Cheryl Henson is the President of The Jim Henson Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of The Jim Henson Company. From 1992–2000, Cheryl executive produced the award winning biennial Henson International Festival of Puppet Theater. These five festivals presented 136 different productions from 31 countries in 24 theaters throughout New York City including the five theaters at The Public. The Festival won both the Drama Desk and the OBIE Award, received prestigious coverage and is widely acknowledged as having changed the perception of contemporary American puppet theater today. Cheryl has been the President of The Jim Henson Foundation since 1992. The Foundation awards grants to artists creating new works of excellence in contemporary American puppet theater. To date, The Foundation has awarded over 800 grants to more than 350 artists. “Cheryl and her family have been invaluable supporters of the Museum and its mission. Erfunden worden war die Sendung jedoch in den USA von dem nicht kommerziellen Unternehmen Children’s Television Workshop. Ein Team von Psychologen, Pädagogen, Werbefachleuten, Ärzten und Fernsehredakteuren hatte damals untersucht, was Kinder am Fernsehen besonders fasziniert. Das Ergebnis: Tiere, Puppen, Cartoons, Slapstick-Komik, Tempo, Witz und Prominente als Wissensvermittler. Auf der Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wurde SESAME STREET entwickelt. Zielgruppe waren vor allem Kinder aus unterprivilegierten Bevölkerungsschichten, die man bereits im Vorschulalter fördern wollte. In Deutschland wurde die Einführung der innovativen Serie kontrovers diskutiert. In den Anfangsjahren strahlten der NDR und andere dritte Programme synchronisierte Fassungen der amerikanischen Originalserie aus. Dabei wurde auf Amerikanismen verzichtet, und immer häufiger wurden deutsche Einzelbeiträge – beispielsweise zum Thema Alphabet – in die Folgen eingefügt. 1978 begann eine neue Ära der SESAMSTRASSE: Als Kulisse für die Rahmenhandlung entstand eine neue Straße mit Wohnhäusern und einem Marktstand. With the opening of Jim and Jane Henson: Creative Work, Creative Play at the Storehouse Gallery, the Historical Society sets out to explore the Hensons' Greenwich years, during which the pair's boundless creative energy set the backdrop for both work and family life as they laid the foundations for what would result in a global entertainment phenomenon. Jim (1936-1990) and Jane (1934-2013) Henson, best known as creators of The Muppets, made Greenwich, CT, their home from 1964 until 1971. The family grew to include five children, six cats, a couple of dogs, various other animals (real) and more than a few monsters (imaginary). Life at their historic home on Round Hill Road was infused with imagination and artistic expression, reflecting the Hensons' playful and inventive approach to parenting and their work as artists and performers. Believing that art should be central to education, Jim and Jane were enthusiastic local participants in the founding of The Mead School in 1969, where art became a core part of the curriculum. More broadly, their intense interest in television's educational possibilities led to their involvement in the iconic Sesame Street series, which premiered the same year.
