My parents bought our first color set in the summer of 1968 so that we could watch Olympians compete, their skintones ranging from metallic green to glorious bubblegum pink. VHF "rabbit ears" were augmented by a UHF "hoop," until cable made antennas obsolete for most Americans. Now TV is truly ubiquitous in our culture. Large screen, pocket-sized, and now the promise of high-definition TV arrives just as high-speed, broad-band internet may make TV as we know it irrelevant. More simply put: my parents grew up in a world without television. I grew up with TV as a constant influence. while .44'4** my nieces and nephews may already be looking beyond television. All this in 50 years! ---4 1 . The term "television" was first used in 1907 in Scientific 15 Ame rican magazine to describe the transmission of pic- - tures. John L. Baird gave the first demonstration of a \ television system in England in 1925. In 1927. Ameri- K 1**4'91"'L.,7 can inventor Philo T. Farnsworth applied for a patent *a, and, with Vladimir Zworykin, broke television free from the limits of the mechanical scanner by creating an all electric system.     Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Transmedia Muppets: The Possibilities of Performer Narratives AARON CALBREATH-FRASIEUR, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT This article examines how the Muppets franchise engages with transmedia narratives, their stories moving fluidly between television, film, comics, the internet and more. Rather than highlight the complexity Henry Jenkins (2006), Elizabeth Evans (2011) and others associate with transmedia, an examination of the Muppets offers insight into a mechanism that allows for simpler coherent connection between texts. The Muppets’ ongoing performer narrative challenges the prevailing understanding of transmedia storytelling. As performative characters (singers, actors, performance artists), any text concerned with Muppets, even those in which they act as other characters, becomes part of an overarching Muppet narrative. A high degree of self-reflexivity further supports transmediality, as most Muppet texts contain references to that text as a performance by the Muppets. Thus the comic Muppet Robin Hood and the film Muppet Treasure Island continue the story of the Muppets as further insight is gained into the characters' personalities and ongoing performance history. Examining different iterations of the Muppets franchise illuminates the ramifications of performer narratives for transmedia storytelling. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, franchise, narrative, Muppets, multi-platform For over fifty-five years the Muppets have been appearing in media texts. They began on local television but have spread across most contemporary mediums, with many of these texts part of the over-arching, ongoing Muppet story. This article explores an alternative framework for defining one form of transmedia storytelling. This model suggests a complication in the understanding of transmedia storytelling put forward by Henry Jenkins (2006) and Elizabeth Evans (2011).

Cheryl Henson is the President of The Jim Henson Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of The Jim Henson Company. From 1992–2000, Cheryl executive produced the award winning biennial Henson International Festival of Puppet Theater. These five festivals presented 136 different productions from 31 countries in 24 theaters throughout New York City including the five theaters at The Public. The Festival won both the Drama Desk and the OBIE Award, received prestigious coverage and is widely acknowledged as having changed the perception of contemporary American puppet theater today. Cheryl has been the President of The Jim Henson Foundation since 1992. The Foundation awards grants to artists creating new works of excellence in contemporary American puppet theater. To date, The Foundation has awarded over 800 grants to more than 350 artists. “Cheryl and her family have been invaluable supporters of the Museum and its mission. They CHORTLE as the credits FADE TO BLACK A familiar voice -- one we've heard many times before, and will hear again later in the movie... MR. EXCELSIOR (V.O.)
