“I finally had time to really go through this guide. It is just full of amazing resources. I enjoyed checking out everyone's websites as well as taking a look at all of the opportunities available to schools and the community.” Jennifer Harris, Executive Director, Rainey Institute

The corona virus pandemic has impacted us all in unthinkable ways. Most schools are still presenting classes remotely, or in some type of limited hybrid format. Area businesses and arts organizations are still mostly closed, profoundly impacting leaders and staffs, audiences, teachers and learners. It continuous to be a complex and precarious time.

Our arts education colleagues continue to creatively pivot to online to present and offer arts experiences of every dimension imaginable to young and old — so we can keep learning, growing and staying connected. It is amazing to see the resiliency.

In this special book, we offer a huge range of exciting online and virtual programs. Browse through the activities available from Cleveland Arts Education Consortium members and other sources. We know you’ll find intriguing programs along with innovative sites to explore for students of all ages, PreK-Grade 12 youth to senior adult.

As was said recently with knowledge and verve, “Cleveland IS the arts.” We believe that.

• BW – Community Arts School (CAS)

A DIVISIONAL SCHOOL OF BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY

The BW Community Arts School (CAS) offers classes in Dance, Music, and Visual Arts for children and adults.

For the upcoming Spring 2021 semester, CAS faculty and staff have carefully considered the best course of action for each program area, keeping in mind that there are unique safety considerations each type of arts activity presents. Many programs remain completely virtual while others incorporate in-person instruction. In each decision, the health and safety of our students and faculty has remained the most important factor.

Additionally, CAS offers virtual private lessons in applied instrumental music, voice, dance, and theatre. Students may enroll in private lessons to receive one-on-one instruction and coaching from a Community Arts School faculty member. Students typically enroll in lessons that meet once a week for a half-hour for the full semester. The Community Arts School offers a rolling admission where students may enroll at any time during the semester.

• Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is a museum of action, where people of all ages and backgrounds come to learn about history of bias and discrimination in order to recognize and prevent hate in all its forms in the present and future. Each year we open our doors to as many as 10,000 students who participate in student tours. 3,000 sixth through twelfth graders participate in our Stop the Hate program annually. This year, we created new resources so students can take tours online from anywhere.

Now in its 13th year, the Stop the Hate® contest is comprised of two components: Youth Speak Out Essay Writing Contest and Youth Sing Out Songwriting Contest. Both celebrate students in sixth to twelfth grade who are committed to creating a more accepting, inclusive society by standing up and speaking out against bias and bigotry as they compete for the chance to win prestigious awards.

Online Workshops: New this year, we’re launching two FREE online workshops as part of our Stop the Hate program. This anti-bias learning tool teaches history, literacy, and the arts. Teachers can choose to offer their classrooms either a songwriting or essay writing workshop at zero cost for middle and high schools, or home school groups of ten or more, within Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, and Wayne counties.

13

These totally free workshops provide: Teachers with ready-made online lessons plans taught by qualified instructors Students with access to important history about Holocaust and Civil Rights Schools with money for future anti-bias education plans

Digital Tours: Middle and high school educators can utilize our two most popular museum tours without stepping foot in the museum: Stop the Hate & Lessons of the Holocaust are now online. We’ve created them to fit within the context of an uncertain environment, giving educators total flexibility for how and when you use the material. What do these tours explore? How are power and influence used to spread hate? What is legalized hate vs individualized hate? Who are upstanders, bystanders, or perpetrators in any situation?

How do digital tours work? Object-based learning uses artifacts to discuss a moment in history. A photograph, a letter, a piece of clothing – these everyday items tell us about what life was like in the past. Using the structure “what we see, what we know, and what we wonder” students are invited to look at an object, learn how it was used during the time when it was created, and consider what that means to us today. We’re studying history while also learning about social responsibility, building empathy for others, and encouraging self-reflection. Students can access tours individually at home or as a group in the classroom. Supporting activities are designed to be self- directed, but can easily shift into small group work or become larger classroom discussions. Use the materials how you want, when you want, with complete flexibility!

