Survey: Both Democrats and GOP love 'This Is Us,' 'Game of Thrones' BY JUDY KURTZ - 03/03/20 © Courtesy of HBO The country may be more politically polarized than ever, but there are at least a couple things that both Democrats and Republicans agree on: They dig "This is Us" and "Game of Thrones." The NBC drama and former HBO fantasy series were some of the top picks on both sides of the aisle, according to a recent survey from E-Poll Market Research. Fifty-five percent of Democrats counted "This is Us" as their fave broadcast TV show, along with 68 percent of Republicans. Fifty-two percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Republicans surveyed also listed "Chicago Med" as one of their top TV picks. Other popular choices among Democrats included "Supernatural," Fox's "9-1-1" and "The Rookie," while Republicans said they delighted in "Grey's Anatomy," "Last Man Standing" and Chicago PD." The two parties had more than half of the top 20 TV shows in common, but there were a few notable differences among their boob tube choices. The results show that, of the Americans surveyed, Democrats prefer getting more laughs from their small screen fare, picking seven sitcoms as their favorites, compared to the GOP respondents' three comedy shows. A separate survey of top streaming and cable shows found that Democrats preferred Starz's "Power," with 63 percent of those surveyed naming it as their favored show, and "Game of Thrones," with 51 percent. Democracy Dies in Darkness 50 years later, ‘The Monster at the End of This Book’ is still selling — and inspiring authors By Danny Freedman Jan. 27, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. EST As a 4-year-old, Brad Parks was so ravenous for “The Monster at the End of This Book” that his older brother — facing endless requests to read the story — finally recorded a version on an audio cassette. For Parks, now an accomplished author, the book was a formative introduction to suspense. “The fact is,” he says, “I am 46 years old, I write thrillers for adults, and in some ways all I’ve ever tried to do is replicate ‘The Monster at the End of This Book.’ There is a monster at the end of all of my novels, and I want you to feel this unbearable compulsion to turn pages and find out what it is.” Parks is far from the only one to get hooked on the story. The book, featuring Grover from “Sesame Street,” was published by Little Golden Books in 1971, and 50 years later nearly 13 million copies of various editions have been sold. “But that Little Golden Book — that classic, the way it first came out — is the one that continues to just sell and sell and sell,” says Mallory Loehr, a senior vice president at Random House who oversees its imprints for young readers. It’s one of the top-10 selling Little Golden Books of all time. A decade-old interactive app version has been downloaded more than half a million times and is among the most popular book apps. -

Rose Princess Glynn-Helene Joseph is daughter of MTA Mechanic Emil Joseph. By GAYLE ANDERSON More than 950 young women in the Pasadena-area vied for the coveted post of princess in the Tournament of Roses Royal Court. One week later, 100 were chosen as semi-finalists and, from there, 38 finalists began yet another round of interviews and tests for presence that would unnerve all but the truly poised. When the seven princesses were announced last Monday, two of the royal court just happened to be members of the MTA family. Both are daughters of MTA employees. Glynn-Helene Joseph, daughter of Metro Red Line mechanic Emil Joseph, and Anjali Agrawal, daughter of MTA engineer Sudhir Agrawal, were both selected princesses of the Royal Court. (See metro.net Oct. 17: "Everything’s coming up roses for MTA engineer’s daughter.") MTA Mechanic Emil Joseph was at the press conference at Tournament Hall last Monday when his daughter, 17-year-old Glynn-Helene Joseph, was selected. “She was the last one called, but I wasn’t worried; I knew she would win,” he said in a telephone interview. “She was smiling the whole time. She is so outgoing; everybody loves her. I knew she would be the one.” Glynn-Helene was a little more apprehensive than her father knew, however. Wer nicht fragt, bleibt dumm.“ Mit diesem Titellied wurde die deutsche SESAMSTRASSE am 8. Januar 1973 zum ersten Mal ausgestrahlt. Erfunden worden war die Sendung jedoch in den USA von dem nicht kommerziellen Unternehmen Children’s Television Workshop. Ein Team von Psychologen, Pädagogen, Werbefachleuten, Ärzten und Fernsehredakteuren hatte damals untersucht, was Kinder am Fernsehen besonders fasziniert. Das Ergebnis: Tiere, Puppen, Cartoons, Slapstick-Komik, Tempo, Witz und Prominente als Wissensvermittler. Auf der Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wurde SESAME STREET entwickelt. Zielgruppe waren vor allem Kinder aus unterprivilegierten Bevölkerungsschichten, die man bereits im Vorschulalter fördern wollte. In Deutschland wurde die Einführung der innovativen Serie kontrovers diskutiert. In den Anfangsjahren strahlten der NDR und andere dritte Programme synchronisierte Fassungen der amerikanischen Originalserie aus. Dabei wurde auf Amerikanismen verzichtet, und immer häufiger wurden deutsche Einzelbeiträge – beispielsweise zum Thema Alphabet – in die Folgen eingefügt. 1978 begann eine neue Ära der SESAMSTRASSE: Als Kulisse für die Rahmenhandlung entstand eine neue Straße mit Wohnhäusern und einem Marktstand. Representations of Diversity in the Children’s Educational Television Show Sesame Street Veronica Hauad EDUP&L 834 – MON/WED 1:30pm The goal of this lesson is to help students assess the representation of racial and ethnic diversity (or total lack thereof) in media. This specific lesson will address the representation of diversity in the children’s educational television show Sesame Street. Overview More than ever, very young children are watching television. They are watching on the weekends, after school, and sometimes even in the classroom as a means of learning. If television is going to play such an important part in the lives of children, it is imperative that parents and educators highlight the television shows that will be the most beneficial for their children to watch. Ideally television shows geared toward young children would be as educational as possible, both in the traditional school sense as well as culturally educational. Since the show’s inception, the creators of Sesame Street have strived to provide both kinds of education. Sesame Street first aired in 1969. The creators of the show developed Sesame Street with the goal of improving school readiness in urban socioeconomically disadvantaged children. Segments highlighted the introduction of letters of the alphabet, numbers, and shapes and colors. But the show was also designed to promote positive images of diversity. The show’s creators hoped that positive media representations of racial and ethnic minorities would not only boost cultural pride and self-confidence, but they would also enhance awareness and understanding.
