senior team manager. Bill’s tireless work and commitment to the senior group over many years will be sadly missed. Our club acknowledged Bill’s service to our football department a few years ago when Bill was rewarded with a life membership. Bill will still remain as historian, and I am sure will enjoy looking at the football from behind the glass. Well done Bill.

I would like to thank our Colts coaches this year. Colts A coaches Ben Holz and Shaun Taylor with manager Roger Box and Colts B coach Daniel Chittenden and manager Simon Hogan for their contribution and support this year. In an up and down year both sides were able to play in respective finals but were unfortunately beaten in the semi and preliminary finals respectively. Our coaches showed great leadership and teaching skills in developing this squad of players. Our aim is to develop and prepare players for senior football and Ben, Shaun and Daniel have certainly done this. It was great to see Jack Driver making his senior debut this year. I am certain that we will see many of this group playing senior football in the years to come.

A sincere thank you Sandy Wasik and Scott Edwards and to all our junior section, coaches, team managers and their support staff for their great work during the season. They have dedicated their time and have put in a tireless amount of work during the season to ensure that all our children are doing what they love most - playing footy. A great job and greatly appreciated by the entire club. A special acknowledgement to U/14 Division 5 coaches Ash Phillips and Harry Wilks and their amazing team who snagged a premiership on the last kick of the day from an undefeated Torquay team.

To Theo Nicopoulos and all your helpers at Auskick, thank you for another successful year. With approximately 200 boys and girls participating this year, you are the future of this club.

A special thanks to our ladies committee of Elaine Thompson, Michelle Fergeus and Gayle Cameron and all those who helped throughout the year. Your support from canteen on match days, Thursday night meals, half time functions and function days make our ladies the most important asset we have at our club. I thank you all.

Our 2014 Club Committee is a group of people that are passionate and have worked tirelessly throughout the season. At all times, they have had the club’s best interest first and foremost. They have performed an outstanding job and I am privileged to be associated with an amazing team of people. They must be totally commended for all their hard work and efforts in helping grow our club to be the best we can be.

To our two appointed Senior Coaches for 2015, Matthew Scarlett and Warwick Knuckey, I for one am very excited and enthused about our club's future.

To my wife Lyn, again thanks for your continued support.

Richard Holz President

Ladies Committee Report 2014 has once again been a very successful year for the Ladies Committee catering each weekend for Senior, Junior and Aus Kick canteens and Thursday night meals.

Michelle Fergeus came on board as our new secretary. Many thanks to Lyn Holz, our past secretary for all her dedicated time and work. Michelle and Gayle Cameron- Treasurer have been such a great support throughout the season and I would like to thank them for all their hard work and time in assisting me. Their help is greatly appreciated. All the committee members also deserve all my thanks for their support, advice, encouragement and assistance throughout the season. .

Special thanks must go to the ladies who helped me with preparation during the season. They were Carol May, Inge Garvey, Lyn Holz and Noelene Brady. The canteen cannot operate without the help of those people who go that extra mile to help the canteen run smoothly. Thursday night meals and home canteen days involve lots of preparation and players and supporters are very lucky that I have great people around me to help.

This year has been a lot harder to get people to help in the canteen on home games. With the departure of so many players last year we lost a lot of dedicated volunteers. It is very surprising to know that the main people who help in the canteen don’t even have children playing for South.

I finally got my wish come true. A brand new kitchen. The big day came when it was finished. It was panic stations for a while as the guys were still working in the kitchen until 5.30pm the night before our first home game. They did a fantastic job to have the canteen actually operating. Richard kept promising me that the kitchen would be ready but it was touch and go. A special thanks to all those guys who worked on the kitchen. You were stupendous. Also a special thanks to those ladies who helped me set up the canteen that night.

