At the time in which the film is set, television is thriving and the number of films has diminished; movie theaters are closing and cinema is experiencing an existential crisis. For Jean- Luc Godard, it was the end of a cinema that he loved passionately. 20 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | APRIL 2016 | A Film and Its Era Vincent, François, Paul and the Others by Claude Sautet director Antoine de Gaudemar cast Claude Sautet, Romy Schneider, Michel Piccoli Il était une fois… Vincent, François, Paul et les autres, 2010

Claude Sautet shot Vincent, François, Paul and the Others in 1974. Three inseparable men with problems face life in their 50s. A small world of women, children and friends of different ages and social backgrounds gravitates around them. Showing the men’s turmoil and the women’s emancipation, this film became the biggest success of Claude Sautet’s career. Sautet was renowned as a famous script expert of the profession before starting to dabble infilm noir. In his films, he depicted an intimate and unapologetic take on small businesses, suburbia, Premiere: cafés, and weekends away in the countryside. April 16th • 08:00 PM

A Film and Its Era Tess, by Jean-Luc Godard director Serge July, Daniel Ablinn cast Roman Polanski, Nastassia Kinski, Claude Berri, Philippe Sarde Il était une fois… Tess, 2006

Roman Polanski would wait to meet Nastassia Kinski and, most importantly, his exile in France after a rapid exit from the United States, to begin work on Tess in 1978. Claude Berri orchestrates the production, at the time the most costly film made in the history of French cinema, at the service of a star: Roman Polanski. The portrait of this film, one of Polanski’s rare love stories, and one of his most highly-acclaimed works, is a group portrait as well: cathartic for Roman Polanski and Nastassia Kinski, and a double-or-nothing gamble for Claude Berri. It is also the portrait of an era, following the rape of a young country girl through the hollow pathways of a landscape and a society heading for extinction at the end of nineteenth-century Premiere: England: agrarian civilization. EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | APRIL 2015 | 21 A Film and Its Era Premiere: April 23rd • 08:00 PM To Our Loves, by Maurice Pialat

director David Thompson cast Maurice Pialat, Sandrine Bonnaire, Sylvie Pialat, Florence Quentin Il était une fois… A nos amours, 2012

Pialat directed To Our Loves in 1983. In the movie, Suzanne is 15. On holiday on the Cote d’Azur, she rejects the boy she loves and gives herself to a stranger on the beach. Back in Paris she revels in sexual encounters. Her father, a man she admires, has left the family. Torn between a half-mad mother and a tyrannical and egocentric brother who beats her, she takes refuge in a marriage without a future. After the return of the father during a family dinner, she decides to leave the family for the United States. The film tells the story of the birth of a modern woman in the early 80s, that of a young girl who belongs to a generation influenced by contraception, who makes love seeking immediate gratification but ultimately knows not what she wants from life.

A Film and Its Era Premiere: Queen Margot, Patrice Chéreau April 24th • 08:00 PM

director Guillaume Moscovitz cast Patrice Chéreau, Danièle Thompson, Antoine de Baecque Il était une fois… La reine Margot, 2012

Queen Margot echoes contemporary history. Director Patrice Chéreau and writer Danièle Thompson recognized their inspiration came from events related to Ayatollah Khomeini’s death in Iran, the fake Timisoara massacre in Romania and the civil war between Catholics, Orthodox Catholics and Muslims in ex-Yugoslavia. The movie was also released the same year of the Rwanda genocide. According to Chéreau, savagery was indeed a “very close” and very actual reality.

Premiere: A Film and Its Era April 29th • 08:00 PM La Haine, by Mattieu Kassovitz director Guillaume Moskovitz cast Mathieu Kassovitz, Roland Castro, Thomas Sauvadet, Cut Killer Il était une fois… La Haine, 2011

Mathieu Kassovitz directed La Haine in 1995. La Haine is the story of three young friends from a low-rent housing zone in the Parisian outskirts, set after a night of rioting. It is a portrait of unemployed youth, facing police violence and boredom. After wandering and dealing with daily trials, the journey of the three friends ends with the accidental death of one of them. Upon its release, the film inflames the press and provokes violent outbreaks; all while drawing over 2 million spectators to movie theatres. This was the second feature film of Mathieu Kassovitz, following his award-winning acting role in See How They Fall. A gifted actor, a virtuoso director, a filmmaker connected to his era: Mathieu Kassovitz