Performing Artists in Residence Beginning in April 2019, Oberlin Center for the Arts launched the Performing Artists in Residence, or “PAIR” Program, partnering with students from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Mercy Allen Hospital and Welcome Nursing Home. Learn more about our work connecting arts and health

Concert Series In October 2019, Oberlin Center for the Arts initiated a Concert Series to help connect select audiences, especially those that traditionally do not have access to these experiences due to economic, educational, physical or societal barriers with socially-conscious artists. Working in partnership with the Lorain County Metro Parks and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, institutions that share this vision, it is our hope that this project facilitates interaction and inspiration amongst audiences of all ages, ultimately proving the power of artist experiences throughout our region.

Arts Education Often times, those students who stand to benefit the most from the arts, receive the least. Whatsmore, schools with a higher concentration of students in poverty are less likely to offer arts education, provide limited programming, and oftentimes lack a unified arts curriculum. Oberlin Center for the Arts is dedicated to increasing access to arts education through in-school and out of school time programming throughout the region. Students who participate in these programs build on multiple intelligences by exploring active listening, group collaboration and personal expression while developing their fine motor and analytical skills. They also grow to become better human beings, better neighbors, and better builders of community.

• The Musical Theater Project – MUSIC AND THEATER

Americans have an enduring love affair with Broadway and Hollywood musicals. It’s our very own art form, combining song and dance to express what we can be at our best. More than 100 years of America’s cultural history is tied to our musicals, and The Musical Theater Project documents and celebrates that history in a seamless blend of entertainment and education. Founded in 2000, TMTP produces concerts, in-school residency programs, radio broadcasts and recordings that:

• Create personal connections with the songs, characters and themes of the American musical. • Document the lives of important American musical theater artists. • Explore the connections between the musical and the rich diversity of the American experience. • Examine the relevance of musical theater in contemporary society.

During this uncertain time, The Musical Theater Project's Kids Love Musicals! program is spreading some virtual joy! They are here to support teachers, parents, caregivers, and kids (of all ages, stages, and abilities) as we all navigate this new world together. Their online resources will engage the body, heart, and soul. Through musicals, they will talk about feelings and provide entry points for sharing fears and concerns, as well as hopes and wishes. Long Time Coming: A 1955 Baseball Story 2018/USA/88 minutes, Directed by Jon Strong

The program will offer: · Two study guides for educators to use as part of their classroom curriculum · Q&As featuring the extraordinary baseball players from the teams featured in the film

CURRICULUM LINKS American History, Social Justice, Social Studies, African American Studies, English Language Arts, Media Studies In preparation for the screening of LONG TIME COMING, review the history of the civil rights movement and race relations in America at the time when the Pensacola Jaycees and the Orlando Kiwanis faced each other on the baseball field in the summer of 1955. Also consider how the city of Cleveland factors into this history by reviewing the entries “African Americans” and “Ethnic and Race Relations” included in Case Western Reserve University’s Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, among other resources.

Synopsis: In 1955 the southern United States was divided by segregation and brimming with hatred and prejudice. Enter the Pensacola Jaycees All-Stars, the first African-American little league team in Florida. White parents didn’t want their kids playing against black kids, and they complained to league leaders. However, the league ruled in favor of the Jaycees: white teams either played them or forfeited. And forfeit is exactly what they did—every team, every game. So, by default, the Jaycees became district champions and headed to Orlando for the state tournament. Once again, they

47

met resistance. Despite approving players and parents, the coach for the opposing Orlando Kiwanis wouldn’t play the Jaycees and quit. Luckily, the assistant coach stepped up and made history. More than 60 years later, they’re reunited in LONG TIME COMING: A 1955 BASEBALL STORY—a compelling documentary highlighting the cultural significance of their matchup. Through gripping interviews, the film also reveals their varying perspectives on the racial turmoil of then and now. This impactful film is a sobering testament to how far we’ve come in America, but how far we still have to go.