The canteen was open every weekend, Saturdays and Sundays this season catering for senior home games, junior games and Aus Kick. The canteen would not be able to operate if we didn’t have so many people volunteering to help. Thanks must go to all those who volunteered during the season. As I said before, I really struggled some weeks to get enough helpers for home games. Thanks especially go to those who were able to fill in at the last minute. I would especially like to thank Michelle who helped run the Aus Kick canteen. I find helping in the canteen is a really satisfying activity to do and I really look forward to every weekend. It is great to know that you are giving something back to the community. Our volunteers are what makes our club so successful. Many clubs in Geelong are very jealous of the wonderful support we have from so many people. You are very much appreciated. Again serving food after each home game has been very successful. A special thanks must go to all those who helped with this.

Our Thursday night meals were attended excellently again. Chicken Parmi night proved to be very popular. One night we served 180 meals. It made such a difference having a new chipper, larger oven and a dishwasher. I think the players found the dishes not as much of a chore this year. One thing that we found was we were out of the kitchen a little earlier on Thursday nights.

Again Lyn Holz and Noelene Brady did most of the preparation for the casserole nights. Thanks must go to all the ladies and man who helped on Thursday nights, Wendy Durran, Debbie Stavenuiter, Karen Biemans, Cathy Box, Inge Garvey, Jenny Jarvis, Simone Buchanan, Mandy Hansen, Sue Dodds, Caroline Dickens, Carole Fisher, Sandy Wiseman, Gail Richards and David Nagle.

Once again this year we were able to avoid price rises in the canteen. It is thanks to our valuable sponsors that we are able to maintain our low prices. Our policy is to try and keep the food affordable for the family but still maintain our high quality. Thanks to:-Bakers Delight-Highton, Glynn Harvey, Barwon Foods, Kattwinkel Meats-Highton, The Farmhouse Bakery-North Geelong, Yummy Mummy Lolly Shop-Belmont, Vinnie Guida-The Bean Alliance and Anthony Conway-General Mills.

A big thank you to Jonsey for doing the ground raffle this season. Your help was very much appreciated. Thank you so much for doing this. Kattwinkels supplied two meat packs for most home game ground raffles. A huge thanks to Kattwinkels. A big thank you must go to you, the supporters, who contribute each week to the raffle.

The guys in the Burger Donga did another amazing job. Our hamburgers are still the most popular and the best in the competition. Thank you very much guys.

I would like to acknowledge a special donation made to the canteen by Mark Corrigan. He must have heard some of the ladies complaining about the state of the knives in the kitchen. Anyhow, he donated a set of knives. Thank you very much. They are very well used.

Thank you to Lyn, Noelene, Gayle, Carol, Inge and Michelle who organized the catering for the and Gold Swan Day. It takes a lot of pressure off me. Your help was immeasurable. Thanks must also go to the ladies who supplied food for these special days.

Richard and his committee do a wonderful job around the club but they are not the only ones who do the lions’ share of work. The two Bills’ have worked so hard for the club and I was very sad to hear that they were retiring from their main volunteering jobs. I suppose the club will cope without you but replacing you is going to be very hard. Thank you very much.

This is my ninth year as president and operating the canteen. Would you believe I still look forward to the start of the season every year. I enjoying being involved with the canteen and the footy club. You are certainly never lonely when you are involved in a footy club and the friends you make are irreplaceable. Thank you South Barwon.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate the Reserves and the U14’s Football teams and all the Netball teams that won their grand finals this year. It was a great achievement for the club.

Elaine Thompson

President South Barwon Ladies Committee

Senior Coaches Report The 2014 season started as any other for the South Barwon Swans. Determining player movements was at the top of the agenda after we were appointed as the new senior coaches, left to fill the huge shoes left by James and Case after yet another fantastic senior and reserves premiership in 2013. For us as the coaches of such a proud club it was a fantastic opportunity to continue to build on the values that have made South Barwon Football and Netball Club one the most successful, if not the most successful country club in Australia over the past decade.

The retirement of James Garvey and Paul Sullivan, two of the most decorated GFL players were always going to be extremely hard to replace but thankfully the majority of the 2013 squad were ready for another tilt at success in 2014. Club captain Anthony Biemans was also considering heading over to for a stint at Port which he decided to do early on in the pre season, a great opportunity for Biemo, but obviously leaving a large hole to fill!

