Hershey. ______________________________________________________________________________ Legacy of Milton S. Hershey Introduction I. Attention Getter Have any of you wondered if Willy Wonka was a real person? Well he was, but his name was Milton S. Hershey. He lived from 1857 to 1945. Mr. Hershey had extraordinary wealth, a chocolate empire, and utopian dreams. It all started with Milton S. Hershey’s failures. Long before going into chocolate, Mr. Hershey went bankrupt 3 times attempting to create a successful caramel business. Finally, he succeeded with his 4th attempt, the Lancaster Caramel Co. in 1893. It was his success in caramel that allowed him to transition to chocolate by selling his Lancaster Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1900. He used the profit from the sale to produce his milk chocolate recipe and became the first American to manufacture milk chocolate. Using this formula, he created the largest chocolate factory in the world and the utopian company town to support it. II. Audience Relevancy Statement Today, over a hundred years later, millions of people eat Hershey’s products around the world and I’m sure you or someone you know are one of them. III. Thesis Statement/Central Idea Milton S Hershey left an extraordinary legacy that still lives on today. Peter Glenville: An Inventory of His Papers at the Harry Ransom Center Descriptive Summary Creator: Glenville, Peter, 1913-1996 Title: Peter Glenville Papers Dates: 1914-2001 Extent: 37 document boxes, 5 oversize boxes, 4 oversize flat files (osf) (17.64 linear feet) Abstract: The Peter Glenville Papers embrace correspondence, business records, address books, appointment books, photographs, clippings, and personal documents. Spanning the years 1914 to 2001, the collection is largely in its original order, with the material in each series arranged alphabetically by original file title. Language: English Access: Open for research. Some materials have mold damage; see the Condition Note concerning access to these materials. Condition Note: Portions of the Peter Glenville Papers were damaged by mold during storage in the years after Glenville’s death. Most of the damaged materials were in sufficiently sound condition to permit the Ransom Center’s Conservation Department to clean them so that they could be safely handled and viewed with proper precautions. During cataloging, preservation photocopies were made of all personal correspondence located within the moderately mold-damaged materials (boxes 30-37) and these surrogates are now interfiled in the undamaged papers (boxes 1-29) to facilitate use of the collection. All photocopies are marked "Preservation photocopy of mold-damaged original in the Peter Glenville Papers." Researchers wishing to access the moderately mold-damaged originals located in boxes 30-37 are cautioned that while the Conservation Department has treated these manuscripts for mold infestation by aspiration and/or dry cleaning, mold may still be present. Users sensitive to mold should wear gloves and a dust/mist respirator while handling this material. -

Cherry Chandler Graduate Faculty Representative Cynthia Baron Don McQuarie © 2010 Lloyd Isaac Vayo All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor “Silencio: The Spectral Voice and 9/11” intervenes in predominantly visual discourses of 9/11 to assert the essential nature of sound, particularly the recorded voices of the hijackers, to narratives of the event. The dissertation traces a personal journey through a selection of objects in an effort to seek a truth of the event. This truth challenges accepted narrativity, in which the U.S. is an innocent victim and the hijackers are pure evil, with extra-accepted narrativity, where the additional import of the hijacker’s voices expand and complicate existing accounts. In the first section, a trajectory is drawn from the visual to the aural, from the whole to the fragmentary, and from the professional to the amateur. The section starts with films focused on United Airlines Flight 93, The Flight That Fought Back, Flight 93, and United 93, continuing to a broader documentary about 9/11 and its context, National Geographic: Inside 9/11, and concluding with a look at two YouTube shorts portraying carjackings, “The Long Afternoon” and “Demon Ride.” Though the films and the documentary attempt to reattach the acousmatic hijacker voice to a visual referent as a means of stabilizing its meaning, that voice is not so easily fixed, and instead gains force with each iteration, exceeding the event and coming from the past to inhabit everyday scenarios like the carjackings. -