• Dance Evert

Dance Evert has shared in the pioneering efforts in the creation and delivery of Arts-Integrated Lesson design in the schools, which teach both academic and artistic content standards. This 2020-21 school year, teaching artist, Tom Evert, has been credentialed as a National Master Teaching Artist from Young Audiences New York and serves on the roster of artists for the Oho Arts Council and the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning.

Presenter: Tom Evert of Dance Evert Phone 301-529-7684 [email protected] The following are 4 arts-integrated lessons in Science and Math for grades Pre-K through 4:

Pre-K and Kindergarten “Outta Space” - The Science content is integrated with the early education standards of Earth/ Space and Physical science. The residency focuses on the element of space and making applications to meaning in many subjects such as science, math (measurement and shape), language arts (word opposites) and expressiveness in the arts. In addition to our movement activities we will also participate in making an art project to create a costume piece and a hand-held prop to support our theme and include in our culminating event, which will be a video piece that we can share with families and the school community. Academic connections are examined through the art of movement and demonstrate physical development and self- awareness.

The program provides a simple, but great sounding frame DRUM made with packing tape that students will play in class as a study of sound energy.

Grade 1 and 2 “Forces in Motion” - Physical Science Fun, deep learning, and creative movement activities integrate very well with the learning objectives of the physical science standards. Objects and dancers can move in variety of ways, such as straight, zigzag, circular and back and forth. The motion of an object is affected by the force of pushing and pulling. Experimentation and investigation of different ways to change the motion of objects (our bodies) provide creative opportunities for students and provide lively and engaging activities. Grade two scaffolds up to changes in force applied and the forces of gravity and magnets. We examine and interpret the world around us and participate in the art of dance through which we develop discipline, focus and cooperation.

OBSERVATIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT This theme focuses on helping students develop the skills for systematic discovery to understand the science of the natural world around them in greater depth by using scientific inquiry.

CONDENSED CONTENT STATEMENTS 1.ESS.1: The sun is the principal source of energy. 1.ESS.2: Water on Earth is present in many forms. 1.PS.1: Properties of objects and materials can change. 1.PS.2: Objects can be moved in a variety of ways, such as straight, zigzag, circular and back and forth. 1.LS.1 Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical environment.

Grade 3 “Dancing with Worms” engages student learning through multiple intelligences. Teaching the arts and science together informs and advances student understanding, appeal, and the value of the subjects. The creative process is fun, engages learning and builds self-esteem.

“Dancing with Worms” focuses on: • Properties of solids, liquids, and gases. • The presence of and role that air, water, and organic matter play in soil. 53

• Interaction of living and non-living things in soil represented by worms aiding in composting of organic matter. • Forms of Energy – Solar, Wind, Electric, Magnetic The activities are assembled to create a final video of our artwork to share with the community.

Dance and Direct Instruction: The interactions of living and non-living things in soil are explored through dance. The role worms play in the formation of soil and organic matter, the properties of matter are taught in the context of the movement of air and water in soil and the different movements of particles in a solid, liquid, and gas. These individual dances culminate to make a Dancing with Worms video we can share with the school community.

Grade 4 “Geometry and Dance” - Mr. Tom, “The Danceman”, leads lessons that integrate the study of Geometry (math) with creative movement: the art of dance. The human body relates to geometry in that our bones create lines and our joints create angles. With the discipline of full-body movement activities from sitting on the floor to standing as students find creative expression for the academic standards of lines, angles. A greater understanding of 2- dimentional shapes is realized through “stretchy bands” with which students create triangles and quadrilaterals. The connections are so strong between the body moving through space and how we measure it in geometry and creates clear learning opportunities and test scores soar. Our residency culminates with the creation of a video to share with the community.