In 2014 we welcomed 13 new players to the club along with some past players returning to South after some time away. Once again we had a number of players listed on Geelong’s, Bulldogs’ and North Ballarat’s VFL lists. A great reward for the hard work the boys put in over the pre season. These players included: Mitch Herbison, Ben Raidme, Tom Maas, Darcy Fort, Fraser Fort, Jay Lever, Andrew Boseley, Jordan Keras and Jordie Duncan. We also had a new captain, 2013 Best and Fairest winner, Dan Roy, who was voted by the playing group to lead our great club into the 2014 season.

After two practice matches, the second being a hard fought hit out against Terang/Mortlake it was an indifferent start to the year for the swans. A first up win in the grand final replay against Grovedale was then followed by a string of losses and two draws, putting us in a difficult position for a finals berth. To the groups credit we fought our way back into contention during the second half of the season but in the end just fell short of our always high expectations by missing the finals. Something that will drive our current group to get the club back to where it should be, vying for the flag in 2015.

Throughout the year over 40 players played senior football for our great club. Although not ideal for stability within the side it was fantastic to see a number of players get their opportunity through, in many cases years of hard work and commitment.

As senior coaches we get to see and admire the huge amount of work Richard, the committee and numerous volunteers put in to ensure our club continues to build year after year and stay the number 1 club. From the senior playing group and coaching staff we give a huge thanks to the time you all put in at the South Barwon Football and Netball Club.

To all of the players, we have enjoyed coaching you immensely. In a challenging year it was fantastic to see week after week the commitment the playing group displayed. To the coaching staff- Travis Agg, Jason Armistead, Tim Sherman, James Maas and Chris May, a huge thank you for the time and effort you put in throughout the year. You were a great group to work with and we look forward to doing it all again next year. Bill McCann your work this year, like the last 10 + years at the club was tireless and we thank you and your match day apprentice Pete Hansen for keeping us organised throughout the week.

Although there was no senior premiership this year the opposition clubs couldn’t quite ensure the Swans missed out on a flag altogether. As senior coaches we congratulate the players and coaches, James and Chris on going back to back in the reserves. After seeing first hand the work you all put in this year, there was never going to be any doubt in the result when the siren sounded.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Netball club on another fantastic year. Once again well done to Fiona and everyone involved with the Netball club in not only having 20 teams involved in the finals but also for your work off the court in continuing to build on the profile of our club.

Matt Scarlett and Warwick Knuckey

Reserves Coaches Report The 2014 Reserves season provided change with Chris coming on board as a co- coach for the season. We were both confidant that the young group that had come up from the colts and the new players to the group were once again going to help us have a great year. Each of the new players as well as the players that had been there before were all really committed to having further success.

The season was an indifferent start for us dropping 2 out of the first 6 games of the year. After the bye though we really started to gain momentum and have some great results. With the competition being as even as it has been for a long time, it was important that we continued to play good consistent football. All the players committed and we got the result we were after at the end of the year, which was to finish in top spot.

The first final was fiercely contested and we got away with a close win and another grand final appearance. Going into grand final day there was no way that we would let this one slip. With having so much to play for with the sad passing of Marg we made sure that this result would be for her. All the players that played that day, and represented us throughout the year all played a significant role in the ultimate reward in not only a premiership, but going back to back.

The challenge now is for all the young guys to continue to improve and challenge each other to better themselves and better the standard that the reserves conduct themselves. Premierships are not easy to win and the big challenge is to stay in front of our rivals.

With another year over we would like to thank Richard and the committee for all their support of us in our roles. To the sponsors that help keep this great club going, we thank you. To the senior coaching staff, thanks for another great year. Last but not least to Ben Holt for running water all year, Dale for once again being the runner and most importantly to Wendy for all of her help throughout the year. Once again it allowed us just to go about our business as coaches.

We would both like to thank our families for their support of us throughout the year. With a lot of time spent planning and preparing each week for games and then game day, we both really appreciate it.

Thanks again for a great year to everyone involved, and let’s have more success in 2015.

James Maas & Chris May Reserves Co Coaches

Go Swans.

