The world of nations comes into existence according to a planfulness that is similar to the incarnation of an individual soul. Thus, a nation is conceived as idea, is born, carries its own vibration upon the earth, and endeavors within the limits of its consciousness to fulfill the blueprint for its own creation. Each national identity that is conceived develops first as an idea in the Mind of God. It is not accidental according to the historical trends of a culture or civilization. Rather, the entire global harmonic and vibration of the earth is composed, in part, of the individual vibrations of national entities whose purposes, when held in light, contribute to the overall wellbeing of the planet. Nations, like individuals, can depart from their sacred purpose. They can misrepresent the ideals that they have come into being to fulfill. And whether there is more on the side of light and of the fulfillment of Divine expectations that is expressed through that nation's policies and actions, or more on the side of darkness and self-seeking which takes a nation out of the global Destiny of the Nations and more into its own sphere of self-interest, is a choice that individual governments, peoples, and societies make over time. The current situation related to national identity is one that is very precarious based on the intrusive presence of those who would seek to influence the national identity of other nations. -

It is with a solemnized feeling that I enter on these Reminiscences. page 1 / 646 Except one, I have survived all the associates of my earlier days. The young, with a long life in perspective, (if any life can be called long, in so brief an existence) are unable to realize the impressions of a man, nearer eighty than seventy, when the shadows of evening are gathering around, and, in a retrospective glance, the whole field of past vision appears, in all its complexities, like the indistinct tumults of a dream. The acute reasoner--the fiery politician--the eager polemic--the emulous aspirant after fame; and many such have I known, where are they? and how mournful, if any one of them should be found, at last, to have directed his solicitudes, alone, to material objects;--should have neglected to cultivate his own little plot of earth, more valuable than mines! and have sown no seeds for eternity. It is not a light motive which could have prompted me, when this world of "Eye and Ear" is fast receding, while grander scenes are opening, and so near! to call up almost long-forgotten associations, and to dwell on the stirring, by-gone occurrences that tend, in some measure, to interfere with that calm which is most desirable, and best accords with the feelings of one who holds life by such slender ties. -

It may not be sold. Introduction Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born in 1772 in Devon, the youngest of ten children. His father, a vicar and headmaster, died when Samuel was eight, and he was sent to a charity school in London, Christ’s Hospital, where he became friendly with the writer Charles Lamb. He went on to study at Jesus College, Cambridge, and became interested in radical politics. Along with the poet Robert Southey, he planned a commune in New England under a scheme they called ‘Pantisocracy’. The friends married two sisters, but then fell out with each other. Coleridge moved to Somerset, where his wife Sara (nee Fricker) bore the first of their four children, Hartley, in 1796. The following year Coleridge met William Wordsworth, beginning a friendship and collaboration that was to shape the lives and work of each. Coleridge had already published a number of poems, but now began to write some of his best- known works, including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This was published in Lyrical Ballads (1798) – a collection of works by both poets that proved to be a seminal point in literary Romanticism. After a spell in Germany, Coleridge moved to the Lake District, as did the Wordsworths. However, by this time his marriage was in trouble, and he was becoming increasingly addicted to laudanum, an opiate drug, which he seems to have taken for neuralgia and depression. -

MAYS University College Dublin THE LAST ATTEMPT TO COLLECT Coleridge’s poetical writing, plays as well as poems, was in 1912. The 1912 edition, edited by Ernest Hartley Coleridge for the Clarendon Press,1 proved remarkably durable but mistakes and omissions have become evident; also, expectations con- cerning the way poetry texts should be presented have altered in the intervening years. In EHC’s edition, the poems were arranged in two categories: Volume I was made up of a main sequence of serious and achieved poems, and Volume II contained sequences of different sub- canonical forms and levels of achievement (epigrams, jeux d’esprit, metrical experiments, drafts and fragments). The effect of the divided arrangement was to relegate Volume II material to a category where it appeared extra, optional, ignorable. The less literary and the less finished were bundled away and excluded, the implication being that there are higher and lower levels of poetic activity and those which fail to preserve decent poetic reputation are best ignored. The old edition was put together at a time when poetry aimed to be poetic in a late nineteenth-century, high serious or at least magical kind of way, and times have changed. The canonical/non- canonical separation is nowadays more contentious than helpful, and the poems in the forthcoming new edition are therefore arranged in a unified chronological sequence. Robert Southey An intimate of Coleridge and Wordsworth, and their neighbor at Keswick, Robert Southey (1774-1843) merits the title of "Lake mb. Poet," but being also prolix and prolific, he remains forever saddled l- with the Byronic rhyming epithet of "mouthey"; never collected, his writings would fill upwards of one hundred volumes. His longer poems, though little read today, earned the admiration of uch contemporaries as diverse as Scott, Shelley, and Macaulay. His prose, which evidences an unexpected simplicity and frankness, ater impressed even Byron as "perfect." ge Born in Bristol, Southey attended London's Westminster School, where he roomed with Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, a lifelong friend and a future Member of Parliament. -

John C. Cole ridge, of Devonshire, England (Ouery St. Mary), Head master of the Grammar School, was, from the first, a ehar acter of unique and even eccentric interest. As he says of his own boyhood, "I never thought as a child, never had the language of a child." As a mere lad, he was inquisi tive as to the nature and reasons of things, speculative and imaginative, cogitating or dreaming when his companions were playing. At school at "Christ's Hospital," we find him at Cam bridge, in 1791, which university, for some unexplained reason, he suddenly left, enlisting as a private in the Fif· teenth Light Dragoons, returning, however, to Cambridge in April, 1794- In 1795, he entered on the r6le of a lec turer at Bristol, a city of importance in the history of Cole ridge, as it was there he met Southey, whom he had seen at Oxford, and Lovell, the publisher, which two married sisters of the lady, Miss Fricker, whom Coleridge was yet to marry. His lectures, "Conciones ad Populum," as they were called, were designed to be popular, political discus sions, in the service of what he deemed to be the rights and liberties of the people. Summary: The Poem “Kubla Khan,” one of the most famous and most analyzed English poems, is a fifty-four-line lyric in three verse paragraphs. In the opening paragraph, the title character decrees that a “stately pleasure-dome” be built in Xanadu. Although numerous commentators have striven to find sources for the place names used here by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, there is no critical consensus about the origins or meanings of these names. The real-life Kubla Khan, a thirteenth century Mongolian general and statesman who conquered and unified China, lived in an elaborate residence known as K’ai-p’ing, or Shang-tu, in southeastern Mongolia. Coleridge’s Kubla has his palace constructed where Alph, “the sacred river,” begins its journey to the sea. The construction of the palace on “twice five miles of fertile ground” is described. It is surrounded by walls and towers within which are ancient forests and ornate gardens “bright with sinuous rills.” Xanadu is described more romantically in the second stanza. It becomes “A savage place! as holy and enchanted/ As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted/ By woman wailing for her demon-lover!” It is inhabited not by Kubla’s family and followers, but by images from Coleridge’s imagination. -
