A%"(9'0)%" ********************************************************************************************************************************1,G! 5 ABSTRACT Lesbian Deliberation: The Constitution of Community in Online Lesbian Forums This thesis analyses the constitution of, and interactions within, five online lesbian fan groups devoted to the United States television series The L Word over a six year period, 2004-2009. This thesis is essentially an audience studies and new media thesis. I draw upon theories of community formation and deliberative democracy, particularly those espoused by John Dryzek (2000) and Seyla Benhabib (1996). I argue that the fan groups studied engage in debates that are indicative of shifting normative discourses in lesbian communities. My argument has implications for the theorisation of lesbian community and the theorisation of online community, and I consequently engage with a wide range of scholarship on both online and offline communities, including that of Henry Jenkins (1992) Shane Phelan (1989, 1994), and Howard Rheingold (1993, 2000). In order to elaborate on my central claim about fan sites as spaces of deliberation, I focus on flame wars as well as more benign interactions around key topics. These deliberations were provoked by plot elements in The L Word such as the constitution of lesbian communities, including the presence of bisexuals, transgenders, and heterosexuals. Another plot element that provoked discussion was same-sex intimate partner violence. The potential for deliberation in the forums is often affected by the commercialisation of some of the fan forums, and I explore how the fan forums were governed in order to ascertain to what extent this is the case. The L Word fan forums also offer a manifestation of “the lesbian imaginary,” through the posting and sharing of fan fiction in which lesbian communities, identities, bodies, sexualities

The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Nohrstedt Introduction This chapter reflects on the role of mainstream journalism in the proliferation of Islamophobia in late modern society, by analysing two cases where newspapers in Denmark and Sweden published cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. Both are instances of mediated perceptions of Muslims, symbolized by the Prophet, as a threat to freedom of speech, but in rather different ways. However, together they illustrate discursive processes and opinion-building strategies used by right-wing populism in which journalism becomes both amplifier and echo-chamber due to media logic. The first case, where the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten printed a series of Muhammad cartoons in 2005, has been intensively discussed both by journalists and media researchers (e.g. Eide et al. 2008, Sundström 2009). The second case, in 2007 where the Swedish newspaper Nerikes-Allehanda published a cartoon portraying Muhammad as a toy dog, has also been studied by media researchers (Camauër 2011, Camauër (ed.) forthcoming).

    Cold Open: On the afternoon of December 21st, 1978, a half-dozen Chicago investigators, armed with a fresh search warrant, made their way down into the crawlspace beneath the home of John Wayne Gacy, at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago. Officer Daniel Genty made his way, crawling along his stomach, to a spot underneath Gacy’s kitchen where he saw what looked like human hair sticking out of the ground. Shining a floodlight on the area, he saw a long depression that looked like a dry lake bed with cracks in the yellow gray covering of a layer of lime that Gacy had put over the entire surface of the dirt beneath the home. Genty popped an entrenching tool into the ground and after two shovelfuls of dirt, he hit some whitish bits of soap-like material. It was adipocere (“Add-i-pah-sear”) flesh - body tissue that has chemically changed to a lard like substance due to rot and moisture. The crawlspace smelled like a sewer. Genty dug further and hit bone. An arm bone. Definitely human. There were more hair strands on his little shovel. Genty turned towards some other officers poking their heads through the crawlspace access door. “Charge him,” he said. “I’ve found one.” Within minutes, Gacy was in police custody, charged on suspicion of murder. The body Genty had began to uncover was the first of what would be 28 corpses that would be removed from underneath his home. We tend to like it dark here in the Suck, and it’s hard to get darker than this week’s Gacy.

    European Scientific Journal May 2014 edition vol.10, No.14 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 CONFLICT IN THE GLOBAL AGE: THE CASE OF DANISH CARTOON CRISIS Ayhan Akbulut, PhD Turkish National Police, Turkey Abstract This paper attempts to understand the new forms of international conflicts and the global forces having an impact on that in the last decade. For this sake it examines the global crisis known as Danish Cartoon Crisis, its background features, actors, the impacts of these actors and the effects of globalization trends on the process. Findings show that the background of the cartoon case is composed by the civilization identity. Whereas people from different cultures have become closer to each other with the accelerating pace of globalization, the differences come to the fore and put them further in mind in the new small world. Increasing communication availability also increased the tension between people from different civilizational identities and the result has been more systemic hatred among them as a negative side of globalization. Keywords: International conflict, globalization, cartoon crisis Introduction This paper tries to understand the changing nature of international conflicts in the last decade. For this purpose it examines the international crisis, known as Danish Cartoon Crisis, and lived between Islamic countries and Western Europe in late 2005 and 2006. The main global background features and the actors of the crisis, the influences of the actors and the global sources of those influences form the subject of the paper. Firstly, a brief overview is made about international conflicts and its changing patterns in the history.