Colts Division 1 Coaches Report Season 2014 started in November 2013, with us being appointed new coaches at the helm, a large focal point was getting to know the large, talented and energetic squad that would represent the club at Colts level. Pre-season training was shaped around building the player’s fitness, ball skills, decision-making and match simulation that would build into what would become the South Barwon way. An emphasis was to have the senior training and match structures flow through to the Colts group so the transition to senior football will be a natural one in years to come. Training as a Colts group, joining the senior group for sessions, two competitive practice matches and some team bonding at Bancoora Beach rounded out our pre-season training program.

The practice games against Hampden league club Terang and Grovedale FC helped prepare us for the season ahead and implement a game style that we had been working on all summer. We were both very impressed with the efforts of all boys over the summer pre season and we held immense excitement for a successful season ahead.

Early rounds saw the Swans win three of four grading matches – with the addition of our three Falcons listed players to our already fit, fast and skilful unit the team seemed to grind out teams early and then run away with games with flurries of goals coming in the second half of matches. Our backline, which was to be the reliable strength of the team all year were well led by captain Riley Brown and Thomas Hicks in the key back posts.

So the early loss to St Marys was to highlight they would be the competition threat along with Newtown and St Josephs. It took until round 9 to have our next loss (St Marys again 11 points) and the boys were playing a fantastic brand of footy. The midfield group were working hard on structures implemented over pre season and were displaying a high level of work rate. And our forwards were also trying hard to be disciplined with their structures and stick to instruction to cap off the hard work by all players up the ground. Unfortunately we would lose two in a row, another narrow 11 point defeat to Newtown.

The boys got themselves back on track and were able to string more wins together through playing their attacking, hard running and fast ball movement brand of footy. So the team would go through the year dropping five games of footy and winning the other thirteen. A costly loss to Colac mid season possibly costing us a top three spot on the ladder and the double chance in the finals we were seeking all year. In the end we would finish equal on wins and losses with St Josephs, but with the grading games worth two premiership points as opposed to the home and away rounds four we would finish two points below them.

We would play our first final in an elimination against Leopold, who made a late run to grab fifth spot. With a few boys under a fitness cloud due to illness during the week the team put in a stirring effort to lead all day and run out comfortable 17 point winners. Next we would front up against St Josephs at Simonds Stadium in the First Semi final. Head to head, we both had beaten each other once during the year, us beating them early in the grading games convincingly and them knocking us off mid year in the home and away rounds. Unfortunately we would go down by 16 points, in a real arm wrestle of a match. We held a narrow lead all the first half, were down by 4 points at three quarter time, St Josephs then kicked three goals in the last to our single major this proving to be the difference.

So although we had a disappointing exit to the finals the season was in many ways a very successful one. It was a pleasure as coaches for us to witness the development of all players in the colts group, B’s players that came up and played matches throughout the year demonstrated great improvement, the last few matches some top age u/16’s players also tasted colts football experience. The junior football system is clearly in a healthy state at South Barwon.

Several players experienced playing football at a higher level throughout the year, three boys – Will Sexton, Brett Blair and James Sydall all played TAC cup representing the . Billy Richie, Campbell Buchanan, Jack Bennett, James Sydall and Will Sexton all represented the GFL in a win versus Peninsula, Billy Richie was awarded the medal for best on ground and kicked a bag of goals up forward. Our Best and Fairest winner Jack Driver played the last three rounds in the seniors acquitting himself very well.

To the top age players who go on now to join our senior group, all the best, with the talent you all displayed this year and further hard work and development there is no reason why you can't all play regular senior football next season. We do boast a young list so the quality of our Colts squad will again be strong, good luck to those boys who are lucky enough to be selected to do a pre season with the Geelong Falcons, work hard and give yourselves every chance.

