Placing the short film in the context of the African cinematographic traditions of earlier, more conventional, migrant narratives, the essay shows that the associative structure and the postmodern use of irony and magical realism in this short film question both our sense of familiarity and the promise of effortless transcultural communication. 1 OST FILMS (cinema and television productions) dealing with African migration, especially migration to Europe, are produced M and realized by European film and broadcasting companies. They reflect a specific attitude towards individuals and their situation and towards the issue of foreign presence on European soil. The portrayal and production of the African migrant in European media represents a complex field of poli- tically, socially, racially, and aesthetically relevant influences that would need to be analysed specifically. Awareness of these issues has spread beyond the academic field: everybody is more or less familiar with the images of African migrants, with the unease, the exaggerations, humiliations, and transformations taking place in the production of these images, and has learned to view against the grain and sometimes see behind the obvious.     JANUARY 31, 2014 A RE-SET FOR GERMAN FOREIGN AND SECURITY POLICY by Annette Heuser German President Joachim Gauck may lack the executive powers of his US counterpart, but his call today at the Munich Security Conference for a more active German role in global affairs is significant for the trans-Atlantic relationship. Berlin could now be at the threshold of a new era of global outreach, including military involvement. Gauck defined nothing less than a new narrative for his country’s position in the world. He argued that Germany reaps more economic benefits from globalization than most other nations and, consequently, must assume its foreign and security responsibilities. He urged Germany, which has been instrumental for more than 60 years in the formation and growth of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Europe, to use its recent history as the bedrock for a newfound self-assuredness: “...we are now permitted to have confidence in our abilities and should trust in ourselves. For we know that people who trust in themselves gain the strength to reach out to the world. People who trust in themselves can be relied on by their partners.” Gauck included in this outreach a military component firmly embedded in Berlin’s western alliances. An average of 9.5 degrees was 1.3 degrees Celsius above the long-term average of 8.2 degrees. International climate experts are agreed that the global rise in temperature must stay below two degrees Celsius if the effects of climate change are to remain controllable. But the time corridor for the effective reduction of greenhouse gases damaging to the climate is getting narrower and narrower. In the last century already the Earth’s average temperature rose by 0.8 degrees. The experts in the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change anticipate a further rise of up to 6.4 degrees by 2100.

Volume 8, Issue 2 November 2011 Reviewing Romcom: (100) IMDb Users and (500) Days of Summer Inger-Lise Kalviknes Bore Birmingham City University, UK Abstract This article contributes to academic debates around the romantic comedy genre and comedy audiences by examining IMDb user reviews of (500) Days of Summer (2009). Directed by Marc Webb for Fox Searchlight Pictures, (500) Days of Summer was promoted with the tagline ‘Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t’. This presents the film as an unconventional romantic comedy in at least three ways: Firstly, it suggests that these two characters will not actually end up together, which challenges the idea of the romcom couple as ‘meant to be’. Secondly, it presents the possibility that audiences might not get the happy ending we usually expect from comedy. And finally, the tagline casts the boy, rather than the girl, in the role as yearning romantic, thereby challenging the traditional gender roles of heterosexual relationships. So how did audiences respond to this film? At the time of writing, it has been rated by 75,716 IMDb users, and has an average score of 8.0 out of 10. This clearly suggests a favourable reception, but the IMDb reviews also offer qualitative data that can shed further light on how the film has been evaluated. What kinds of criteria are in operation? What elements do reviewers highlight as important for their experiences of the film? How is the film seen to fail for some viewers? Drawing on previous studies of romantic comedy, the analysis will consider how these particular audience members articulated their responses to (500) Days of Summer, as well as their positions as reviewers.
