If you are anything like us here at Arrowhead, you may already be thinking about summer . As the cold winter is upon us, we often dream of the warmth of summer and the good we have had at Arrowhead Day Camp. We look forward to the good times ahead at Arrowhead but as we get ready for our 65th, we would be remised if we didn’t look back at our past.

Arrowhead was started by Alfred Gilbert, my grandfather, in 1956. He was a gym teacher who wanted to start a camp to fill his summer time. He had a vision where kids from the city could come out and experience the country, at that time, and have a wonderful place to mature, grow and enjoy the great outdoors. Although he was not successful right away, and through many trials and tribulations, Big Al, as he was fondly know as, developed Arrowhead into one of the premier camps in the area. We now have 3rd generation Arrowheaders here, and everyone who comes to visit from years past, always tells stories of him and what an amazing director and man he was.

We lost Al this fall on September 11th. For anyone that knew him, he was someone that instantly lit up a room, made you feel comfortable no matter what situation you were in and genuinely cared about everyone, his staff, parents and especially campers, in a very sincere and loving way. His hard work and dedication is what Arrowhead is built on. His family and Arrowhead were his two biggest passions in life and even at the age of 90, he still wanted to know what was going on each day.

This 65th summer I am dedicating to him. He is the husband, father and camp director that I strive to be each day. I hope that I am able to lead Arrowhead with his wisdom, devotion and enthusiasm each day, like he was able to do, for the next 65 years.

Yours for better camping-

Uncle Brian Witt

6th Annual AL GILBERT Commemorative Founder's Award

To the senior campers who best represent what ARROWHEAD is all about. The nominees this summer were:

EAGLES: Charlie Spahr EMERALDS: Emily Albert PHILLIES: Ben Shubert OPALS: Samantha Gittens FLYERS: Daniel Mazzio PEARLS: Angelica Todd SIXERS: Noah Porter SAPPHIRES: Molly Rosenthal

And the WINNER was…. Noah Porter of the SIXERS for his exemplary campership; his essay below was judged the best by our directors.

QUESTION # 1): What does ARROWHEAD mean to me? During the school year I am reluctant to wake up in the morning. During the summer, however, I hop out of bed with an explosive vigor, knowing that I will soon get to see all of my friends and do loads of fun activities. Arrowhead means a lot of things to me. I get excited at the mention of its name. It’s the camp that raised me and helped me grow as a person. Arrowhead means fun, it means strengthened bonds, and quite frankly, to me it means home.

QUESTION # 2): What can I do to make ARROWHEAD a better camp? It takes almost nothing to make someone smile. The improvements I’m talking about are nothing physical. Arrowhead is already perfect in that aspect. If we all compliment our friends and reach out to our acquaintances, Arrowhead will become one big family. Next time you see a friend, say “hey, I like your hair,” or “nice kick dude!” It feels like heaven when you get a compliment. Making people smile makes me smile, and I am sure you feel the same way. But, in every other sense, Arrowhead is perfect. The counselors are caring, the activities are fun, and the property is always vibrant and green. I love this camp beyond words, and it is truly my home.

OUR SINCEREST CONGRATULATIONS TO NOAH! WE ARE ALL EXTREMELY PROUD OF THIS SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENT!

COLOR WAR

What do we love about the 7th week of camp? Besides the obvious things that happen all summer long….. COLOR WAR! Color War at ARROWHEAD is always an exciting week as our Kings and Queens are chosen and our bunks are split down the middle for a fun competitive week at camp! This summer was no different, and our Color War break was amazing! The kids were all excited to see what team they would be on, and what the theme for the year would be. The summer of 2019 brought in the ice and cold as THE came to battle the sun and the heat of THE JUNGLE. Competition was fierce all week long, with the scores being close (and even tied at one point in the week). As good battles usually go, it all came down to the song fest on the final day of Color War. Even the Song Fest was a close finish, with the teams earning scores so close that I had to count and recount just to be sure. In the end, THE JUNGLE GREEN TEAM reigned supreme. It was a great week, ending with Chief Arrowhead bringing peace back to the grounds with the ceremonial breaking of the arrow. I can’t wait to see what the summer of 2020 will bring! 2019 Kings & Queens GREEN: WHITE: QUEEN: Dani Conroy QUEEN: Erin Hill KING: Alex Chambers KING: Andrew Wald

Native American Day

Junior Campers enjoyed an Arrowhead tradition of Native American day the 7th week of camp this year. Arrowhead staff members helped the campers make necklaces & feather headdresses, had their faces painted, and played Native America Games. Chief Arrowhead came by juggling, telling Native American stories, and making campers smile and laugh. After Chief Arrowhead left, each bunk participated in a parade, where they showed off their unique Native American poster. Everyone had a great time!

MTV DAY

There was a change of venue, but not a change in the excitement of MTV Day. For the first time in several years, MTV Day was held in the Stadium. However, the results were the same with the Sapphires capturing first place. Once again, the competition and dances were excellent and the Senior girls gave their all. Congratulations to all the performers.

Road Runner Race

During the seventh week of camp, we held our annual Road Runner Race. The fastest campers from each bunk were chosen to put on their “track shoes” and run against other competitors in their same age group. It was a beautiful day for a race, and everyone participating did a great job! Special thanks to the counselors who ran in the counselor race.

PENTATHLON

Once again, the Pentathlon proved to be one of the highlights of the end of the summer. The Pentathlon is a true test to even the most well tuned athletes. The competition includes a series of events...swimming, running and boating. The participants began their journey at Uncle Dave's pool where they swam two laps. They then ran towards the lake and competed on the canoe course. Once the boats docked the participants then ran to Uncle Joel’s Archery range to compete before the winner was decided at Uncle Rob's Marksmanship range. As usual, the races were unbelievably close and a big congratulation goes out to all of the competitors for a job well done!