Ohio Dance Standard Statement Students will demonstrate locomotor and non – locomotor skills with control, coordination and balance during active play. Other Dance Standards include: creating, producing/performing and responding. The work develops the Essential 5 Domains of School Readiness: • Social and Emotional Development • Physical Well-being and Motor Development • Approaches Toward Learning • Language and Literacy Development • Cognition and General Knowledge

Additional Information: Programming instruction thoroughly covers for grade-level content standards. Sessions typically range from 45 minutes to one hour. Grades served: 3rd-5th Grade Number of Students: 25 per session Contact: Tom Evert [email protected] 301-529-7684

• Dancing Classrooms NE Ohio

Program Title(s): • Virtual Learning Model: BREAK Dance @ Home 54

• Hybrid Learning Model: BREAK Dance

Cost: FREE to all schools throughout the 2020-2021 school year

Sign-Up: CLICK HERE to reserve your BREAK Dance access TODAY!

Program Description(s):

BREAK Dance is a new virtual "brain break" curriculum for students because… Breaks Reset Engagement, Attention and Knowledge

The development of this curriculum is in response to teacher and principal requests for short “brain breaks” that allow scholars to stand and physically move their bodies in an organized manner (100% of survey respondents asked for them due to pandemic-related guidelines). Whether due to challenges with the material presented, lack of focus, needing to strengthen connection, or a combination of all the above; BREAK Dance will utilize the power of movement to support teachers and students through this new era of learning.

BREAK Dance @ Home (Remote Learning Model): The at-home model will continue to fulfill educators’ need for “brain breaks” but this adaptation serves the logistical reality that teachers will be (virtually) connected with their students for a shorter length of time than when in their traditional classroom setting. These constraints raise the stakes even higher and we must ensure students are motivated to not only show up (login) but also that they remain engaged throughout that time.

BREAK Dance (Hybrid or In-Person Learning Model): Each nine-week BREAK Dance unit utilizes a sequential approach in presenting 6 pre-recorded lessons for the week that range in length from 3-9 minutes. Each unit centers around a “theme” such as “Dancing in Line” (line dances). Each themed unit will have a corresponding Social Emotional Learning (SEL) focus.

Logistics/Time: • BREAK Dance @ Home: o Brain breaks (BREAKS) are 3 minutes or less o 10 BREAKS uploaded to your Google Classroom for use as needed o Non sequential approach to provide flexibility in how you implement

• BREAK Dance: o Lessons range in length from 3-9 minutes o Six pre-recorded lessons, with a sequential approach, will be uploaded to your Google Classroom each week o Curriculum Integration component available – all assignments connected to the State’s Standards and Common Core instruction o Additional “Bonus” lessons (1-3 minutes) provided each week that represent “completed” dances

Grades: Targeted at 5th grade – content appropriate to distribute throughout 4th -8th at your discretion Contact: Dancing Classrooms Northeast Ohio (DCNEO) Jo Jo Carcioppolo, Executive Director 440-230-5170 [email protected]

“Act It Out” Explore how theater and drama techniques can be used to add active child participation can be added to any story, whether seen, read, told, via these 20-30 minute Zoom sessions for Pre-K to 2nd grade students or as PD for Teachers. Choose from “Act It Out: Yoga Tales” or “Act It Out: Tanzanian Tale” for students and/or teachers provided by Kulture Kids. This program is best for up to 30 people, smaller groups for the younger children. Additional sessions may be scheduled to accommodate more students. Our focus is Language Arts, History/Social Studies.

Choose from the following:

“Act It Out Yoga Tales” — There is a belief that hundreds and hundreds of years ago, in India, all creatures lived in harmony with nature. People saw this and began imitating all things natural. They did the poses and movements of frogs, snakes, birds, butterflies, mountains, trees, cats, cows, fish, flowers and more. As they did these movements, they found their bodies grew stronger and more flexible. This is Yoga, a way to use our minds, breath, and bodies all at the same time. In this session, learn from and act out 2 tales using imagination and yoga!

