Carefully select your coffee! Of course your coffee has to taste great, but it's equally important that it has been farmed without causing a negative impact on people or the environment. You’ll strive to have the highest quality service as well as look for inspiration to continue to develop your coffee knowledge and offering. So, there's quite a lot to think about when selecting a coffee supplier!

We are always thinking about how we can help you in the best way possible.

Our passion for good coffee has been with us for more than a hundred years. We purchase all our coffee directly from the producing countries; from carefully selected coffee farmers all around the world. We sample everything, several times over, to guarantee that we get the flavours and qualities we are looking for.

Taking responsibility for people and the environment is part of everything we do, in the producing countries as well as at home. Did you know that our entire assortment is certified and that we are one of the world’s largest purchasers of organic and Fairtrade labelled coffee? It means that you can always be sure that our coffee both tastes and does good. Naturally, we are working to improve many other things too, for example by developing new climate-smart packaging.

Developing new and exciting products is also close to our hearts. We listen, watch and learn to contribute to the development of the coffee scene. One of the hottest trends right now is cold beverages. We have an exciting assortment of ice coffee, cold brew coffee and caffeine water. Good to drink just as they are, but also great for making interesting coffee- based drinks. We’d love to give you some tips!

Having worked with coffee for more than a hundred years, we have learned a great deal. We want to share that knowledge. Whether you want to learn more about coffee and how it is farmed, or if you want to be a fully fledged , we offer trainings on site or at our training facilities all over Sweden. We also have a digital tool – Löfbergs E-Academy – which offers distance learning.

There's many different aspects which will determine how satisfied your customers will be. Make life easy for yourself and consider Löfbergs. Carefully select your coffee – just as we do.

5 From bean to cup

6 FROM BEAN TO CUP FROM BEAN TO CUP New plants Seedlings need to be treated with care as they’re very sensitive to the sun and also susceptible to diseases. One tree produces around half a kilo of roasted coffee.

Plantation After about six months, the plants are set out in the nursery before being moved to the plantation. Coffee trees produce the most cherries after 7-8 years.

Harvest The cherries are often harvested by hand before being processed using the wet or dry method, depending on conditions and flavour preferences.

Tasting We taste the beans before, and after, purchase. In our tasting lab in Karlstad, we taste around 400 cups per day to guarantee quality.

Transport The coffee is transported from the producing country by boat, and then all the way to our roasting house by train. With bulk cargo, we can reduce the number of transportations per year.

Blend The green coffee is stored in sacks or silos until use. A coffee blend can consist of 5-6 different coffee sorts, depending on the season and desired flavour.

Roasting The green coffee is heated to around 200°C in large roasting machines, during which the aromas of the coffee develop.

To customer To minimize our impact on the environment, we often co-ordinate deliveries with wholesalers and deliveries to big storage terminals.

Preparation Remember that coffee is sensitive to oxygen once you’ve opened the package. Always use fresh cold water and dose about 60g for every litre of water used.

Coffee You can now enjoy a beautiful cup of coffee! Why not be adventurous and try new blends, roasts and brewing methods to find your favourite?

FROM BEAN TO CUP 7 ”We never compromise on great flavour yet it’s also important to us that coffee is farmed fairly. That is why our entire range has at least one sustainability certification.” MARTIN LÖFBERG

Löfbergs Flavour Wheel

The interest in coffee and its flavours is growing. To make it easier for those of you who want to put the experience into words, our coffee expert Anna Nordström has designed a unique flavour wheel that is specifically relevant to our range.

The flavour wheel helps you find the coffee’s primary flavours, undertones and characteristics. It is based on an international standard created by the Speciality Coffee Association.

PROFESSIONAL 19 For the next generation of coffee lovers

Climate-smarter packaging from renewable resources

With more than 320 million tonnes of plastic produced every year in the world, an incredible 40% is used for packaging. Alarmingly, almost all plastic consists of fossil resources, which means the more plastic we use, the greater the carbon footprint. It simply cannot go on like this, which is why all our packaging will be made from 100% recycled or renewable materials by 2030.

We started replacing the fossil plastic in our packaging with a plant-based alternative: plastic from sugar canes.

The material is recyclable, renewable and has the same protective properties as fossil plastic. The coffee will taste just as good as before, perhaps even better.

Through using this incredibly climate-smart solution, our packaging’s environmental impact will be reduced by up to 34%.

