(212) 963-5495 - FAX (212) 963-1185 26 March 1998 Dear Maestro Gamba, As the Secretary-General is overseas on official travel, I write to thank you for your kind letter of 23 March 1998 with information on your Concert scheduled for 26 October 1998. It is wonderful to know of this performance. I thank you for your positive response to my reference to the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR50) this year and the participation of many orchestras around the world in saluting Human Rights. We would be most pleased if you would refer to your Concert as a performance to support Human Rights and include in your programme an insert on this subject. (Copy attached from a recent performance in Geneva.) I will convey your request for Patronage to the Secretary-General upon his return, as well as the recording of your historic Concert of 1979. As I mentioned, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Luciano Pavarotti, Harry Belafonte and Marta Istomin, all listed among your Board or Honorary Members, have expressed support and interest in the United Nations in recent months. In particular, Lord Menuhin is a long and dear friend of the Secretary-General. Thank you and all good wishes. 'ours sincerely, Gillian Martin Sorensen Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations Maestro Piero Gamba President Symphonicum Europae 866 United Nations Plaza New York, NY 10017 iiZ JT.-IA.
