Toward fall I get very rootsy with kd lang, Neil Young, and Tom Petty; winter gets more morose with Casey Stratton, David Sylvian, Tori Amos and Damien Rice; while spring brings Pet Shop Boys, Saint Ettienne and Girl Talk. Then summer comes with a sound all its own. Currently I’m sitting here writing this loading all three Deee-lite albums into my iPod and chair dancing to NORTH END “Picnic in the Summertime.” Deee-lite, way due for a It’s a package deal. Photos by Kirk reunion/comeback, are the overlords of happy beats from the ‘90s. They ruled the gay clubs at the tail end of the ‘80s and into 1990 with “Groove Is In the Heart,” off World Clique, but then never really captured that same vibe again. Luckily we have others from that era just as joyous: Cece Peniston, Soul II Soul and Betty Boo all come to mind. Or if you need to get more current, get The Gossip’s Beth Ditto’s EP or the new full-length by Hercules + Love Affair, who’ve both made incredible homages to that house sound recently. We’re gay, so dance music is our go-to for summer tunes, but also consider getting sexy with some Sade or Tracey Thorn as well. They are, in my book, the two best vocalists of our time and both just take you away on a small cumulus cloud of joy with anything they do. Finally, if rolling down the windows and cruising boys is your thing, Sade may not work. Give them something that says butch cool like Def Leppard’s Pyromania album (the only real Def Lep CD) or De La Soul’s classic hip hop masterpiece 3 Feet High and Rising. Both have great speaker power and say, “He might be straight; I bet I can have him though.” Whatever your groove is, make sure you groove responsibly and with many, many others. Summer music is all about getting it on with others, just like life. Come check Moose’s grooves at two new gigs at Downtown Bar and The Glenwood this summer. 10 nightspots July 20, 2011 .5 +00%!.)+10$ Karaoke by Creagh MON TUES WED Welcome WED WED back! His electronic music made him a Platinum performer with the hit single “Fireflies” on the album Ocean Eyes. His new record, All Things Bright and Beautiful, continues that trend and brings him back to Chicago this month. Nightspots Magazine: Hi, Adam. Do people call you Adam or Owl? Adam Young: My parents call me “Bugs,” my friends call me Adam and my fans call me “Hey dude” or “Excuse me, Mr. Owl Man.” NM: Where did the name Owl City get its start? AY: A great question. My sister once had a pet owl when she was in 5th grade and it got loose in her Sunday school room at church. Somehow the poor bird found its way into the air ducts and ultimately wound up flapping around the ceiling of the sanctuary during old Pastor Anderson’s epic sermon. People cheered and clapped until the owl got tired and landed on a pew back where my Dad took a flying football leap over four rows of pews and made an amazing tackle. It was just one of those priceless memories that has never left me. NM: Your music grew out of Myspace.com? AY: I happened to be in the right place at the right time when Myspace.com was booming and labels suddenly started calling and everything just kind of happened. It was pretty surreal for someone who never expected or necessarily wanted musical success. NM: Were you musically inclined growing up? AY: I was more of a skateboard guy. That was my dream. Out of boredom, I mowed lawns all summer and bought my first synth and that’s what ultimately kindled my passionate love for creativity. NM: Do you like doing movie projects such as Alice in Wonderland or Legends of the Guardians? AY: I absolutely adore them and it’s always been my dream to have a hand in the composition/recording/editing of film scores. Working in film is where I want to end up someday whenever the electronic pop thing ceases to amuse me. NM: What inspired the new album? AY: My imagination played the biggest role. I grew up an only child so I had to invent my own entertainment and ways to keep busy. That carried over into music writing and so I merely just let my imagination run wild. There are some quirky things in the new record that even I don’t know where they came from.

Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, its Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (later the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame (changed to the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 2015) in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. House Dance incorporates movements from many other sources such as: capoeira, tap, jazz, bebop, salsa, hip-hop, breaking etc. It includes a variety of techniques and sub-styles such as: skating, stomping, and shuffling. There are three basic constituents which lie in the basis of House: Jacking, Footwork and Lofting. Some of the following are the basic steps for the dance style House: Jacking – The original style of House Dance; jacking comes from Chicago. Jacking involves moving the torso forward and backward in a rippling motion, as if a wave were passing through it. This movement is repeated and sped up to match the beat of a song. This technique is considered the most important movement in House dancing because it is the foundation that initiates more complex movements and footwork. Lofting – The oldest of the House styles; it refers to the acrobatic floor-work, similar to break dance but much softer, fluid and sensual. Lofting is all about being smooth and controlled.

In a somewhat obscure gay marriage case in California, the U.S. Department of Justice sub- mitted a brief June 11 that many LGBT activists Along are decrying as a betrayal of President Barack Obama’s promise to work to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). And yet a prominent, widely respected con- Queer stitutional law professor urges caution, arguing Bronzeville page 7 that the particular lawsuit that triggered this latest controversy is “extremely vulnerable” on a number of legal grounds. The case is Smelt v. U.S., one that has been brewing since 2004 and which gay legal activists openly criticized as premature and ill-conceived at the time.