As coaches we get to see the countless hours that are put in behind the scenes and the support that is required to ensure each team runs out each weekend. Thank you to the club’s volunteers, player’s parents, sponsors and supporters that make everything possible, you are what makes this club so great. To the president Richard Holz, your support from the day we started has been unquestionable, we need to thank you for not only the opportunity to coach this great club but also for the trust you put in us from the day we took over. To our team manager Roger Box, thanks for all the work you did for us behind the scenes, this certainly does not go un-noticed, from the necessary paperwork, assisting us coaching, to the management of all equipment and the one thousand other jobs you do. You were a great to work with and made our jobs a lot easier over the year. Also a big thank you to Daniel Roksa, the work you did with all injured players during the week, our runner and assisting our already very effective trainers was most appreciated. Your knowledge, experience and dedication in sport science proved very valuable. Thanks to all trainers who assisted during the year.

To all the players, we are extremely proud of the way you handled yourselves throughout the year and you should all be proud of what you achieved. You were an absolute pleasure to coach and made our job easy from week to week. We both look forward to another exciting year ahead in 2015

. Shaun Taylor and Ben Holz Go Swans!

Colts Division 2 Coaches Report Although the South Barwon Colts B’s did not make the Grand Final this year the players and I will still contest that it has been a successful year. As individuals and as a team, every player has developed over the year and put themselves in an exciting position when preseason kicks off later this year/early next year. Every player can take many things away from this year, both on and off the field.

From the start of the year the team was promoted into Division 3, which, from my perspective, was a great result and fantastic opportunity to play some higher quality opposition. Against easier sides teams can get into some bad habits and tend to go through the motions, whereas this promotion forced the team to continuously develop throughout the season.

The normal season was filled with mixed results. As a team we had some great results playing against the lower ladder sides, but failed to win against teams that sat above us on the ladder. In the losses we came very close a few times to knocking off Corio, Grovedale and Bannockburn, but in the end it came down to lapses during the game and losing the contested football. The opposition were bigger than us, older than us, and tried to intimidate us. Basically, we were playing teams of MANCHILDS.

Unfortunately you cannot change a style of play or game plan at a “click of fingers”. Sometimes it takes years to change. We took it out on the track in an effort to win the contested ball and to put up a fight when it started to get tough on a Saturday. We needed to change our style of play to counter the top sides and be more competitive. Training was tough and was modelled on AFL/GFL football from Matthew Scarlett, Warwick Knuckey, Matthew Verfurth and Dale Amos. Lots of tackling, picking up and winning loose balls under pressure, defensive running, and of course working on winning that contested footy. The forward line was re-structured to suit our forwards, and forwards worked harder defensively. The backline developed their spreading and run, and the on-ballers developed their defensive running.

There were passages throughout the year where the players looked incredible; coast to coast ball movement and repeated efforts to win the ball. The only thing was we could not maintain it for four quarters. For me, watching from the sidelines, the game where it all changed was against Bannockburn at Bell Post Hill towards the end of the year. Although we lost by one kick, every player was putting his body on the line, and the boys really united as a team. They supported each other and you could sense each player wanted to win for each other, not themselves.

From that game the boys started playing relentless and united football, a trademark the club has held for the last 10 or more years. The boys were relentless with their style of play; hard, tough football. They were united as a team and supported each other no matter what. Even though teams were bigger in size, the players refused to be intimidated and won games by being harder at the ball. And furthermore it couldn't have come at a better time.

Playing in finals was a great experience for all. All players can hold their heads high on their efforts during the final series. As the Honey Badger would say, you boys pinned the ears back and gave it a red hot dip. And as I said during the year, each of you can now look each other in the eyes and know that the players you played with will always have your back.

This season would have been an absolute disaster if it wasn’t for the additional help on the sidelines. Simon Hogan ensured everything ran like clockwork during the day. As I have never really realised, a team manager works tirelessly and is constantly fixing or amending things up until the last minute. Steve Kent and Josh Hassan were amazing on the sidelines, both tactically and always being there to offer support. Club legend Jason Armistead was always there to help for the couple of games I was unable to coach. Anthony Conway was our regular timekeeper and Al Paulus and Phil Jones were always about to give some information on the opposition. A big thank you to all of you from the players and myself.

Until next year, RELENTLESS AND UNITED!

Daniel Chittenden

IN BRIEF Previous years decisions to operate with a whole of club fundraising policy again made fundraising easier to coordinate between the junior and senior sections and also in line with previous years decisions, fees were set at a level required to cover the true operational costs of fielding our junior teams.

