The collection was captured by the English in 1795 and Labillardiere appealed to Sir Joseph Banks for its return. The collection was eventually returned to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. No official seems ever to be willing to accept responsibility for such stuff-ups and measures are taken to shut down any real enquiry by silencing those who March 2018 know the facts. Interested parties may contact the editors. Harry Margalit and Paola Favaro, UNSW Australia From Social Role to Urban Significance: The Changing Presence of the MLC Company in Martin Place The intersection of Martin Place and Castlereagh Street in Sydney is dominated by a single institution – the MLC (Mutual Life and Citizens’ Assurance Company). To the south is the MLC Centre (1971-77), and on the northern corner stands the interwar MLC building of 1938. The company has a long association with the area, with the Citizens’ Life Assurance Company established in 1886 and headquartered at 21-25 Castlereagh Street. The MLC Company came into being in 1908 with the amalgamation of the Citizens’ Life Assurance Co. Limited and the Mutual Life Assurance Association of Australia. This paper examines the history of the 1938 and 1977 buildings as a means to understanding and elucidating not only the development of the company, but also changing attitudes to how it represented itself through specific buildings, and how the function and public presence of each building chart a shift in urban design attitudes and the use of public space.

  • Grace in Auschwitz: a Glimpse of Light in Utter Darkness
Grace in Auschwitz: A Glimpse of Light in Utter Darkness By Jean-Pierre Fortin A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Theology of the University of St. Michael‟s College and the Department of Theology of the Toronto School of Theology in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology Awarded by the University of St. Michael‟s College © Copyright by Jean-Pierre Fortin 2014 Grace in Auschwitz: A Glimpse of Light in Utter Darkness Jean-Pierre Fortin Doctor of Philosophy in Theology University of St. Michael‟s College 2014 Abstract Since the postmodern human condition and relationship to God were forged directly in the crucible of or in response to Auschwitz (the Shoah), the Christian theology of grace cannot elude the challenge of radical evil it paradigmatically embodies and symbolizes. The present dissertation attempts to provide a theology of grace that would enable twenty-first century postmoderns to meaningfully relate to the Christian tradition. A theological interface accomplishing the transposition of the theology and categories of the traditional account of grace into ones accessible to twenty-first century westerners is therefore constructed. By means of the study of landmark literary, philosophical and theological works on Auschwitz produced by individuals who directly suffered it, an attempt at monitoring the human (and ultimately postmodern) condition, experience and evolution (in themselves and in relation to the transcendent) through time from before, through the event and up to the experience of renewed freedom is made. This is followed by the consideration of the reality of grace as it has been experienced, reflected upon and understood by western Christianity.

An intensely personal yet epic spiritual journey, The Horse Boy follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through Outer Mongolia in an attempt to find healing for their son. When two-year-old Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson, a writer and former horse trainer, and his wife Kristin Neff, a psychology professor, sought the best possible medical care for their son—but traditional therapies had little effect. Then they discovered that Rowan has a profound affinity for animals— particularly horses—and the family set off on a quest that would change their lives forever. Directed by Michel Orion Scott, The Horse Boy is part travel adventure, part insight into shamanic healing and part intimate look at the autistic mind. In telling one family’s extraordinary story, the film gives voice to the thousands who display amazing courage and creativity everyday in the battle against this mysterious and heartbreaking epidemic. The filmic companion to Isaacson’s best-selling book of the same name, and a festival favorite, this ravishing documentary odyssey gives insight into how, in life’s darkest moments, one can find the gateway to joy and wonder.

This work shows Penleigh Boyd’s accomplished handling of the effects of light and his talent as a colourist, with the shift of delicate blues and purples giving the work a still, calm and contemplative feel. The viewer is anchored by the shoreline in the foreground and the eye floats out over the vista of the Bay, following the jetty on Point King beach, to the subtle horizon line and the glowing clouds. Boyd’s skill with watercolour is clear in this large-scale work, especially the technique of scoring the paper to create the white wave crests breaking along the shore. 5 Malakoff Street, North Caulfield, Vic, 3161 Telephone: (61 3) 9509 9855 Facsimile: (61 3) 9509 4549 Email: [email protected] Website: www.diggins.com.au ABN.19006 457 101 L A U R A I N E · D I G G I N S · F I N E · A R T Theodore Penleigh Boyd was the son of Arthur Merric Boyd (1862 – 1940, artist) and Emma Minnie Boyd (1858 – 1936, artist); brother to William Merric Boyd (1888 – 1959, potter); father to Robin Boyd (1919 – 1971, architect) and uncle to Arthur Merric Bloomfield Boyd (1920 – 1998, artist).