20 PROFESSIONAL Our sustainable packaging journey

In 1993, we became the first in Europe to remove aluminium from coffee packaging – a bold and forward-thinking step in the 1990s. Since then, we’ve continued to explore and develop climate- smart packaging, and are proud to announce that:

By 2020, all our packaging will contain plastic from renewable resources. By 2030, all our packaging will be made from 100% recycled or renewable materials.

The first in Europe to remove aluminium 1993 from coffee packaging.

Cut down from three to two layers 1998 of plastic laminate.

The launch of ICE Coffee in a CartoCan – 2015 a recyclable can made of cardboard.

The first in Sweden to develop compostable 2016 capsules for Nespresso®* machines.

Start phasing out fossil plastic 2018 and replacing it with plastic from renewable resources.

* Nespresso® is a registered brand from a third party and has no collaboration with AB Anders Löfberg.

PROFESSIONAL 27 SPECIALITY COFFEE Speciality coffee Speciality coffee is the most exclusive in our Out of Home selection. For a coffee to qualify and be part of the range it has to have a remarkable taste, be traceable to its origin, and brought to life with an intriguing and interesting story.

A speciality coffee comes from beans which have been grown under perfect conditions. They are picked, washed and dried using the selected methods with care. This gives the coffee a unique, distinctive personality and characteristic flavour, which is then highlighted by balanced roasting and perfect brewing. Speciality coffee can always be traced back to a specific region or farm. Notably, some are of single origin, which means that the coffee comes from the same district. Single estate coffee means they come from the same farm.

40 Anna Nordström –with a license to trend spot She is one of the greatest coffee experts in Europe and has won medals at the Swedish Cupping Championship and the World Cup Tasters Championship. By day, she is working as a Speciality Coffee Manager at the coffee roaster Löfbergs, where she has to know the latest in the coffee world. Here are Anna Norström’s thoughts about the hottest trends right now.

First of all, what do you do to keep track of everything that happens in the coffee world? I get input and inspiration from many different places. Naturally when I meet others who work with coffee, and when I travel. I also spend time on different online forums, where I follow everyone from individual to large coffee organizations. When I find something really exciting I often want to try it myself at one of our coffee bars. The last time that happened I tried hopped Cold Brew – it was really good!

What will characterize the coffee year of 2019? There will be less fuss and stereotypes, more diversity and authenticity. You do not need a beard and tattoos; everyone is truly welcome in the coffee world no matter your gender, origin, sexual preference or anything else. Cold beverages will continue to be hot, and the science will continue to increase. We measure, weigh and control the water, the coffee and the equipment to a greater extent in our pursuit of the perfect cup.

Three things you cannot miss if you want to be really trendy? So many exciting things are happening, but if I have to choose three trends I want to highlight:

1. Cold coffee 2. Smart machines 3. Stop wasting!

SPECIALITY COFFEE 43 44 NEXT GENERATION COFFEE NEXT GENERATION COFFEE Next Generation Coffee is an initiative to support young and passionate coffee farmers. For and by the next generation of coffee lovers.

Good coffee is not a certainty when the climate is changing and even fewer young people see a future as a coffee farmer. We want to change that. When we meet coffee farmers in remote mountain slopes all over the world, we see the glow, the commitment and the passion. But we also see that there are quite a few challenges. 1. We improve the development possibilities for the next generation of coffee farmers 2. through education, direct trade and close cooperation. To make the young generation see a positive future in coffee farming. At the same time we are securing access to really good coffee in the future.

Why do we need NGC?

- Climate change and the next generation of coffee farmers are the greatest challenges for securing really good quality coffee for the future. -- Today, the average age among the world’s coffee farmers is 60 years. -- Fewer young people see a future in coffee. -- There are 20 million coffee farmers, and coffee supports 125 million people all over the world. -- Two-thirds of the world’s farms are small-scale family farms. -- If the young farmers disappear, the large-scale farms will be the alternative. That would lead to qualities and unique flavours disappearing.

ƒ Ana Maria Zapata Palacico, 25, is one of the participants in our initiative for the next generation of coffee farmers in Colombia. She lives together with her husband and her mother.

„ 1. Ikupa and Amani from Igale, Tanzania, got some land to farm coffee on from Amani’s grandfather. They have doubled their production since then. ”Tell your friends to drink more coffee, then our lives will be even better!”

„ 2. Ana Maria started working as a coffee picker seven or eight years ago. With the money she made, she purchased land to start farming coffee. She has used her surplus to buy even more land. Today, she owns a total of 15 acres.