Once again Roger Blacksell was the key figure behind the entire club fundraising with the Swan Drop, Swans Night out with the Glitter Gang and coordination of the burger donger all coordinated by Rog. Of course don’t forget the Golf day still to come on SUNDAY OCTOBER 26.

Junior fees for 2014 included little league @ $150 and youth aged players @ $200. It should be noted that despite our constant need to keep increasing fees that costs keep increasing as well. The message here never changes - ITS MASSIVELEY IMPORTANT THAT CLUB FUNDRAISING IS SUPPORTED AT EVERY TURN.

If you even have a hint of thinking that you might know someone who may be interested in sponsoring the club on some level then see Roger Blacksell and help get them on board for another massive year in 2015

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Whilst the bottom oval started of with the best coverage of grass it has seen in over a decade things quickly fell away when the weather hit and lots of games were played in very muddy conditions. Once again ground availability is just one of the issues coaches have learned to manage in order to ensure that we have the ground available for Saturday’s games.

With both grounds being used constantly its great work by all our coaches to ensure this sharing of facilities all flows along smoothly. I know the kids would love to be on the top oval all the time but as we all know, it just can’t handle that amount of traffic.

It is important for all our kids to get to play at home and whilst it doesn't happen often there are those weekends where up to 9 of our 12 junior teams all get to be at home. When we get a mixture of age groups at home over any one day it gives our players and parents a great sense of community and ownership of the club and this is evident by the ever increasing number of kids and parents seen watching at senior games.

With little interest shown in girls footy the decision was made not to try to reintroduce the Girls Youth Football team, whilst Football Geelong are asking for clubs to field u12 Girls teams for a new competition next year at this stage our present numbers suggest that we wont have a team, however has as always been our operational agenda if a surge of interest happens we will endeavour to accommodate the community. Surprise, surprise, once again when the seniors weren’t at home but the juniors were, guess who was up at the club manning the canteen. Elaine Thompson's commitment to the smooth operation and success of the canteen is a massive bonus for the club and very much appreciated by all those people looking for some hot food and drinks on those cold winter mornings. A special thanks also to Michelle Fergeus from Auskick (and now with a son in our u10 team) who hung around on some Sunday mornings after Auskick to help out and just like Elaine was often the last to leave, after the cleaning was done.

NEXT YEAR PLANNING:

Growth in junior numbers this year slipped a bit with this year at the higher ages, the first in a long time where we only fielded 2 u16 teams. That was totally offset by a massive jump in u10 players this year totalling at 91. Preliminary planning for 2015 shows expectations to be 4 x u/10, 3 x u/12, 3 x u/14 & 3 x u16 teams. Our u16 numbers next year show that we need about 10 more players to ensure we can field 3 teams otherwise the option to combine a team with some one else may be required. That still requires about 80 volunteers to operate as officials. That means that for every 3rd player we need one of their parents to step up to the plate to help out.

As a lot of our coaches intend to "go again" next year, we appear well prepared already. However as we have seen in the past, job changes can quickly see us chasing helpers. Final decisions, and who is coaching which teams, are not expected to be made until early next year and we are always looking for extra assistants. We have been endeavouring for a while to get our ex juniors back involved in coaching to pass on what they have been taught and this year we had 4 take on roles. Adam Box and Bayden Maxwell took on the 16b’s and managed to make finals whilst Ash Phillips and Harry Wilks coached the 14b to ultimately win the division 5 Premiership.

Although our u18 numbers didn't reach the level we had anticipated we still had plenty of last years U16's move up this year and had ample numbers to make the 2 U18 teams with both teams again making finals. This step up is a critical time in a lot of these kid’s lives and whilst some decide to take on work opportunities instead keeping them involved in team sport I believe is of paramount importance to not only them but the whole community and will continue to be a driving force behind our decision to have multiple u18 teams.

