Contents: Vision and mission Living in the Diocese Housing and money Ministry together Lifelong learning Spiritual sustenance York Minster Central support Young people Who’s who “We will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:14 & 15 Vision and mission We have a vision of Generous Churches Making and Nurturing Disciples. “We will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:14 & 15 As a Diocese, we want to see our churches making disciples of all ages. We want to see mutual resourcing to build up the Body of Christ, to grow in five areas: • Christ-likeness Becoming like Christ is the fundamental call of Christian discipleship. It is not always easy to assess, but we often recognise the flavour of a life becoming more godly. • Commitment Commitment itself has several features, including: commitment to God, to seeking God’s kingdom, to Christ’s body the Church. • Partnership Working with other churches, locally and globally, with schools, community groups, people, organisations for the common good, peace, justice and a healthy environment.

  • Diocese in Europe Prayer Diary, July to December 2011
DIOCESE IN EUROPE PRAYER DIARY, JULY TO DECEMBER 2011 This calendar has been compiled to help us to pray together for one another and for our common concerns. Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery. We also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, www.aco.org), the World Council of Churches prayer cycle (weekly, www.oikoumene.org, prayer resources on site), the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, www.porvoochurches.org), and festivals and commemorations from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx). Sundays and Festivals, printed in bold type, have special readings in the Common Worship Lectionary. Lesser Festivals, printed in normal type, have collects in the Common Worship Lectionary. Commemorations, printed in italics, may have collects in Exciting Holiness, and additional, non- biblical, readings for all of these may be found in Celebrating the Saints (both SCM-Canterbury Press).

  • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. The Outrageous Hospitality of God Sabbatical Thoughts 201213 The Rev’d Rob Wickham THE OUTRAGEOUS HOSPITALITY OF GOD A theology of our church buildings, and their use in mission. Sabbatical musings by The Rev’d Rob Wickham MA The Rector of Hackney November 2012 January 2013 1 The Outrageous Hospitality of God Sabbatical Thoughts 201213 The Rev’d Rob Wickham The Outrageous Hospitality of God. Setting the Scene I remember very vividly visiting St Albans Abbey in the run up to Christmas in 2010. We were walking through the great nave of this imposing and very beautiful building dedicated to the greater glory and steadfastness of God majestic and awe inspiring. We took our children, who were then the ages of 6 and 3, as we felt that such a space could speak to them of the impact of God in the midst of a busy preChristmas shopping area. We spoke to them about the importance of remaining quiet in this space, and to respect the wider silence and atmosphere of prayer which seemed to exude all around an attitude which they respected in the way in which only three and six years olds can. Then to our horror, as we walked slowly down the nave, some middle aged woman in pearls, who was sitting on some makeshift stage prior to beginning a choral rehearsal, turned and very loudly told our children to shush! This was not however the welcome which we expected, and it did make me feel somewhat irritated. It did not reflect something of God’s call of everybody is welcome, and that these buildings might, just might, be about a desire for human flourishing, for He came that we might have life in all its fullness.
