From Short Story to Film: Wayne Wang’s Film Adaptation of “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers” Wei Miao* ABSTRACT This article focuses on Wayne Wang’s film adaptation of contemporary US-based migrant writer Yiyun Li’s short story “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.” I will first briefly recount Yiyun Li’s life story as it emerges through her published articles and interviews, although I am primarily concerned with how these autobiographical fragments provide a way to unlock Wayne Wang’s film A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, for which Li developed the screenplay. The expansion of the original short story into a feature-length film allows for a more vivid representation of the long-term emotional consequences of the political and social violence of the Chinese totalitarian regime. At a glance, the alternatives the film seems to present are, on the one hand, a life of silence under political totalitarianism, or on the other, migration to a developed western country that boasts democracy and freedom of speech. On closer inspection, however, it is revealed that the decision to be made between silence and speech is not an easy one, particularly in terms of familial intimacy. Graced by local Peranakan personalities and celebrities who have grown up around Katong, the Opening Gala marked a new milestone in the history of Katong – an area of Singapore associated with Peranakan culture and gastronomical delights. Amongst the Peranakan personalities who were in attendance were the likes of iconic Peranakan stage performer, Mr GT Lye; Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage, Mr Alvin Tan; and popular actress and thespian, Ms Tan Kheng Hua, who was accompanied by her daughter. Marta Forns Escudé Abstract: This dissertation argues that the Government of the People’s Republic of China, when it made the decision to import a quota of Hollywood films in 1994 to revive the failing domestic film industry, had different possible criteria in mind. This project has studied four of them: first, importing films that gave a negative image of the United States; second, impor- ting films that featured Chinese talent or themes; third, importing films that were box office hits in the United States; and fourth, importing films with a strong technological innovation ingredient. In order to find out the most important criteria for the Chinese Government, this dissertation offers a dataset that analyzes a population of 262 Hollywood films released in the PRC between 1994 and 2010. -

Press Release Golden Village & KRU Studios Team Up for Distribution of Malay-Language Films The new partnership will see the release of 1st 3D Malay film in Singapore Singapore, 4th September 2012 – Golden Village (GV), Singapore’s leading cinema exhibitor and independent distributor, has successfully inked an agreement with KRU Studios (KRU) ─ one of the largest media conglomerates in Malaysia ─ to distribute Malay-language films in Singapore. The new partnership will see at least 10 Malay-language films screened annually in Singapore, starting this month. This announcement bodes well for local movie-goers, especially those who are passionate about Asian-produced feature films. Golden Village proudly celebrates this collaboration by screening the first 3D Malay film in Singapore, 29 FEBRUARI. Opening this Thursday, 6 September, the film tells the story of a man born on the leap day of 29 February and only ages once every four years. His unique aging process saw him living through the many historical periods of Malaysia, witnessing its changing landscape from its early days to 2012. Available in both 2D and 3D format, movie-goers will be able to enjoy this title at three GV cinemas; GV VivoCity, GV Tampines and GV Yishun. KRU, which was founded in 1992, has swiftly established itself to become one of the leading players in Malaysia’s media and entertainment industry. Paul Auster, Hector Mann and The Book of Illusions Anna Scannavini Introduction I shall address the creation of a feature film and a set of silent shorts in Paul Auster’s novel The Book of Illusions.1 I shall place Auster’s story against the background of American topography and look closely at the narration of the making of the film and the connections the book establishes between films as a form of art and their making. Topography deserves attention in The Book of Illusions because Auster moves the story away from his favorite settings in New York City, marking a break with his previous literary and filmic work. Brooklyn and Manhattan are the quintessential milieus not only of the New York Trilogy, perhaps his best fictional work, but also of Smoke and Blue in the Face, the film scripts that mark Auster as a filmmaker. Smoke and Blue in the Face were released in 1995, about ten years after the publication of the Trilogy, with Smoke directed by Wayne Wang and Blue in the Face directed jointly by Wang and Auster. Both films feature Harvey Keitel as “Auggie” Wren, the owner of a cigar store in Prospect Park that attracts local characters and their stories. The cigar store and Auggie supply a frame and fixed point of view on the sur- rounding neighborhood life. Although in different ways, both movies are held together by framing and montage.2 In Smoke, framing is provided by photography. Auggie documents his surrounding life by taking snapshots from the fixed vantage point of his store at various times of the day. -

Le même et le différent À partir de Smoke (Wayne Wang, Paul Auster, 1995) Par Nicolas Tixier Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) tient un débit de tabac à Brooklyn au coin de la 16ème rue et de Prospect Park West. Chaque matin il traverse le carrefour face à sa boutique et dispose avec attention, toujours au même endroit, son appareil photo sur un trépied. Il regarde sa montre, attend la bonne heure et appuie sur le déclencheur. Ce n’est qu’ensuite qu’il regarde dans le viseur, puis note une courte remarque sur un calepin qu’il range ensuite dans la poche avant de sa chemise. Chaque photo rejoindra un album où jour après jour, page après page, depuis de nombreuses années et sans jamais prendre de vacances, se sédimente l’histoire d’un angle de rue, son angle de rue. Cette histoire, Le conte de Noël d’Auggie Wren, est parue dans New York Times du 25 décembre 1990, suite à la demande du quotidien d’une courte nouvelle originale à Paul Auster1. Le lendemain de Noël, le réalisateur Wayne Wang tombe par hasard sur cette pleine page. Il rencontre en mai 1991 l’écrivain. Ensemble ils réaliseront Smoke (1995), adaptation de la nouvelle. Paul Auster enchaînera avec la réalisation de Brooklyn Boogie(1995), joyeux portrait des personnages du quartier que l’on croise autour de la boutique à cigares et à négoce en tous genres du même Auggie Wren, la Brooklyn Cigar Company. Paul Benjamin (William Hurt), un écrivain habitué du lieu, rentre dans la boutique juste au moment de la fermeture. -

An Analysis of Chinese Box MLC1002 Cosmopolitan Culture and Hong Kong Urbanscape Dr. Thomas Luk Yun-tong (2001) Introduction This short essay will illustrate how Wayne Wang’s Chinese Box represent (in the sense of representation after Stuart Hall) Hong Kong during the handover in 1997. Wayne Wang is the Hong Kong-born director. Since the influence of American film, he called himself Wayne after the legendary Wild West film actor John Wayne. Wang studied film directing in California's College of Arts and Sciences, then return to Hong Kong as a television drama producer. In the 1980’s, Wang established his career as director in America. After the success of The Joy Luck Club (1993), Smoke (1995), Blue in the Face (1995), Wang became one of the influential Asian director in Hollywood. In 1997, Wang back to his motherland, Hong Kong, to shoot the film Chinese Box as his private diary for the handover of Hong Kong. From Chinese Box, the “love-hate letter” Wang called, we can find out how the Wang’s impression of Hong Kong is represented. The Story Superficially the story of Chinese Box is a love story. John (Jeremy Irons) is a journalist who lived in Hong Kong for 15 years. He loves Vivian (Gong Li), the owner of a karaoke bar, secretly. But Vivian only wants to marry with Chang (Michael Hui). In the middle of 1997, he found that he got cancer and will die very soon. Then he start to take camcorder to shoot the image of Hong Kong, a place that he lived for 15 years but still not yet understand.