We are still pushing strongly but waiting for the little league structure to mimic the 14’s - 18's structure, these 3 older aged structures have been described as possibly the best in Australia and it would be great to see the little league competition follow suit which will allow for a much more even competition for all. Hopefully 2015 will be that turning point. Our present junior program and structure is well over a decade old now and now it’s evolution as well as the leagues has seen many changes. From a little league level we have gone from one team per age group to 3-4 and the names of those teams were reflected in the evolution of our club and the history behind them, with teams being named, Swans, Blues and Bulldogs. This year was the time to ensure that our little leaguers were named in line with their future and whilst other clubs are coming up with all sorts of names for their little league teams in 2014 our little league teams all bore the name “SWANS”

SECTIONS OVERVIEW:

Bellaire, Roslyn and Montpellier are the schools where most of our little league players come from, and most youth players from Belmont High School, although we are seeing more and more kids from Oberon High and Christian College.

Player numbers came in at 279 with 94 u10 players across 4 teams, 71 u12 players in 3 teams, 63 u14 players in 3 teams and 51 u16 players across 2 teams

The grading structure of Geelong junior footy means that although at the start of the year it is possible for a few game to blow out, the end result is that it gives every player a great opportunity to fully develop at a rate which matches their abilities and physical growth patterns and for every team to have a chance to clock up some wins.

The advantages for those kids playing in the lower divisions by not having to go up against the bigger, stronger, top age boys ensures these kids get to continue playing footy and enjoying it. That has to be a major objective that we strive for at this level.

Now that we have the kids coming through, it’s time for some of the parents that have also come thru to get involved with helping the club with administration and sponsorships and growing this club further at all levels.

JUNIOR AGE GROUPS REPORTS:

Auskick Auskick numbers this year remained in line with previous years but this year those little South Barwon jumpers took over instead of the AFL club strips which is great to see as this club will hopefully become a pivotal part of their lives and development for the next 15 - 20 years . Theo Nicopoulos took over from Darren Meadows this year and had all the fun of arranging all those special days such as grandparents day, mothers day, hot dog day, night games and al the grid games both at Simonds Stadium and at club home games. Darren had a well earned rest this year before we fire him up again next year as we hope he will take on a coaching role with one of U10 teams next year. Special thanks to Michelle who ran the canteen week in week out.

Under 10 - Geelong Junior Football Little League - aligned teams with Under 12 Competition Swans 1, 2, 3, 4 With this year’s pre session starting on the same night as registration we were amazed to find we were starting the session off with 4 teams with a couple more players starting late in the session. We had a mixed bag of win loss success. The Swans 1’s and 2’s had more wins whilst our 3’s and 4’s team’s struggled with just a few. In the end win or loose we know the kids had fun and will remember the things they aimed for and achieved along the way. It was great to see so many parents getting involved with coaches, managers and helpers a plenty. Many of these parents have expressed how much they enjoyed the year and the operations of the club and it was great to see some of them at various functions and home games

Under 12 - Geelong Junior Football Little League Swans 1, 2, 3 We started the session with enough players for 3 teams but with extra registrations taking place in the last 5 to 6 games of the year we started to have 5 on the bench for all 3 teams. At other clubs these kids would be told to wait until next year so it speaks volumes as to the motivation of our coaches to give kids a chance to play this game that they take these kids on board and welcome them into the team as if they had been there from the start. The bottom oval was a great oval to play and train on in the first half of the session but with the rain and poor drainage on the bottom oval it became difficult. Swans 1 had a great season with only 2 losses, while teams 2 and 3 had a mix of wins and losses. The coaches enjoyed watching their players develop and sharpen their skills throughout the year. Lots of fun was had by all and great friendships were formed. The leadership shown by the coaches ensured the boys continued to develop and display great sportsmanship and maintain competitive attitudes at all times

Under 14 - Geelong Junior Football Little League Divisions 1, 5 & 7 The season started with approximately 55-58 players and coaches/players managed to recruit a few more. 62 players took the field throughout the season. Player numbers became an issue during the year with injuries and at times we were down to 18 a side, sometimes even less. The positive with this was that all boys ended up with considerable game time and this helped fast track their development. Also, as a result, a number of boys were given opportunities to player at a higher level. A successful year with all 3 teams showing considerable improvement from the start of the year. In general, parent helpers and support were adequate although when playing on the top oval and having to allocate parents to help in the canteen did create some a challenges at times. Under 1st year coaches Harry & Ash the U14-2’s lost all four grading games at the start of the season but after that only dropped a further two games to eventual Grand Finalist Torquay Nairn - by two points on both occasions. Finishing third on the ladder the boys defeated North Shore in the 1st semi final, scrapped in against Drysdale 2 with the last goal of the game with one minute on the clock in the preliminary final and for good measure did the same thing to turn the tables on Torquay on grand final day. Congratulations to Harry, Ash and all the boys on a fantastic season.

