  • AIB Newsletter Regularly Informs Our Membership of Recent Developments in the Academy
Academy of International Business NewsletterVol. 24, No. 4, 2018 Letter from the President The AIB Newsletter regularly informs our membership of recent developments in the Academy. As the President, I would like to draw your attention to several articles of particular interest in this edition. In our AIB Mission, Vision, and Values statement, one key value is integrity. We believe in prac- ticing the highest ethical principles in our research, education, and professional lives. In reality, Chuck C . Y . Kwok however, AIB program chairs and journal editors are confronted with cases of unethical conduct. To provide clear policies and procedures to address these cases, the AIB board established two standing committees: the Ethics Policy Committee (EPC) and Ethics Review Committee (ERC). The former is respon- sible for the interpretation, implementation, and dissemination of the AIB Code of Ethics while the latter is responsible for the investigation of ethics violations. While the full AIB Code of Ethics is available on the association’s website, Denis Arnold, the EPC Chair, has contributed an article to this issue which provides a detailed examination of its development process. We IB scholars are sometimes criticized for being “too academic,” producing research that’s disconnected from events in the “real world.” The Academy of International Business is making efforts to bridge this gap. In our annual AIB confer- ences, we invite practitioners to share their thoughts and have dialogues with our members at special panels. We also en- courage our members to participate in practitioner-organized conferences to explain the practical relevance of our academ- ic research.

  • Hydropower Potential and Development Opportunities
Suspended sediment concentrations and turbine wear during the drawdown of two Alpine reservoirs J.N. Fernandes R. M. Boes M. Titzschkau Postdoctoral Researcher Professor Mechanical engineer VAW/ ETH Zurich VAW/ ETH Zurich KWO Zurich, Switzerland Zurich, Switzerland Innertkirchen, Switzerland A. Hammer S. Haun M. Schletterer Mechanical engineer Postdoctoral Researcher Biologist TIWAG University of Stuttgart TIWAG Innsbruck, Austria Stuttgart, Germany Innsbruck, Austria 1. Introduction Reservoir sedimentation is nowadays one of the main concerns in the operational management of dams. Despite its long-term process, it had an increasing significance in the last decades. The decrease of the reservoir capacity due to sedimentation has impacts on the reservoir’s main purpose such as hydropower production, flood protection and drinking and irrigation water availability (e.g. Müller 2012). If the sediment deposits reach the intake of a hydropower plant (HPP), the operation efficiency and safety of the hydraulic scheme are threatened. A sustainable management of both the reservoir and the HPP requires an adequate sedimentation monitoring and control. Adaptive strategies such as dam or intake heightening can be used to cope with reservoir sedimentation. However, the most efficient and sustainable solutions must guarantee the balance of sediments between the head- and tailwater of the dam. In this case, sediment routing, sluicing and/or venting techniques may be used. These may consist of opening outlet gates, resulting in considerable water losses, or releasing a water-sediment mixture via the headrace tunnel and the turbines. In the present paper, this last option is explored. Conveying sediment-laden water through the turbines may expose the machinery steel parts to the so-called hydro- abrasive wear or erosion.
