DON’T FORGET ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF SOUTH BARWON FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB At the Clubrooms, 10.30am, Sunday November 16, 2014 Take an interest in the future direction of the Club, ALL FINANCIAL AND LIFE MEMBERS PLEASE ATTEND President’s Report It is my pleasure to present our annual report for season 2014. For the first time since 2008 our senior football team missed playing in the finals and, whilst playing in so many consecutive finals is an amazing feat in itself, no team can afford to stop for a breather in this most competitive of competitions. Our major on field highlight this year was our brilliant reserves team going back to back to win our third reserves premiership since 1998. It was also great to see both our Colts teams taking part in September action. Quality players competing at that level can only provide huge expectations for the future. The major low light for the year occurred on 30 August when Marg Walerys, our beloved trainer, life member and friend passed away after battling a debilitating heart condition for many years. Marg had been a trainer at Barwon and South Barwon for nearly 30 years and had often said that her life revolved around her family and the football club. It was Marg's wish to have a memorial service at the clubrooms and she would have been humbled by the massive attendance. I once again extend my sympathy to Peter, Jason, Tara, Trent and Amy. Following on from our previous year's clubrooms extension project we embarked in the preseason on the long awaited kitchen upgrade. With only a small window of opportunity between mid March and mid April we were able to demolish the old kitchen and then build a modern state of the art commercial kitchen that will hopefully serve our club, and the Highton Cricket Club, for many years into the future. Once again this club is indebted to the City of Greater Geelong for providing a cash grant and regulatory guidance to enable the facility to be completed without too many hitches. From our club's perspective I would like to personally acknowledge the following people: - David Boyle who project managed the upgrade, - Chris Doak of Concept Electrics, our major sponsor, for electrical work. - Gary "Rocket" Riley for plaster work. - Craig "Spook" Douglas, Brett Cunningham, Tony Fagan and Steve Toohey for general carpentering and plumbing work. - Andrew Spina for the bricklaying work. - Geoff Wiseman, Vern Matthewson and Noel Hooley for painting the upgraded facility. - and, last but not least, Elaine Thompson and her ladies committee and canteen volunteers for their patience and understanding during a rather turbulent time. A further off field achievement this year was the replacement of a condemned light tower in the north west corner of the top oval. It is our intention to replace the remaining three wooden towers during 2015. I would like to thank all our sponsor partners for their continued support which is both generous, appreciated and critical to our ongoing success. Without your support we would not be able to continually improve our facilities, grow, develop and provide opportunities for our youth. Our sponsor partners are recognized in front of booklet. Thanks to wife Lyn and Noelene Brady for managing apparel this year. Thanks to John Darragh for organizing the Super Draw, Roger Blacksell & Geoff Wiseman for coordinating the Swans Big Bash, and again Roger for the burger tent roster and again organizing a very successful golf day. At this time I would like to acknowledge our football section. To senior coaches Warwick Knuckey and Matthew Scarlett , it certainly was a challenging year with key players retiring and a number of players on VFL lists, and our worst run with injuries for many years made selection extremely difficult As coaches you kept focused, showed strong leadership and determination and although not making the finals there are many positives you can take from this year as we look to the 2015 season. To our reserves coaches James Maas and Chris May, your back to back premiership win was a remarkable achievement. There were many weeks when our club had 15 or more players unavailable or injured, but the reserves still found a way to win. To lose only 2 games for the year speaks volumes for your leadership, commitment, never give up attitude, respect and confidence you have developed with the group over the year. To James who is retiring as reserves coach, I thank you for your many years of service and winning the premiership is just reward for you. A special thanks to all support staff. Managers, trainers, time keepers runners, water boys, everyone that helped out throughout the year. I would especially like to thank Bill McCann who is stepping aside as senior team manager. Bill’s tireless work and commitment to the senior group over many years will be sadly missed. Our club acknowledged Bill’s service to our football department a few years ago when Bill was rewarded with a life membership. Bill will still remain as historian, and I am sure will enjoy looking at the football from behind the glass. Well done Bill. I would like to thank our Colts coaches this year. Colts A coaches Ben Holz and Shaun Taylor with manager Roger Box and Colts B coach Daniel Chittenden and manager Simon Hogan for their contribution and support this year.