Under 16 - Geelong Junior Football Little League Divisions 1 & 4

Under 16 Preseason kicked off in February and despite a small group of players who had done some strength and speed work with myself in the offseason trying to inspire the rest of the group was a challenge for those boys. Overall it was a disappointing year for the u16 group with training attendances well below the South Barwon expectations. Numbers were down on the track and at the registration table and for the first time in a while we only fielded 2 teams. For those that showed up regularly the hard work paid off in the form of personal improvements. The A's tried valiantly for the year but with long term injuries striking our key players the task of playing in Division 1 was just that little bit above us. Using the last game of the year to not finish at the bottom of the ladder was an indication of the grit some of the boys showed but overall we were just outclassed by better opposition on to many occasions to take any big scalps for the year. The B's found themselves in division 4 and early on looked like we might be able to go all the way. A mid season slump saw ladder position pressure start to mount and in the end the boys were put out in the first week of the finals in what was some of the heaviest thickest mud we have seen in years. They might not remember the scores but I am sure the boys will remember those conditions for a long time to come...... Scott Edwards

Netball Section President's Report

2014 has certainly been an incredibly successful season again for the South Barwon Netball Club. We are thrilled to be again season 2014 Club Champion, this the 12th consecutive championship. As a club we are duly proud of this effort as collectively it rewards everyone from players, coaches, executive, team managers and supporters of South Barwon Netball.

Five premierships and 8 fantastic teams representing our club on Grand Final Day was also an excellent effort. This is an amazing reward for our club and its netball programs and we congratulate every single player within our club. Our Junior Head Coaches in Shirley Fagan and Chris Browne have been instrumental in developing a culture in which South girls can develop their netball to an elite level. Established early this sense of camaraderie and home grown talent is developed in the senior years by our wonderful experienced senior coaching panel of SaschaVeldius and Stacey Hoiles. With all teams finishing in top 5 positions across the club in every grade and division it has been our most successful season since 2009.

2014 has also seen many of our girls represent their club, the league, and their state. Congratulations must also go to Sachi-Mae Demko for her recent success in finishing runner up the D Grade League Best and Fairest. Also big congratulations to Danielle Scarbi and Ruby Horton for their terrific seasons in finishing equal third in the League Best and Fairest in A grade. Ruby Horton, was also dominant in her second year in A grade winning the A Grade Hot Shots Award. Team of the Year Selections also went to Ruby Horton and Danielle Scarbi. We can also not forget our three netballers achieving at the highest level with Madison Browne of course playing terrific netball for the Vixens and the Australian Diamonds at the Commonwealth Games, Kelsey Browne playing great netball for the Victorian Fury team and Kailah Mae Keepen representing the state in the U17 national championships.

Congratulations to Jordyn Hoiles, Jessica Johns and their All Abilities South Barwon team on winning their second consecutive Grand Final. The joy on the faces of this team representing the Swans was awesome.

A huge thank-you must go to our Club Committee in Jenny Morgan, Jenny Fagan, Beth Knuckey, Michelle Huston, John Hoiles, Melissa Hager, Lisa Barber, Carolyn Goonan, SaschaVelduis and Marli Preston. All these volunteers share one common vision, which is an immense passion for the Swannies. We also thank our terrific on- going sponsors for the season. Without their on-going support we would simply not be able to function as a club.

We also must congratulate and reflect on the wonderful efforts of our Football Club as well. Well done to the Reserves Football Team on their terrific grand final victory. Together as a club we stand very proud of our season in 2014. Go Swans!
