Integration Without Assimilation: Black Social Life in a Diverse Suburb
Integration without Assimilation: Black Social Life in a Diverse Suburb A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Sociology of the College of Arts and Sciences by Alan V. Grigsby July 19, 2018 MA, Ohio University August 2012 Committee Chair: Jeffrey M. Timberlake, PhD ABSTRACT The face of cities and suburbs has changed. The majority of Americans now live in suburbs and today’s suburbs are becoming more racially diverse than ever before. However, most research on this topic is limited to quantitative research designs that cannot fully ascertain the quality of race relations in this changing landscape. My research uses an ethnographic approach to investigate social life in one racially diverse suburb of Cleveland, OH: Shaker Heights. Specifically, I investigate how African Americans who occupy this space—as residents, employees, and visitors—think about, describe, and participate in social life in a diverse suburb. After two years of ethnographic fieldwork, I conclude that, although Shaker Heights is statistically integrated, the residential spaces and social lives of black adults do not reflect this demographic reality. Moreover, black adults interpret the rare, discrete instances where racial diversity is promoted as inauthentic. Finally, my research explores connections and commonalities among the black adults living in the segregated sections of Shaker Heights. This information will help scholars better understand dynamics of race relations in a neighborhood context that is both seldom explored and growing in demographic importance. ii Copyright 2018, by Alan V. -

DEPECHE MODE TO BRING THEIR ‘GLOBAL SPIRIT TOUR’ TO LATIN AMERICA IN MARCH 2018 – Following European and North American Tour, Depeche Mode to Play Stadiums in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil – BEVERLY HILLS, CA (Mar. 22, 2017) – For the first time in nine years, Depeche Mode will tour Latin America, bringing their stunning live show to fans who have not seen the band since 2009’s Tour of the Universe. “We’re incredibly excited to return to Latin America”, says lead singer Dave Gahan. “We weren’t able to see our fans there on the last tour, so we knew we had to visit this time.” Following this summer’s massive European summer stadium tour and the upcoming fall tour of North America, the band will continue to extend the Global Spirit Tour with two weeks of stadium shows across Latin America in March 2018. The tour will begin on March 11th in Mexico City, continue through Bogota, Lima, Santiago and Buenos Aires, before wrapping up in Sao Paulo on March 27th. The Latin American tour is being promoted by Live Nation, continuing their global partnership with Depeche Mode. Details on all ticket on-sale dates will follow. The Global Spirit Tour supports the band’s 14th studio album, Spirit, released March 17th via Columbia Records. The album’s powerful and timely first single, “Where’s The Revolution”, has been well-received by critics and fans alike, lauded as a strong “return to form” for Depeche Mode. Spirit has already garnered critical acclaim, with MOJO calling it “blow by blow…Depeche Mode’s best album in years.” Spirit -

Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland (Gateway) was formed in 1990 by the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, for the purposes of financing, building, owning and operating the Gateway Sports Complex in downtown Cleveland. Gateway owns Quicken Loans Arena, as well as Progressive Field and surrounding common areas, including Gateway Plaza along Ontario Avenue. Gateway’s lease agreements with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as revised and extended in 2004 and 2007, facilitate Gateway’s ability to continue as a good steward of these two tremendous buildings, as it has been for a generation. The leases with the Indians and the Cavaliers require the teams to pay for operating and maintenance costs of their respective facilities, many of the capital repair costs, as well as all of the cost of operating the Gateway Corporation. Gateway’s responsibilities – pursuant to a budget agreed upon annually with the teams and financed by team rental payments - include common area maintenance, insurance, security, and oversight of the maintenance and capital repairs of the ballpark and the arena, ensuring that Gateway’s facilities are maintained to guarantee their long-term viability. -
