11. Vegetation T. Heartsill Scalley he first forest supervisor and chief forester of the Tthen Luquillo National Forest and eventual Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) recognized four forest types in the national forest. These forest types were based on the “nature, circumstance, and elevation of the vegetation” for “convenience in description and to aid in preparation of management plans” (Bruner 1919). The four forest types are riparian, slope, sierra palm, and elfin forests. Bruner’s classification formed the basis for the forest “sites” or “areas of distinct productivity,” as later renamed by Wadsworth (1951), and this nomenclature is presently in common usage: tabonuco, palo colorado, palm, and elfin (also termed dwarf, cloud, or mossy forest) forest types. We don’t recommend the use of dwarf or cloud forest to identify elfin forests because these elfin or mossy forestssensu ( Howard 1968) are not dwarfed sensu stricto nor are they uniquely cloud Figure 62.—Landscape view from the west of the Luquillo Experimental forests. Aceito em 24/06/2008 RESUMO – (Flora da Paraíba, Brasil: Combretaceae). Apresenta-se o tratamento taxonômico da família Combretaceae como parte do projeto “Flora da Paraíba”, que vem sendo realizado com o objetivo de identificar e catalogar as espécies da flora local. As identificações, descrições e ilustrações botânicas foram efetuadas pela análise morfológica de amostras frescas e espécimes herborizados, com o auxílio da bibliografia e análise de tipos, complementadas pelas observações de campo. Foram registradas 11 espécies subordinadas a cinco gêneros: Buchenavia (1), Combretum (8), Conocarpus (1) e Laguncularia (1). Algumas espécies possuem distribuição restrita aos manguezais, como Conocarpus erectus L. e Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C.F. Gaertn., à Caatinga, como Combretum glaucocarpum Mart., C. leprosum Mart. e C. hilarianum D. Dietr., e a Floresta Atlântica, como Buchenavia tetraphylla (Aubl.) R.A. Howard, Combretum fruticosum (Loefl.) Stuntz e C. laxum Jacq. This taxonomic treatment of the genus Solanum is part of the “Flora da Paraíba” project which aims to identify and catalogue the species of the local flora. Lugo Received: 9 January 2009 / Accepted: 9 May 2009 / Published online: 27 May 2009 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009 Abstract The African tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata Beauv., is an introduced spe- cies forming novel forest types in Puerto Rico. These forests develop naturally after deforestation, agricultural use and land abandonment, and there are many questions as to their ecological characteristics. We sampled structure and species composition of large, small, and juvenile trees (C10, C2.5 to \10, and \2.5 cm diameter at breast height, respectively) in nine secondary forests dominated by S. campanulata on alluvial, karst, and volcanic substrates in northcentral Puerto Rico. No differences were found in S. cam- panulata forest structure between substrates. Of a total of 79 species found, 17 were introduced. Forests on karst and alluvium had the highest and lowest global species richness, respectively. Species richness increased from large to small to juvenile trees in most sites, but more so on karst. The percentage of introduced species was inversely related to species richness of tree size classes on all substrate types. The dominance of S. campanulata in the large tree size class was highest and lowest in alluvial and volcanic sites, respectively, and decreased from large to small to juvenile trees on all substrate types. -

Howard, conocido Clima comúnmente como granadillo, es un árbol de gran tamaño En Puerto Rico, el granadillo crece en las zonas de vida con un tronco recto que presenta unas pocas ramas subtropical húmeda, subtropical muy húmeda y subtropical ampliamente esparcidas y casi totalmente horizontales con pluvial (16), en donde es un árbol relativamente poco común. un follaje poco denso. Las hojas pequeñas, espatuladas y de La precipitación anual promedio en estas áreas varía entre color verde amarillo aparecen en grupos dirigidos hacia 1500 y casi 4000 mm. IAWA Bulletin n.s. 10 (3): 219–332 [4th printing 2007] Published for the International Association of Wood Anatomists at the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, Leiden 221 PREFACE This list of microscopic features for hardwood identification is the successor to the ʻStandard List of Characters Suitable For Computerized Hardwood Identificationʼ published in 1981 (IAWA Bulletin n.s. 2: 99–145) with an explanation of the coding procedure by R.B. Miller. The 1981 publication greatly stimulated international exchange of information and experience on characters suitable for hardwood identification, and inspired considerable debate on the most desirable coding procedures and identification programs. Therefore, at the IAWA meeting during the XIV International Botanical Congress in Berlin, July 1987, it was decided to revise the 1981 standard list. Because of the continuing developments in computer technology and programming, it was agreed to limit the scope of the new list to definitions, explanatory com- mentary, and illustrations of wood anatomical descriptors, rather than concentrate on coding procedures.
