Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Transmedia Muppets: The Possibilities of Performer Narratives AARON CALBREATH-FRASIEUR, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT This article examines how the Muppets franchise engages with transmedia narratives, their stories moving fluidly between television, film, comics, the internet and more. Rather than highlight the complexity Henry Jenkins (2006), Elizabeth Evans (2011) and others associate with transmedia, an examination of the Muppets offers insight into a mechanism that allows for simpler coherent connection between texts. The Muppets’ ongoing performer narrative challenges the prevailing understanding of transmedia storytelling. As performative characters (singers, actors, performance artists), any text concerned with Muppets, even those in which they act as other characters, becomes part of an overarching Muppet narrative. A high degree of self-reflexivity further supports transmediality, as most Muppet texts contain references to that text as a performance by the Muppets. Thus the comic Muppet Robin Hood and the film Muppet Treasure Island continue the story of the Muppets as further insight is gained into the characters' personalities and ongoing performance history. Examining different iterations of the Muppets franchise illuminates the ramifications of performer narratives for transmedia storytelling. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, franchise, narrative, Muppets, multi-platform For over fifty-five years the Muppets have been appearing in media texts. They began on local television but have spread across most contemporary mediums, with many of these texts part of the over-arching, ongoing Muppet story. This article explores an alternative framework for defining one form of transmedia storytelling. This model suggests a complication in the understanding of transmedia storytelling put forward by Henry Jenkins (2006) and Elizabeth Evans (2011). -

It was amazing, and I want to thank so many people for coming out and supporting the event, and supporting all of these great guests we had, and some of the wonderful topics that we got to explore together this weekend. Now in sadder news Star Trek original series actor Bruce Hyde has recently passed from throat cancer. For those of you who don't remember him he was and he was, I want to say Ensign, Kevin Riley. And I wanted to bring him up because I love the fact that he's just an incidental feminist in one of the few drunken throwaway lines he gets. He walks into a room sees all the girls at the control panels and goes “Yeah, this is what I like to see! Women getting to work too!” *Sue laughs* And then he gets drunk and hijacks the com system and starts singing Take Me Home Again Kathleen. -
68, the first Suck of 2018, John Wayne Gacy!
Cold Open: On the afternoon of December 21st, 1978, a half-dozen Chicago investigators, armed with a fresh search warrant, made their way down into the crawlspace beneath the home of John Wayne Gacy, at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago. Officer Daniel Genty made his way, crawling along his stomach, to a spot underneath Gacy’s kitchen where he saw what looked like human hair sticking out of the ground. Shining a floodlight on the area, he saw a long depression that looked like a dry lake bed with cracks in the yellow gray covering of a layer of lime that Gacy had put over the entire surface of the dirt beneath the home. Genty popped an entrenching tool into the ground and after two shovelfuls of dirt, he hit some whitish bits of soap-like material. It was adipocere (“Add-i-pah-sear”) flesh - body tissue that has chemically changed to a lard like substance due to rot and moisture. The crawlspace smelled like a sewer. Genty dug further and hit bone. An arm bone. Definitely human. There were more hair strands on his little shovel. Genty turned towards some other officers poking their heads through the crawlspace access door. “Charge him,” he said. “I’ve found one.” Within minutes, Gacy was in police custody, charged on suspicion of murder. The body Genty had began to uncover was the first of what would be 28 corpses that would be removed from underneath his home. We tend to like it dark here in the Suck, and it’s hard to get darker than this week’s Gacy. -

As the fanfare -- whistled, as if by Walter -- crescendos, we hear STATLER (V.O.) Well, we can go home now. WALDORF (V.O.) But the movie's just starting! STATLER (V.O.) Yeah, but we've already seen the best part! WALDORF (V.O.) I thought the best part was the end credits! They CHORTLE as the credits FADE TO BLACK A familiar voice -- one we've heard many times before, and will hear again later in the movie... MR. EXCELSIOR (V.O.) And lo, there came a day like no other, when the unlikeliest of heroes united to face a challenge greater than they could possibly imagine... STATLER (V.O.) Being entertaining? WALDORF (V.O.) Keeping us awake? MR. EXCELSIOR (V.O.) Look, do you guys mind? I'm foreshadowing here. Ahem. Greater than they could possibly imagine... CUT TO: 2. THE MUPPET SHOW COMIC BOOK By Roger Langridge. WALTER reads it, whistling the Marvel Studios theme to himself, until KERMIT All right, is everybody ready for the big pitch meeting? INT. MUPPET STUDIOS The shout startles Walter, who tips over backwards in his chair out of frame, revealing KERMIT THE FROG, emerging from his office into the central space of Muppet Studios. The offices are dated, a little shabby, but they've been thoroughly Muppetized into a wacky, cozy, creative space. SCOOTER appears at Kermit's side, and we follow them through the office. -

Dragon Warrior II Mini Guide This guide has some notes and tactics to make gaining levels faster and survival easier, as well as a lot of info I have yet to see anywhere else. It shows level by level the different areas I use to fight monsters and gain exp/gold so that I'm not stuck in any one particular area for long at all and get to see every enemy in the game. It doesn't talk about common knowledge things like what each chest has, equipment costs, getting 2 water flying cloths, etc. and assumes the person reading it has played the game at least a little. THIS GUIDE IS FOR THE NES VERSION OF THE GAME!!!!!! Though quite a few tricks here will work on SNES/MOBILE version a lot has been changed in them to make the game just way WAY easier compared to the original NES version. I hope that this guide is at least of some use to a few hardcore fans still having issues with this old game. A FEW GENERAL NOTES/TIPS: *I tend to play this game using FCEUX emulator; this is so that I can overclock it to 150% by hitting the + key once. This makes the game MUCH more fast paced and saves time for those of you who like me have a busy schedule. Also I don't use savestates to cheese thru the game. F that. *Decide whether your goal in the area is to get thru a stage or grind. Don't try and do both at once.
