Tudor/Gothic architecture designed by the architect, Frank Meade. From Arms 1939 to 1960 it served as a hotel with a supper club, booking jazz musicians of the day. The doors opened again when it was converted to a dormitory Hotel for Western Reserve University and Case Institute of Technology. The most recent renovations in 2011 have restored the building to use as a beautiful hotel, preserving and maintaining the integrity of its grand spaces and its meticulous, at times whimsical, architectural detail. Standing before the massive hearth in the Tudor Room will transport you to a time and place that only exists in books and old movies. The splendor of the Crystal Ballroom has been brought back to life and enhanced with murals painted by local artist, Nicolette Capuano. Prepare yourself for an evening of classic old-world charm as we celebrate the Shaker Schools in the beautiful Tudor Arms Hotel. 5 P P Scholars Abby & Tom Abelson Carol & Gil Lowenthal Jean & Andy Albrecht Brian Luntz Marnee & Brendan Anderson Mary Neagoy & Ed Markey Catherine Scallen & Bob Brown Sally & Don Messinger Dorothy Bruggeman Marina & Eduardo Mireles Ellen & John Cannon Judge K.J. • Tony Adamle: Doctor of Defense
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 24, No. 3 (2002) Tony Adamle: Doctor of Defense By Bob Carroll Paul Brown “always wanted his players to better themselves, and he wanted us known for being more than just football players,” Tony Adamle told an Akron Beacon Journal reporter in 1999. In the case of Adamle, the former Cleveland Browns linebacker who passed away on October 8, 2000, at age 76, his post-football career brought him even more honor than captaining a world championship team. Tony was born May 15, 1924, in Fairmont, West Virginia, to parents who had immigrated from Slovenia. By the time he reached high school, his family had moved to Cleveland where he attended Collinwood High. From there, he moved on to Ohio State University where he first played under Brown who became the OSU coach in 1941. World War II interrupted Adamle’s college days along with those of so many others. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Middle East theatre. By the time he returned, Paul Bixler had succeeded Paul Brown, who had moved on to create Cleveland’s team in the new All-America Football Conference. Adamle lettered for the Buckeyes in 1946 and played well enough that he was selected to the 1947 College All-Star Game. He started at fullback on a team that pulled off a rare 16-0 victory over the NFL’s 1946 champions, the Chicago Bears. Six other members of the starting lineup were destined to make a mark in the AAFC, including the game’s stars, quarterback George Ratterman and running back Buddy Young.

  • Integration Without Assimilation: Black Social Life in a Diverse Suburb
Integration without Assimilation: Black Social Life in a Diverse Suburb A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Sociology of the College of Arts and Sciences by Alan V. Grigsby July 19, 2018 MA, Ohio University August 2012 Committee Chair: Jeffrey M. Timberlake, PhD ABSTRACT The face of cities and suburbs has changed. The majority of Americans now live in suburbs and today’s suburbs are becoming more racially diverse than ever before. However, most research on this topic is limited to quantitative research designs that cannot fully ascertain the quality of race relations in this changing landscape. My research uses an ethnographic approach to investigate social life in one racially diverse suburb of Cleveland, OH: Shaker Heights. Specifically, I investigate how African Americans who occupy this space—as residents, employees, and visitors—think about, describe, and participate in social life in a diverse suburb. After two years of ethnographic fieldwork, I conclude that, although Shaker Heights is statistically integrated, the residential spaces and social lives of black adults do not reflect this demographic reality. Moreover, black adults interpret the rare, discrete instances where racial diversity is promoted as inauthentic. Finally, my research explores connections and commonalities among the black adults living in the segregated sections of Shaker Heights. This information will help scholars better understand dynamics of race relations in a neighborhood context that is both seldom explored and growing in demographic importance. ii Copyright 2018, by Alan V.

Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland (Gateway) was formed in 1990 by the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, for the purposes of financing, building, owning and operating the Gateway Sports Complex in downtown Cleveland. Gateway owns Quicken Loans Arena, as well as Progressive Field and surrounding common areas, including Gateway Plaza along Ontario Avenue. Gateway’s lease agreements with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as revised and extended in 2004 and 2007, facilitate Gateway’s ability to continue as a good steward of these two tremendous buildings, as it has been for a generation. The leases with the Indians and the Cavaliers require the teams to pay for operating and maintenance costs of their respective facilities, many of the capital repair costs, as well as all of the cost of operating the Gateway Corporation. Gateway’s responsibilities – pursuant to a budget agreed upon annually with the teams and financed by team rental payments - include common area maintenance, insurance, security, and oversight of the maintenance and capital repairs of the ballpark and the arena, ensuring that Gateway’s facilities are maintained to guarantee their long-term viability.