“Act It Out Tanzanian Tale” — Travel on a safari to “become,” or act as, different animals and learn how to count in Swahili, a language of Tanzania, Africa.

Kulture Kids also offers a special 3-part “Act It Out” PD program for Pre-K to 2nd grade Teachers presented in partnership with Playhouse Square for the PNC Grow Up Great Program called “Act It Out with Jazz Fly 2 - The Jungle Pachanga” inspired by the book, Jazz Fly 2: The Jungle Pachanga written by Matthew Gollub and illustrated by Karen Hanke. = = = = = • The Kennedy Center VISUAL ART: THE SMALL WORKS PROJECT with Mo Willems Celebrating 50 stories of small works by people like you (and maybe even YOU) with 50 small works by Mo.

The problems of the world are so large, they can overwhelm. But you can effect change by helping in small ways. Did you feed your neighbor’s cat while they were in the hospital? Or visit an elderly person from outside their window? Did you bring water to protestors marching in your city? Every positive action you take, no matter how small, is important. We want to hear YOUR Small Work Stories to show the world how small works add up.

For the next 50 weekdays, we’ll spotlight one Small Work Story and pair it with an original small artwork by Mo Willems. As a way of thanking each spotlighted storyteller’s small act, we will mail them Mo’s paired small work of art to keep!

= = = = = • Eyeball It!®

VISUAL ART: Eyeball It!® is a totally free, real studio ART program for 7-13 year-olds available online, and guidable DIY by any adult with children. All you need is Internet access (public or private), some art materials and a place to work.

Eyeball It!® adds an essential ‘A’ (Art) to help transform ‘STEM’ education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) into comprehensive ‘STEAM’ education. High-quality studio art projects foster the creative thinking and problem-solving essential for innovation!

Projects can be printed or downloaded. Videos and Read-Alongs must be viewed from the website by computer or cellphone browser. With each of the Eyeball It!® Projects and Drawing Exercises, there is a Read-Along recording. These play as little movies with the PDF text appearing as it does in the Projects.

Our purpose is to help children read comfortably and with good comprehension, and to make these Projects easier for parents, other adults and kids to manage. From the variety of projects offered on the website, is “Relief Collage & Drawing Exercise” to guide children through constructing a Relief Collage from cut, bent and folded paper shapes. Subject matter is abstract – imaginary forms and objects. The collage can be painted and colored. Intellectual issues include 3-Dimensionality and 3-D construction – the visual/imagination ‘muscle-tone’ needed to turn flat paper into 3-D forms.

Simply sign up for a free account to gain access to every feature of the site. For more information go to: http://eyeballitart4kids.org/

69

Eyeball It!® is a product of my belief that children's intelligence grows in the act of doing — seeing, thinking and making art, all at the same time. The kind of visual and “physical” intelligence I'm trying to provoke in my students will have, I hope, a significant effect on (1) their ability to understand abstract and spatial concepts in math and science and (2) their ability to solve problems — both abstract and practical — creatively. Ideally, I want them to develop a flexible, confident visual intelligence — a joyful intelligence, as I see it — that revels in new challenges and experiences. - Ellen Priest

WHAT YOU NEED An adult to help Different lengths of PVC pipes Two boards String A mallet or small hammer

WHAT YOU DO • Create a xylophone by cutting PVC pipe into various lengths. • Place them side by side on a frame from the longest to shortest. • Cut two boards the appropriate length to accomadate all the pipes. These boards will make a good supporting frame. The best sound will be achieved by allowing a little less than a third of each pipe to extend off the frame. • When you have the pipes the way that you want, tie them on the frame with string. • You can tune your xylophone by cutting the pipes shorter for higher notes and leaving the pipes longer for the lower ones. • Play the xylophone by striking the pipes with a mallet of some kind.
