It was built on the site of The Lower House, Sir Matthew Hale's original 17th century manor house, and is situated immediately to the south west of St Kenelm's Church. During the build, many original materials were retained, including the 17th century Jacobean cellars and the beautiful sweeping staircase. The gate lodge bears the date the estate was completed in 1863. Lewis Vulliamy was the architect who also built Westonbirt House for the Holford family who were related, by marriage, to the Hale family. The adjacent church of St. Kenelm’s pays homage to the family history, adorned with gracious monuments of many of the Hale family members. At the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Rose Hill School was evacuated to the house from Banstead in Surrey until 2009, when the property was reverted back to a private residence.
