This paper sets out: o This changing pattern and the leading role of Cairns and the Cairns region in this changing pattern; o Why this consistent pattern of change has been happening over a period of time; and o On a continuation of these long-term trends, what regional population in Queensland would look like by 2050. Realities of distances lead to the area being served by a series of regional capitals with distinct commercial servicing regions. Map 1 shows these regional capitals and the commercial regions they serve. In the case of Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Toowoomba, the regional capitals and their commercial servicing areas are fairly clear. Although Rockhampton is the regional capital of the Fitzroy and Central West region, unlike Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, the region’s port is not located at the city, but 100km away at Gladstone. -

West Mackay Growth Profile
West Mackay Growth Profile West Mackay is part of the traditional lands of the Yuwibara people. West Mackay developed along the Bruce Highway as the main transport axis into Mackay. Notable early developments include a government sugar nursery built in 1890 near the lagoons (now the Mackay Botanic Gardens), later replaced by a Sugar Experimental Station in 1898 and the Queensland Heritage listed Sugar Research Institute in 1953 designed by prominent architect Karl Langer. Additionally, the Mackay District Hospital (now the Mackay Base Hospital) was built in 1885 and underwent a series of major expansions in the 1920’s, 1980 and a major redevelopment to its current modern standard between 2010 to 2014. Outlook If current housing trends continue an increase in higher density dwellings and supporting rental housing for local residents. The ageing population trend is anticipated to lead to a greater concentration of empty nesters/retirees in West Mackay. Growth is driven by densification of housing in an older character neighbourhood in close proximity to local employment. Health is anticipated to continue to be a main employer with the location of the Mackay Base Hospital in West Mackay. Duaringa Basin Report on Hydrological Investigations 4.0 Overview of the Regional Surface and Subsurface Geology of the Duaringa Basin 4.1 Introduction The surface geology of the Duaringa Basin project site and surrounding environment is characterised by the surface exposures of the Tertiary age Duaringa Formation sediments and surrounding exposures of the Permian age sediments (Figure 4.1). The Duaringa Formation is composed of interbedded mudstones, shale, oil shale siltstone and lignite beds and rare sandstone, conglomerate and basalt beds (Day et al., 1983). The Permian age sediments are part of the Bowen Basin stratigraphic sequence. The overlying Tertiary age Duaringa Formation does not form part of the formal Bowen Basin stratigraphic sequence. The surface exposures of the Duaringa Formation can be differentiated into recent exposures and older lateritic tablelands. There are also some small outcrops of Tertiary age volcanics exposed through the Tertiary age and Permian age sediments present in and near the Duaringa Basin. The significant rivers, such as the Mackenzie River and Dawson River, which traverse the Duaringa Basin, have deposited large volumes of alluvial sediment in broad braided plains on both the Duaringa Formation and Permian age sediments. The Duaringa Basin along with the Biloela Basin and Hillsborough Basin formed during the opening of the Coral Sea during the Eocene between 52 and 34 million years ago (SRK, 2008). These basins are bounded by NE to SW trending bounding faults along their western margins. Movement along these faults is largely sinistal (left lateral). However, there has been significant downward movement on the eastern side of the fault blocks, which has opened deep asymmetrical grabens (Veevers and Powell, 1994). -

Dzatorb a Central Queensland University, Mackay; b The University of Newcastle, NSW Email: [email protected] Abstract: The provision of efficient and effective emergency service such as ambulance service is a task faced by most cities and major regional centres. The emergency medical service is very necessary and plays a vital role in reducing death or serious complication from life threatening health incident. Over the years, there have been several major initiatives to improve the access to and quality of emergency care in Queensland. In 2009-2010, public hospital Emergency Departments (ED) in Australia covered about 7.4 million emergency cases of which there were over 3 million ambulance incidents. Mackay is a regional city in Queensland, Australia’s east coast. The Mackay Metropolitan which comprises of 24 suburbs is prone to natural disasters such as cyclones and flood. The Mackay region depends highly on emergency services especially during disasters. The current ambulance locations in the Mackay Local Ambulance Service Network (LASN) are significantly underperforming with regard to not meeting the target response time according to Queensland 2014 ambulance report. Early response to emergency calls is important and crucial for human survival. The response time is a function of the distance between the emergency facility and emergency demand. It is therefore important to locate emergency facility such that the distance to be travelled by an ambulance in response to emergency call is minimized.
